At least three shots were fired around 8:20 a.m. ET Monday in a building on the grounds of the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., the Navy confirms. The Navy also tweeted at 8:51 a.m ET that: "#BREAKING: Still active shooter. More base police entering building. Approx. 3000 people work in bldg. #NavyYardShooting" According to The Washington Post, "D.C. police are looking for a person they say shot at least one person." We'll update as more news comes in. Our colleagues at WAMU are following the story here. Update at 9:01 a.m. ET. About The Building Where The Shooting Has Occurred. The Navy just posted this news release: WASHINGTON (NNS) — An active shooter was reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building (Bldg. 197) on the Washington Navy Yard at 8:20 a.m. (Eastern Time). Poster Comment: Personnel at the base have been ordered to "shelter in place", the Navy said. There is one confirmed injury. Emergency personnel are on scene and a "shelter in place" order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel.
The Naval Sea Systems Command's headquarters is the work place for about 3,000 people.

Four people were killed and six others were shot - two of the victims police officers - at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard Monday morning in an attack by more than one gunman. At about 10:20 a.m., one shooter had been reported contained. Would that qualify as a mutiny?
Last report is 12 fatalities and shooter dead. I watched coverage earlier. Also potential of 2 other suspects at large - not sure I give that report credence. I'll guess the shooter was a disgruntled employee who may have received a RIF notice or something along those lines. One of my tavern buddies received an expected RIF notice last week and he's not too happy about it. I don't expect him to go postal. Shooter was a black man which doesn't fit the normal profile.
Seems they have a name now. Aaron Alexis.

The shooter, who was killed by police during a gun battle some two hours after the initial shootings, was a government civilian contractor new to the Washington, D.C., area, said a law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation. At least 12 people, including a shooter, have been confirmed dead in the rampage at the Washington Navy Yard, District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray said Monday. Officials continue to search for two “potential” additional suspects in the case, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said, although other officials say the evidence indicates only one gunman was involved. Good speculation, hondolt.
NBC first identified the slain gunman as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old man from Texas. He was a civilian contractor who reportedly stole a military ID to gain access to the Navy Yard. A senior federal law enforcement official said authorities were investigating whether the main shooter was motivated by a dispute with employees at the Navy Yard. This is a bit confusing. It isn't easy to steal a military ID unless you do so violently. Was he a civilian contractor who worked at the Navy Yard? That would be my guess, except for the military ID card alleged theft.
Yeah thought that too. If he was a contractor anywhere in DC he would have a contractor CAC ID and could go on the installation. If he "stole" one then the gate guard is negligent for not matching the picture to the shooter.

Maybe not. It is Monday, and potentially on Friday at a local gym frequented by both he lifted the card. The owner of the ID card was thought to be the suspect and is now clear. He was not even at the site today and was in his south western VA home. Probably late for work looking for his ID card:) Don't know but that is another story to be investigated. He could have been on leave or if a civilian could be on furlough from the sequester.

I'll guess when they say he was a civilian contractor that would mean a defense contractor. He obviously had some sort of issue with someone(s) in Bldg 197 of the Navy Yard. The building likely had some sort of separate access (layers of security) and that may be where the stolen ID card had to be put into play. I guess I'll wait for the 7 O'clock news to see how tightly the facts are by then. /speculation

Yes I opined on the additional requirement for a building access badge on LP. I work in such a building on a military post.

Thanks for that link. His e-mail address indicates he was likely a defense contractor. I'm waiting to learn his motive to kill 12 people. Last shooting and murder at a local military installation involved a (GI/NCO) husband killing a GS employee who was boffing his wife while he was deployed in one of those overseas wars.
