Mexican Invasion Title: Mainstream Media Mythology on Obama's "Record" Deportations Over the last several months, the mainstream media have published numerous articles about how the Obama Administration is deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, the data shows that the truth is quite different than the media is portraying it. The Department of Homeland Security breaks down immigration enforcement into two categories -- removals and returns. A removal is the confirmed movement of an inadmissible or deportable alien out of the United States based on an order of removal. An alien who is removed has administrative or criminal consequences placed on subsequent reentry owing to the fact of the removal. A return is the confirmed movement of an inadmissible or deportable alien out of the United States not based on an order of removal. Most returns are of Mexican nationals who have been apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol and returned to Mexico. Here is the actual immigration enforcement data for the last 60 years, provided by the Department of Homeland Security: It is true that the Obama Administration is on track to achieve a record number of removals from the country. However, under most Presidents, removals represent a small percentage of immigration enforcement. Returns are the measure that reflects the state of security at the border and routine immigration enforcement within the country. On this measure, the Obama Administration has the worst record of any administration since Kennedy / Johnson. So, while the Obama Administration is doing a great job pursuing criminal deportations, their enforcement of border security is very lax compared to the last seven Presidents. Now, if the Obama Administration believes that only criminals who violate some law (other than our immigration laws) should be deported, they should just say so. Then let's have an honest debate about letting more Mexicans into the country legally. But let's stop this charade about how the Obama Administration is enforcing all of our immigration laws in record numbers. They are not. They have one of the worst records on immigration enforcement of any Administration in history. Only the Kennedy / Johnson Administration was worse.
