My .308 rifle shoots Federal Gold-Medal Match ammo, 165-grain BTHP. That is, Boat-Tail-Hollow-Point. It's the most consistent ammunition available for my rifle, without me having to reload. VERY expensive, but I'm working on precision, especially for ranges up to 800m, so it's worth it. I shoot 230-grain JHP through my .45 every time I go to the range. With the .45, the cost difference is negligible, so I practice with what I'd use in real life. Only with my 9mm pistols do I bother with standard ball ammo... because I burn a lot more 9mm than anything else, and the ball ammo shoots the same as the HP, so I save a few bucks. Hollow-point ammo isn't avoided because it's hollow-point. It's usually avoided at the range, because the shit's expensive.
The real question is why the goberment is buying it in such large quantities.
Of hollow points? Because they won't be target shooting with them?
Because they always buy stuff in large quantities.
