Black community: Please wake the fuck up. When I was young my mother used to tell me a story about my uncles. My mom’s older brother used to help with his younger brother’s homework. At first, my younger uncle did very well, but as the weeks progressed he seemed to be finishing his homework way too fast. My older uncle got suspicious and asked him one day, “Are you doing all your work or are you cheating?” My younger uncle said “Of course I’m doing all the work.” The older brother took his younger brother aside and said, “If you want to lie to get ahead in life, that’s your choice. If you want to lie to your mother and father, that’s fine. If you want to lie to me, who you are closest to, that’s even fine. But never ever lie to yourself.” The moral of the story? Whatever you do, never lie to yourself, because the only person you will be deluding and hurting is you. This brings me to the topic facing the black community. There is not a shred of evidence that Geroge Zimmerman was a racist. He was a wannabe cop, a vigilante maybe, but not a racist. In fact, evidence showed he was anything but a racist. He mentored young, black kids, complained to police when a white kid beat a black homeless man, and the only person to even use a racist term in this entire ordeal was Trayvon Martin, not Zimmerman. Whatever you do, don’t lie to yourself. Fool everybody else in the world if you want, but don’t lie to yourself. And that’s what a lot of the black community is doing. You are lying to yourselves when you make this case about civil rights and social justice when young, black men are being gun down by other young, black men in alarming numbers. 18-35 year old black men make up 4 percent of this great country yet commit over 50 percent of all murders in this country. You might convict Zimmerman in civil court — and that’s fine — but it will be nothing but a shallow victory when next year, in 2014, another 500 young black men are murdered by other black men in Chicago alone. Don’t lie to yourselves. Young black men are targets in this country — by cops? Probably. By the justice system looking to convict? More than like likely. By other black men? Most definitely. When I ask you not to lie to yourself, I’m giving you the same advice my uncle gave his brother. The only person that will be hurt by that lie is you. Sure, you’ll get the Jesse Jackson protest or Reverend Al Sharpton to show up, but young, black men will still die — and in big numbers. You will continue having to bury your kids, and for what? Black mothers are worried about their sons in this country. They should be. But it’s not white people like George they should be afraid of; it’s other black men. You know why? Because there is a 90 percent chance that if your son is ever murdered, it will be by another black man or teen. The first step of not lying to yourself? Being truthful to yourself. Fight against the injustices towards your communities by people within your own communities who are hurting you, who are killing your boys, your sons. The murder of these young men has to stop, but for that to happen we have to start being honest with ourselves. Honesty comes with self-criticism. There is a virus in the black community. That virus is black boys dying by the hundreds at the hands of other blacks.
