As you might expect, the gun guys are furious at any mention of their being held responsible for the firearms that they own. "If you buy a gun in Albany, Mayor Jerry Jennings wants the police chief to know within 24 hours. A gun-control law he proposed Wednesday drew immediate fire from critics who said the legislation would only affect law-abiding gun owners without reducing crime. It quickly became a hot topic on a live Web cast on the National Rifle Association?s Web site. ?I can walk into a show and buy as many guns as I like,? Jennings said. ?It?s really a built-in accountability system. We can work more effectively to reduce gun violence in the city.? Before putting the bill together, Jennings said, his administration examined similar laws in New York City, Chicago and other cities. Under the law, everyone who sells weapons would need a dealer license approved by the police chief. All handguns would require safety devices to make them childproof. Pellet guns would need to have orange plugs, making them easily distinguishable from handguns. Sale of common kinds of ammunition would be prohibited." This is hardly groundbreaking legislation? as the article says, there are similar laws in many other cities around the country. And what all of this is about is something that should be very important to gun owners in Albany and elsewhere: responsibility. That?s what this law does? it gives the sheriff the information he needs to stay aware about where the guns in his city are. "Alderman James Scalzo, who introduced the law, said it is needed to help track gun crime. ?The intent of the legislation is to give the police chief knowledge of who possesses a handgun in the city of Albany,? he said. ?Honest, law-abiding people should be able to have handguns but they should be registered with the chief of police."? The gun guys don?t like that, because they aren?t interested in being held responsible for the choices they make. They choose to endanger us and our commities by owning firearms? the absolute least they could do is fess up to the danger they?re putting us in. "Albany resident Kevin Jones said the law, if passed, would prove unconstitutional. ?Other than an outright prohibition, this is the strictest legislation I?ve ever seen,? he said. Michael Hay of Albany said guns are needed to protect his family. ?I can?t, for the life of me, see why anyone would give a free pass to people?s houses,? he said. ?The criminal element has no idea whether there is a firearm behind that door. How does the sheriff keeping a record of where the firearms are give criminals ?a free pass? to break into anyone?s home? That?s complete nonsense. Now, the Alderman quoted at the end of the story does have a valid point? this law won?t do much to stop crime. To really stop crime, you?ll need laws that keep firearms out of the hands of criminal in the first place? laws like one-gun-a-month and laws that require background checks on all gun sales. But this law is effective after crime has happened? if a crime goes down with a legally owned firearm, cops will have the ability to track down the gun?s owners and get information quickly. Gun owners shouldn?t be able to stand in the way of that simply because they don?t want their local law enforcement to be aware they?re endangering the community.] This article is particularly interesting because it shows the general Constitution hatred of the gun grabbers that extends beyond the Second Amendment. We shouldn't see the Constitution as written in stone, or handed down to us by the hands of God Himself. It's a document created by men two hundred years ago. And those same men gave us the tools and the know-how to change it when it became clear that the law no longer applied. And no matter what reading of the Second Amendment you subscribe to, it is clearly one law that no longer should apply to our changing world. "After a federal appeals court ruled recently that the Second Amendment protected an individual right to bear arms, Benjamin Wittes wrote an essay for The New Republic in which he suggested: “Let's repeal the damn thing.” Wittes writes: “If, as gun-control supporters have long argued, the amendment embodies only a collective right and the right to keep guns is indelibly linked to membership in Revolution-era militias ”institutions that no longer exist” then the provision is already a dead letter, and repealing it would therefore be a simple matter of constitutional hygiene. If, on the other hand, the amendment really does “confer on individuals the right to bear arms, then it embodies values against which we should be prepared to fight” (though not with guns, presumably)." The fact is that we have too much gun violence in America today. Firearms are making violence possible every day in almost every city. We need to do something about it. If the Second Amendment speaks of a collective right, then it should be clear that our world has outgrown the kinds of institutions that made up the “well-regulated militias” the Amendment speaks of. If it's talking about an individual right, then we really do have a problem with it” no law should condone the kind of violence happening in America today, and widespread firearms ownership is making that violence directly possible. Either way, it's time for the Second Amendment to be seriously reconsidered.
