What Students At 'Texas A&M' Are Saying About Danny Glover and His 'First Amendent' BS Speech (my title)

You can read article about his thoughts

We shouldn't have these events and invite these people to our campus. Danny Glover and his ilk are fostering racism.

One of the comments: If Glover was any dumber he'd have to be watered 2 days a week.

I don't understand why we care what actors and performers have to say about history, the law, politics - anything other than about their chosen profession. The fact that A&M paid him, and Harry Belafonte in the past, to come talk about MLK is beyond me. I just don't get it.

Yep, that's quite disappointing. Just because someone is famous and black doesn't make them an authority on MLK or his legacy.

It's sad that everything MLK stood for has been tainted by a bunch of blindly partisan loons.

I called bowen's office and the lady that I spoke to was unaware of the event and did not comment when told that bowen's response to this was "It was a great day in Aggieland to have Glover speak before the MLK group. I respect MLK and have no respect for Glover.

You are telling me that my donations help pay for this communist tribble?

I am incensed

This is nothing new for this group which is funded thru our donations to the Former students association.

Angela Davis spoke before this group in 2011

There is [a] class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs—partly because they want sympathy, and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs... There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don’t want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.” Booker T. Washington’s 1911 book, My Larger Education.

Actually he made a good argument for the 2nd amendment. The blacks didn't own guns or weapons. This allowed the white man to have control over him. If blacks were allowed to own guns and could defend themselves, maybe they wouldn't have been forced to be slaves.

instead of Danny Glover, could've invited Morgan Freeman. He paid for the 1st integrated high school prom in Charleston, Mississippi. They had separate black/white proms up until 2008. So Freeman said he'd pick up all the costs of an integrated prom.

When I went to the link- which told me remarkably little about Glover's speech except for the 2nd Amendment aspect, which I've only seen 99 times in the past month- there was a link to a petition to stifle statements such as those made by Glover.

The petition would tell me that students at TAMU are too immature to use critical thinking skills. People old enough to be in college should be able to hear and evaluate statements contrary to their own value systems.

It's called thinking for yourself.

"Whoa, Hoss. Signing a petition in no way, shape, or form suggests that a signer wants to stifle opposing or controversial views. On the contrary, signing such a petition sort of indicates that the signer has thought for their self.

It is quite possible to be willing to listen to what others wish to say without wanting to pay for the privilege.

For those folks who paid their way, or paid at least a big chunk of their educational costs rather than live off daddy or allowed themselves to suck at the government's teat, the idea of funding complete ass clowns to come lecture at them is anathema. I can't get terribly upset -I would not want to pay to listen to Al Sharpton nor would I want to fund a lecture series by David Duke.

If these folks want to exercise their rights to free political speech, bring it on. I'd pick them up at Easterwood and we could give them a pass to the salad bar at a chow hall.

As long as folks griping about paying for this swill don't start shouting down speakers, I don't think you can honestly say that they're unwilling to think. Btw how many right-of-center speakers have been shouted off the stage at so called centers of learning? I am thinking of folks like Ann Coulter."

Libs preach tolerance and open minded thinking EXCEPT for conservatives like Ann Coulter.

Weird

Deadwood: posted 11:07a, 01/19/13

Libs would scream if a private group paid to have a conservative speak. Libs are perfectly OK by having tax dollars or fees used to coerce those that don't want to hear this drivel to pay for it indirectly.

Hypocrisy at its core.

And how many "enlightened" libs have ever listened to Rush?

Or read an Ann Coulter book?

Most of the ones I know are more narrow minded than conservatives.

Weird.

Not many. But you are asking a lot. It is one of my main issues with punditry in general. I am not sure why it is so vogue to lace everything with sarcasm and satire if you have good case to make. Especially in an un-subtle age -- Swift's "Modest Proposal" would crash and burn today and create wild accusations of intents at genocide.

Most liberals probably have never listened to Rush's show for any length of time, but instead go by sound-bytes extracted from particular shows or websites. (There has been a show or two where Rush even proved this by showing how they were quoting a false quote of him or waaay out of context. Even funnier are the times when shows one media giant anchor after another saying and parroting almost the very same line first put out by the NYT or similar). So they never hear the more meat part of some of them, or similar radio, especially Dennis Prager.

I am not a regular listener of Rush but often tune in because many know who are, and to see what is being said. I do not trust sound-byte excerpts.

Ann Coulter is a bomb-thrower verbally---which is kind of unfortunate, because her books tend to be well-sourced in places or with good examples. I do think she made a good case for viewing Left-liberalism as essentially a religion with many of the same features.

Read Juan Williams and Carville's books. Similar case where maybe a right-winger wouldn't.

quote:

Most of the ones I know are more narrow minded than conservatives.

For all the talk about diversity, they don't practice in the ideas range much, using emotion to filter and reject many discussions without really weighing them. (Right-wingers do this too--but are called on it by academia).

A sociologist named Diana Munce had a fascinating finding in a study: "People with highest education have lowest exposure to people of conflicting points of view."

This apparently because of the clique-tendency among such groups, rather than how well read. I don't entirely agree with the idea -- it seems a little incomplete. More likely, those with ideological bent first , fit what she is talking about. I don't think genuine `questioners' lack exposure, imo.

Great news Ags, the State Legislature is being responsive to Texas A&M.

Last semester the Texas A&M Personal Protection bill overrode the veto of the Student Body President and passed the Texas A&M Personal Protection bill

Legislation was introduced yesterday to legalize the right of self-defense on college campuses by Senator Birdwell.

So far it has 13 Co-Sponsors:

What if we brought Neanderthals back and they really were smarter than we are? I read a short story about that very thing. It all started with a scientist cloning a Neanderthal, just as this article describes.

The idea in the story is that Neanderthals were much smarter than the Cro- Magnon men, but could could not survive the Ice Age due to their higher dietary requirements that came from being so large and muscular.

However, once Neanderthals were introducted into modern society with little resource scarcity, they started outcompeting modern man, taking all the best university slots, etc. The story was leading to another confrontation ... between us - them --- the Neanderthals intended to win this time.
