The Zimmerman trial taken on it's face, is a clear case of self defense. The lawyers and politicians have done all they can to muddy the waters, but by the only reasonable account, George Zimmerman was physically attacked by Trayvon Martin, and shot him to defend himself from imminent harm. The physical evidence, witness testimony, even the phone calls to 911 and the non emergency police line all support that view. If Trayvon Martin had been white, there would have never been a trial. In fact initially there wasn't. It wasn't until Al Sharpton, the New Black Panthers, the Obama justice department and other racial grievance groups began applying political pressure that a trial occurred at all. It was a political witch hunt from the start. And I fear more is at risk here than the life and freedom of one man.
I believe I have a right to defend myself from someone trying to harm me, no matter what color they are. Barak Obama and Eric Holder seem to feel very differently about that. That issue is very much on trial today in Florida. The racial grievance mongers of the left have turned the courts into a circus looking for the mythical white on black violent crime, but they keep coming up short. Tawana Brawley, the fictional Duke Lacrosse rape, and now 'white hispanic' George Zimmerman's accusations were all invented from whole cloth to fit into an imaginary reality where blacks suffer violence at the hands of racially bigoted whites.
Violent crime in white America (white on white crime) is slightly less frequent than violent crime than in Finland, while violent crime in black America (black on black crime) is slightly more frequent than violent crime in Nigeria. This is obvious to everyone who wants to look at the numbers without cloaking them in post deconstructionist nonsense. It makes no sense to think that the 'cause' of black America's violent crime is something created and propagated by white Americans. But that's the fantasy that the far left continues to try to sell us. And that's why they need the white on black crime fantasy so badly.
For my part as a white American, I think the circumstance in black America is a tragedy. I would very much prefer to see it change. I think the world could be incredibly enriched if black American would stop killing each other with such remarkable regularity. But recognizing that it's bad is not the same as taking the blame for it. I am not responsible for the high murder rate in inner city Chicago, or Camden, or Detroit. And I'm damned tired of the government doing things to me (and the law abiding tax paying citizens like me) because of it. George Zimmerman's indictment was very much an indictment of me and my values. This is why I've taken it so personally.
But it's not me and the people like me causing the problems of black America. If anything, it's the bigotry of low expectations that continues to be propagated by the left, that has left black American culture to so thoroughly fester on virtually ever social metric. In my opinion the only way to save black America is to begin holding it to a single higher standard again. The same standard that the rest of us are held to.
Trayvon Martin may have been a typical black youth from a single parent home, but measured against a single standard set by all kids his age, he was a relatively violent kid. He picked a fight with the wrong guy and tragically died for it. But white America didn't kill him, black America did.
