Mauritania: a history marked by political instability
Internally, Mauritania is characterized by chronic political instability. From 1978, the year in which President Mokhtar Ould Daddah was deposed by the military, the country lived through 13 coups d’état or attempted coups d’état before its first free, lawful, multiparty presidential election in early 2007 (Fichter, 2007, p. 17).
The presidency of Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, how ever, was brutally interrupted on [color=#800000]6 August 2008[/color]
by another coup d’état, which terminated the country’s first experience of democracy and brought the head of the presidential guard, Gen. Mohammed Ould Abdelaziz, to power. After a year during which his power was disputed, Abdelaziz won the presidential election on 18 July 2009,
which confirmed his legitimacy as the head of state (see Table 1).
