ccording to WPBF in Boynton Beach, Florida, 22-year-old Jared Alexander said he was wearing a hoodie at a Boynton Beach mall when a security officer asked him to take the hoodie off. When he refused, other security officers showed up. Alexander said, “Why are you guys harassing me? I’m not stealing. I’m not going to take my hoodie off.” After a few minutes, he says, he had to go to work and so he left. He was met outside by police. Alexander says they handcuffed him and questioned him. Alexander said he was trying to shield himself from the rain. Boynton Beach Mall has a posted code of conduct at all entrances, reading, “Mall may restrict hoodies, hats and dark glasses concealing facial identification of patrons and visitors at the mall’s discretion.” Alexander says he bought his yellow hoodie at the mall. Alexander was given a trespassing citation and barred from the mall for a year. Boynton Beach Mall maintains that its code of conduct has been in place for years, but Alexander claims he was targeted.

Of course he claimed that. My local bank where I pay my mortgage jumped on me about 2 years ago for wearing a hoodie and a baseball cap in the bank when I went in there to make a house payment. When the teller told me to take my hat off (the hood was down on the hoodie) when I went up to the counter to give her the check,I told her to kiss my big red ass because I wasn't taking my freaking hat off for her or anyone else. Not that I really cared about the hat,but I do care about the stupidity involved of telling a customer you identify because he has been walking up to the counter for years to make his house payment take his hat off so the security cameras could better film him,when all the tellers in the damn place already know who I am,and most know where I live. The bank manager that came out to handle the disturbance even knows me and knows where I live. It's a rural county that only had two banks for years,and I have been living here for over 30 years. Hell,one of the senior loan officers is married to one of my friends and lives just up the road from me. The people that started that bank knew my father from when they were all young people. The asshat manager the teller called out at first refused to even accept my check for my house payment unless I took my baseball hat off. He quickly backed up when I demanded that he give me a letter in writing with his signature stated he was refusing to accept my house payment,though. He then told me I could make the payment from outside at the drive up teller. Good move on his part because I was planning on leaving the bank with it and going directly to a lawyer and never again having to make a house payment. I told him to kiss my ass because I was already in his freaking (probably not the exact words used) bank TRYING to make my payment and he was illegally refusing to accept it. I also informed him that since I had been a customer there for decades I did NOT appreciate being accused of being a potential bank robber or any other type of criminal merely because I was wearing a hat and jacket,especially not a potential bank robber so freaking stupid that he uses a check to pay his house payment as he is trying to rob the bank. There is also a very good possibility that I might have mentioned something about how stupid he was. The end result was I was pissed the rest of the day and had to be careful to make sure I didn't smack somebody that might piss me off accidentally,and he DID end up accepting the check and giving me a receipt. And I guess a few of the locals that were in there doing their banking business were entertained. A few were smiling and giving me the thumbs up. The ironic part is I DID have a 44 special in my pocket the whole time. Look,we ALL know the whole "hoodie in a bank" thing is about black bank robbers. Since I'm not black,didn't even have the damn hoodie raised,AND almost everybody in the bank recognized me on sight as I came in the door,just how freaking stupid IS such a policy? Especially since I can absolutely guarantee you that if a black man wearing a hoodie came in there they would be afraid to say a word to him about removing it because they know they would get their asses sued off them and be fired. What I do know for a fact is that the next month I went right back inside wearing my hat and hoodie,walked right up to the teller,and gave her my check and left with the receipt with no problems. Haven't had any problems since then,and haven't seen their "no hat and no hoodie" sign since then,either.

This reminded me of an old segment from the Candid Camera TV show where they film a man getting on an elevator with some actors who are all holding hats. As the elevator goes up the actors all put their hats on to see if the man would put his on all well. They were quite successful getting people to 'follow along' with whatever the group was doing.
