(CNN) – Sen. Rand Paul rushed to show support Tuesday for slain Navy sniper Chris Kyle after Paul's father, former Rep. Ron Paul, drew criticism for asserting a political opinion in a Tweet about Kyle's death.

"Chris Kyle was a hero like all Americans who don the uniform to defend our country. Our prayers are with his family during this tragic time," Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, told Breitbart.com.

The younger Paul's statement came after Ron Paul, the libertarian firebrand and three-time presidential candidate, wrote on Twitter that "Chris Kyle's death seems to confirm that 'he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.' Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn't make sense."

The longtime congressman from Texas is known for his staunch opposition to U.S. military involvement overseas, and while he doesn't describe himself as an "isolationist," he has won favor among libertarians for opposing military intervention in other countries.

Kyle, 38, had claimed a record number of sniper killings in Iraq and said in an interview that he had no regrets about the 160 people he shot during his five combat tours in Iraq.

The former SEAL with two silver stars was an outspoken defender of Second Amendment rights and also helped form a foundation that assisted military veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. Kyle was killed along with another veteran, Chad Littlefield. The two had arrived at the shooting range together Saturday with the suspect, Eddie Ray Routh.

In a post to Facebook Monday night, Ron Paul elaborated more on his comment.

"As a veteran, I certainly recognize that this weekend's violence and killing of Chris Kyle were a tragic and sad event. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Kyle's family," the post stated. "Unconstitutional and unnecessary wars have endless unintended consequences. A policy of non-violence, as Christ preached, would have prevented this and similar tragedies. -REP"

CNN's Ashley Killough and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Apparently Rand hasn't inherited his father's following of Paultards either.

I wonder what his first clue was?

BTW,Rand, not everybody that dons a uniform is a hero. 90+ percent of them never hear a shot fired and know they will never hear a shot fired before they take the oath.

I think most people will agree the recruit that joined to go to a Special Operations Force unit carrying a rifle make a little more serious commitment towards being a hero at enlistment than did the guy who joined to be a dental assistant. And yes,for those of you wondering,a E-5 SEAL Team sniper gets paid the same base pay and benefits as a E-5 dental technician or cook.

I wonder if Rand thinks that Muslim that shot people at Ft. Hood is a hero?

Does who get it,the SEAL or the others?

FWIW,I have been out of the military for a long time now,but I suspect it still works the same when it comes to re-enlistment bonuses. The most critical to the needs of the service get the biggest bonuses. Since Special Warfare people generally re-enlist anyhow, they don't need much incentive to be talked into signing over.

On the other hand people who write software take a lot of persuading to get them to sign over for another tour.

Snipers,literally.

Sorry about that I should have been more specific, I meant the SEAL because I figured they would be a critical fill career field..

I know there was a lot of SRBs in the early 80s when we were expanding out under Uncle Ronnie, and pay raises too... My raise was about 15% and I got an SRB of "1", which meant you got one month worth of base pay for every year you re-enlisted up to 6... Never could figure out why they considered my career field to be a critical one but anyway they did, so heck why not take the money and run...

BTW, can't sleep tonight?

Nope, but I think sleeping 14 hours yesterday and 12 hours the day before may have had something to do with that.

Been doing too much (now) unfamiliar hard physical work the last two weeks, and I was exhausted. I had to spread and grade 40 tons of gravel,a truck load of dirt, and move a bunch of crap around because I had a septic tank put in for the bathroom I'm plumbing in my workshop, and I'm putting heat and air-conditioning in there, too. Or more correctly, having people put it in for me. Don't know squat about doing anything in the construction field myself outside of carpentry.

Still,I had to move cars and trucks, parts, tools, and other stuff around to make room for the heat and ac guys to come in and do their work.

Yeah,I have tools like the front end loader that helped me move and grade all the dirt and gravel, but just getting in and out of it is murder on my knees and back. So is anything that requires me to do much bending over.

I'm just guessing, but my best guess is the SEAL career field probably isn't as critical as you may think. It's like SF. Being a SEAL or SF recruiter is one of the easiest jobs in the military because most re-enlist. Where else can you get paid to enjoy adrenaline rushes like that and get paid to play with all those high-tech toys?
