I want to put a combined heat and ac unit in my workshop,and am looking for brand advise as well as estimated expenses for purchase and installation costs. The shop is a 35x50 foot Quonset hut with a 18 foot ceiling. Right now I am thinking a 250k btu rating on the furnace.

You're a raving lunatic. petey, I'd give you free advice if I had any expertise in this area. Where I live most of us use heat pumps for both types of seasons - hot and cold. I think that would likely be what you need.

A heat pump will not draw heat out of the air when it gets below freezing outside. Then it uses electric heating elements, same as electric heat. The heating bills can be high in the winter.
Are you saying they are more expensive to operate than a regular electric furnace?

Mine is more than fifteen years old and it still works fine. A friend of mine with some knowledge told me that when I get a new one my electric bills will likely drop by one-third or so - because of the advances in efficiency/technology of the past 15+ years.
I thought I was being smart by buying two surplus central air units from the Air Force. They had been used to heat and cool a barracks or a warehouse at a closed base. BIG SOB's. Was going to use one for the shop,and one for the house. Got them home and found out I couldn't get a permit to get them installed because they were not up to modern efficiency ratings. The only good news was I basically bought them for scrap price,so all I lost was the expense money of going to get them.

Another friend told me that there are valuable innards on the heat pumps - copper likely being one of them. I did get an estimate about 1.5 years ago - the price dropped $500 if I gave the installer (a friend) my old unit - he's all about money so that tells me the 'scrap' is worth well over $500. Talk to someone in the business is my last suggestion since I have one reply remaining today. I'm heading to my Dad's tomorrow for Christmas week. Merry Christmas petey!
If the outside temp never gets above freezing, yes. When I got mine, the thermostat had an extra switch to enable the eletric heating elements. When I forgot to turn that on, the house stayed cold.

They are both still here,and so is a brand new one I bought in the very early 90's and never installed.I had plan to have it installed to cool my house,but right after buying it I had medical problems,and by the time I got all that paid for and back on my feet again,it was so outdated nobody would install that one,either. All these things were stored in my back yard,and mostly forgotten. Even when I did think of hauling them off to the crusher there were parts cars and trucks blocking them in I had to get rid of before I could even get to them. Plus,the parts cars and trucks took up a lot more room so I wanted to strip the valuable parts off of them and haul the carcasses off any how to make room and make it easier to cut grass. At one time I had between 22 and 25 parts cars in my yard,and that doesn't include the project cars I wanted to keep to fix,enjoy for a while,and then sell. I started feeling a little better last summer,and managed to strip and haul off 10 or 12 of them before it started getting colder and the price of steel dropped. At one time I was getting $12.50 per hundred lbs. Now that I have recovered from my last two surgeries and got that out of the way (AFAIK) I plan on getting back to stripping and hauling the rest of the junkers off this winter and spring. Depending on what the price of scrap is,of course. I stopped stripping and hauling them off the last time when the price dropped to $2.50 per pound. At that rate it just wasn't worth it. After all,all these cars and trucks are paid for,don't eat anything,and the price of steel will go up again. I'm probably back in the game again at $6.50 or so,but at anything less than that I have more important things to do with my time.

There are so many variables to this pete, but you can start by answering these questions.... For instance what state do you live in?? Is your building insulated?? What temperatures are you looking to maintain in the shop in summer and winter?? Can you burn wood for heat?? How aften do you plan on using your workshop?? Did the building have heat and A/C in it before??? Is the ductwork still there?? What are the minimum SEER ratings for new installations in your area?? (Probably 13 or higher)... Right now fossil fuels (nat gas, propane and wood) are the better way to heat because we currently have a glut of them... Electricity is the most expensive and will continue to climb because of what the Leftards are doing to the coal industry and EPA pollution standards... Buying a used/surplus A/C unit will be cheaper now but "MAY" cost you more later because that refrigerant R22 is being phased out and replaced with other ones... R22 right now is about $12 per lb (and will only go up in price not down) and the newer replacement ones are running around $6-10 per lb...

There are so many variables to this pete, but you can start by answering these questions.... For instance what state do you live in?? The mid-south. It gets below freezing here. Sometimes down into the teens at night,but we don't have the brutal winters the people further north have. Is your building insulated?? Partially,which in essence means "no". I didn't really want to insulate it until I put in heat and ac because right now the sun heats it up in the daytime. It's a galvanized Quonset hut. What temperatures are you looking to maintain in the shop in summer and winter?? Mostly 60F in the winter,and maybe 70 in the summer. Can you burn wood for heat?? Not a chance. Besides not wanting to waste my time cutting and hauling wood and ashes,I work on cars in there and there is gasoline vapors from the gas tanks,and I also plan on painting in there and there will be paint fumes floating around while I'm doing it. How aften do you plan on using your workshop?? Pretty much every day (or night,I mostly like working from around 9 PM to sunrise. I always feel better after dark and have more energy and am better able to concentrate. Did the building have heat and A/C in it before??? Is the ductwork still there?? Also,I thought electricity was very competitive now? I've had several people tell me recently that there wasn't much difference now between propane and electricity heating costs,plus you avoid getting another bill to pay each month. In fact,I had been thinking about a split unit,with electricity for the AC,and propane for the heat until I was told this. I have a 9x20 foot office and bathroom with a flat roof built inside my shop (NEVER try to raise wet 2x6 walls by yourself!),and had been thinking about putting the heating element right on that flat roof. The "office"/bathroom is inside and insulated to R-19,so I will be able to heat it with a space heater. Plan on either mounting a window unit high on a wall. I'd like to run a duct through the roof for the ac,but I'm afraid it would get so cold in there you could hang meat with the shop thermostat set high enough to cool the shop out there. I don't really want open windows in the office and bath because I would like to keep the fumes and dust out of there. Buying a used/surplus A/C unit will be cheaper now Not going to happen here. For a house you get the best results at around 30 btu per square foot, which would mean a 60 btu furnace would work, but with your application I'm not sure if that holds up. Is this something where you want to maintain a constant temperature, or do plan to heat or cool it only when occupied?

I plan on keeping it heated to between 50 and 60 degrees all the time. Otherwise the heater will run non-stop for hours just to warm the place up to a comfortable level. There is a lot of stuff in there that have to get warmed up before the air temps in there warm up. Chances are I will turn it up to 65 unless I am doing bodywork or painting,and then I will turn it up to 70. In the summer when it's real hot I will most likely do what I have been doing,putting the screen doors I built back in the tracks of my garage doors,and run the exhaust fans in each gable end during the daytime. I've been removing the screens and closing the garage doors at night,and let the exhaust fans blow out the hot air. Each one is rated to handle the air flow for a building this size,so the two of them working do a pretty good job. Once I get ac installed I'll just run it at night with the thermostat set around 74 if I'm not in there,and lower if I am. Since I have a full bath with shower and hot water in there,chances are during hot weather I will just stay out there all night working. If I get sleepy I can just hang my hammock and take a nap. I have a coffee pot,microwave,tv,computer,and refrigerator already out there,so it's not like it would be a hardship. I like working nights anyhow. It's quieter. Can't do it now in the summer because the mosquitoes and gnats will drive you crazy if you turn on the shop lights after dark. Even with screen doors in place. No matter what you do,if there is a light burning and the tiniest crack,the mosquitoes and gnats will find it and come in. Plus,there is a bear that comes through my yard at night,and I don't want him smelling the cat food inside and coming in there to be with me.
