In a 2000 paper (PDF) he concluded that if you add a lag time of 23 years, lead emissions from automobiles explain 90 percent of the variation in violent crime in America.
Fascinating. First time I've read of this; thanks.
What I find fascinating is this seems to have only happened to non-wite people living in America.
Kinda like it was only "inner city youts" that ate the paint off the walls in the government-provided housing they lived in.

Really fascinating stuff and to me it appears to be scientifically sound research.
Fred,if you expect unbiased reporting from Mother Jones, you probably also think Stormfront provides balanced reporting.

I've heard through the grapevine that Viagra works wonders.
Really?

I saw that Robin wanted to ban you on the new Pope thread - I'll guess she's Catholic - a few days ago.
Those are probably the terms Nolu Chan is demanding in order to grace it again with his presence. He's quite special you know.

I will say this, oysters are supreme for staying power.
Red meat is also great.
Being healthy and not having cardiovascular disease helps too.

You mean the tag team of domer and sneakypete wasn't met with open arms by Robin?

So you're basically saying Robin will ban people in order to get others there. To bad you don't have the balls to call her on it to her face. bock bcok

You are waaaaay too obsessed with Robin, much as you are with most women posters who don't see eye to eye with you on the internet.

Where lead based paint and substandard housing are right next to railroads/interstates....
You mean people who weren't poor didn't have houses painted with lead-based paint?
What kind of paint did the "non-poor" use in their mansions?
Or could it be their children had better sense than to be eating paint?

What Americans Reality of the wealth distribution is.
The top 1 percent of Americans hold 50 percent of all investments in stocks and bonds, for example while 80 percent of Americans share a paltry 7 percent of the nations wealth.
But most interesting are the gaps between where Americans think we are and where we really we are when it comes to wealth. A full 92 percent of Americans agree on what a healthy, ideal wealth distribution curve would look like one that is far more equitable than what we think is the case. (That is telling, admittedly, says the narrator. The fact that most Americans know that the system is already skewed unfairly.")
But this perceived gap between ideal and reality is pocket change compared with the true state of inequality an ugly curve in which the poorest and middle class are a barely-indistinguishable line while the top 1 percent is, quite literally, off the charts.
When the tipping point occurs, it will be suddenly realized by all, that there will be no more reason to build roads, or fix existing roads, or build university buildings, or put braces on your kids teeth, etc. ALL perceptions of life-in-the-future will change, and most all economic activity that is deemed farther out than say, next week, will cease. Ninety nine year contracts will be a relic of a by-gone era; pensions and annuities will cease; cash will become king; and when that fails hard money will reign. When the public becomes fully aware of all the facts and the relevant conclusions to be derived from those facts, the phrase new paradigm will have true meaning.
Most of us didnt get the opportunity to learn any of this in high school, or to connect all the dots if we did study it, so it comes as a bit of a shock to most when they realize the implications of the principles and the facts. But the principles are founded on good biology, good geology and good economics. The facts are available if any choose to peruse them.
It will be in no ones best interest to factually report the reality of the decline of fossil fuels once it begins in earnest.
The Instant the Top 1% recognize DANgER, they leave.
Where did they go?
Please tell me,because all enamel paint back then was lead-based,so the rich kids had just as much opportunity to eat it as the poor kids.
Yet the rich kids never seemed to fail tests due to "brain damage from eating paint flakes."
Think Morgan Stanley leasing jets out of Tokyo on Mar 12 2011.....
That has WHAT to do with "inner-city chill-runs eatin de paints"?

Or could it be their children had better sense than to be eating paint?
And they're eating paint cause they're hungry.
What did their parents (mother) do with the AFDC money and the food stamps, buy lead paint with it to paint their goobermint apartment with?
You live in a house with Paint Flaking off the walls, sp?
No,but I have. We always solved the problem by sanding or wire brushing the loose paint and repainting it. I know that is a novel and radical approach compared to waiting for somebody from the government come and do it for you,but it worked for me.
Think that should be allowed?
HELL YES! If the parents don't care, why should the feral government, and how the HELL is it any of their business?

I know the solution! We should pass a feral law making everybody equally ambitious, intelligent, and hard-working,and put everybody in prison that doesn't obey the law!

the problem is that it takes generations to get into these substandard apts.
And generations of failed gov't policy.

Let me just say that nobody's spending Food stamps on paint.
Really? I'm shocked! SHOCKED,I TELL YA!
BTW,you mention HUD contracts. What's keeping these people from spending a little of their welfare/food stamp money to paint their apartments? After all, they live there for free, and it was THEIR children eating the lead paint chips. Who is most responsible for their children, them or the government?
Yeah,I know. It's a trick question because you think the government is responsible for everything because they're your daddy.

No,it doesn't. You are just confused and must have meant to write "there are people living in these apartments who have been living in government housing for generations, and being the parasites they are they would never dream of fixing anything because they think it's the governments job to wipe their asses after a visit to the toilet.
And generations of failed gov't policy.
They ARE generations of failed government policy.

Looking for winter weirdness 6
Jetstreammarch2013I wasn't expecting another instalment in this year's series of blog posts on Winter Weirdness, extreme weather events that could be linked to the decline in Arctic sea ice. It's not even winter anymore officially. But as spring has been revoked in large parts of Europe, and the atmospheric blocking that is causing it is being linked to Arctic sea ice as a potential cause, I figure it's a fitting end for the series.
One of the first articles alluding to the link, appeared on the Guardian's website on Monday: Scientists link frozen spring to dramatic Arctic sea ice loss. Stefan Rahmstorf, professor of Physics of the Oceans at Potsdam University, went further, writing a blog post showing the similarities between the current event and modeled projections in recent research that investigated the influence of Arctic sea ice loss on atmospheric patterns. Lepus Universalis Eli Rabett was so kind as to translate Rahmstorf's blog post to English:
