UPDATE: On Wednesday afternoon, A&E, the cable network which airs "Duck Dynasty," suspended Phil Robertson indefinitely from filming, issuing the following statement: "We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series 'Duck Dynasty.' His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

GLAAD issued the following statement in response to A&E's decision, attributed to GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz: "What’s clear is that such hateful anti-gay comments are unacceptable to fans, viewers, and networks alike. By taking quick action and removing Robertson from future filming, A&E has sent a strong message that discrimination is neither a Christian nor an American value."

The stars of "Duck Dynasty" might be America's most popular TV family, but that could change very soon — because Phil Robertson has made some seriously divisive anti-gay remarks that have sparked instant backlash.

Speaking with GQ, Robertson lamented that when "everything is blurred on what's right and what's wrong ... sin becomes fine." So just what qualifies as sinful in his book?

"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there — bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," he declared.

Phil probably should have cut himself off at this point (considering he's a national TV star), but instead he paraphrased Corinthians. "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God," he warned. "Don't deceive yourself. It's not right."

What's more, according to him, it's basically incomprehensible. "It seems to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man's anus," he explained. "That's just me. I'm just thinking, 'There's more there! She's got more to offer.' I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical."

Within minutes of GQ revealing Robertson's quotes (which will appear in the January issue), GLAAD issued a fiery response — and the gay-rights organization is none too pleased.

"Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil's lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe," said GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz. "He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans — and Americans — who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. Phil's decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families."

Cruz, who cited an August Public Policy Polling survey showing 56 percent of Louisiana residents supported same-sex marriage, stopped short of calling for an all-out boycott of "Duck Dynasty."

Despite Phil's strong words, however, he insists he's a Christian who doesn't condemn others — even if they are "sinners" in his mind.

"We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That's the Almighty's job," he told the magazine. "We just love 'em, give 'em the good news about Jesus — whether they're homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort 'em out later, you see what I'm saying?"

Still, Robertson insisted that his family "really believes strongly that if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off. We ought to just be repentant, turn to God, and… everything will turn around."

And it seems that the tide is already turning, considering the fact that once GLAAD issued its statement, Phil was quick to clarify — and soften— his previous remarks.

"I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior," the TV star said in a statement released by A&E Wednesday. "My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."

And there you have it — at least for now. While Phil is standing by his opinions, he might be feeling a bit repentant about the way he originally stated them.

This is not a First Amendment issue [sneakypete #13]. Robertson can and did say what he felt like saying. He did not do so as an employee of his employer [sneakypete #11]. I believe A&E neither set up the interview, nor did they have any representative present. Robertson's employer can suspend or cancel him unless (unlikely) a contract provision does not allow it without some due process (as seen with government jobs). The public statements of Robertson, even if made in his private capacity, clearly may affect the business interests of A&E.

The bible is clear and explicit in condemning homosexual sex.

New American Standard

[Leviticus 18:22] "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

[Leviticus 20:13] "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them."

[Leviticus 20:15] "If there is a man who lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death; you shall also kill the animal."

[Leviticus 20:16] "If there is a woman who approaches any animal to mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them."

In re homosexuality, Robertson did not do much more than profess his belief in the bible and paraphrased what it says.

As for Robertson addressing homosexuality and bestiality, the bible separates them only by one verse addressing a man marrying a woman and her mother.

This GLAAD nonsense about Christian doctrine is clearly in conflict with the explicit Christian doctrine expressed in the bible. If Robertson is guilty of "public disdain for LGBT people," so is the word of God as expressed in the bible. There do not appear to be any "Robertson lies about an entire community," or about anyone or anything. Stating a good faith belief is something, even if someone else finds it obnoxious, is not a lie.

The GLAAD/LGBT position is really that the bible is a convenient work of fiction and the inspired work of men in their own interest. GLAAD's real complaint is against the bible being portrayed as the inspired word of God, and Robertson repeating what the bible says and expressing his belief in the bible.

As for GLAAD spokesman claiming support of the majority of Louisianans and Americans, that is support to live their lives free from discrimination. Robertson did not discriminate against them or anyone. He exercised his right to express Christian doctrine, as expressed in the bible, and his belief in said doctrine. Stating a belief is not an act of discrimination or defamation.

"On August 14, 2013, the season four premiere drew a total of 11.8 million viewers, an increase of 37% vs. the season three premiere, drawing 6.3 million viewers in the Adults 25–54 demographic, making it the most watched nonfiction series telecast in cable television history."

Editing controversy

In 2012, Phil Robertson said he confronted producers of Duck Dynasty about editors of the show telling them not to say "Jesus" during their prayer at the end of episodes and adding "fake bleeps" when there was no profanity spoken.

Robertson spoke about the fake bleeps, saying, "They inserted fake bleeps, like someone had used profanity, but no one had used profanity". Robertson said the editors "probably thought that there was some profanity going on" even though there was "zero". Robertson responded by saying, "If you want that, oh, you can get all of that you want. Just turn the station. There's plenty of that. If we're not using profanity, why make it look like we're using profanity? What is the point? Why don't you just run it, and say what we say. They're like, 'You got a point.' So they quit doing that."

Robertson then said, "The other thing was when we prayed, we said, 'In Jesus' name, amen' … they would just have me say, 'And thank you, Lord, for the food, thank you for loving us, amen.' Robertson responded by saying, "So I said, 'why would you cut out in Jesus' name?" Robertson's paraphrased response of the editors was they "don't want to offend some of the Muslims, or something." Robertson responded by saying our calendar year is labeled Anno Domini (A.D.), which means "in the year of Our Lord". Robertson then said, "I said, 'You Hollywood cats are counting time by Jesus just like I am.' I would think that out of all of the people that walk planet Earth, if we've all decided in America to count time by just one of them, Jesus of Galilee, I don't think it hurts to throw his name in there from time to time". Robertson then said, "So I noticed now, every once in a while, they're leaving it in there."

This is not A&E's introduction to the issue of Christianity being part of this highly successful, money making television show. When last confronted, they managed to leave Jesus in there once in a while. The 11.8 million viewers are unlikely to have included any large contingent from GLAAD.

GLAAD claims "More than 15,000 members make GLAAD a powerful force for change in the media industry and a leader for LGBT equality."

If all 15,000 of them had tuned in, they would have made 0.13% of the viewing audience of 11.8 million.

If A&E does not want them, someone else will.
