Title: VETOED: Michigan Governor Rejects Bill That Would Allow Conceal-Carry In Schools, Churches and Sports Stadiums

On December 14, the very day twenty children and seven adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, the Michigan State legislature enacted a bill that would have allowed the concealed carrying of firearms in traditionally gun-free zones:

The Michigan Legislature has enacted a bill allowing people who undergo extra training to carry concealed weapons in places such as schools, churches, day care centers and sports stadiums where they previously were off-limits.

Another provision would eliminate county concealed weapons licensing boards, with sheriffs taking over their duties.

Under the bill, people who concealed carry in gun-free zones would have to get enhanced training beyond basic requirements and spend additional time at the gun range.

That bill, which is by far one of the most sensible legislative actions this year, made its way to the desk of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

Ironically, after citing the Sandy Hook school shooting, the Republican governor promptly vetoed the legislation.

“While we must vigilantly protect the rights of law-abiding firearm owners, we also must ensure the right of designated public entities to exercise their best discretion in manners of safety and security,” he said. “These public venues need clear legal authority to ban firearms on their premises if they see fit do so.”

Safety and security?

Had a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a student at Virgina Tech, a movie goer in Aurora, Colorado, or a pilot on one of the four planes downed on September 11th been armed, scores of lives could have been saved.

The Michigan legislature took an important first step towards introducing Constitution-friendly legislation that puts the power of self defense and personal preservation back into the hands of law abiding American citizens.

However, instead of embracing legislation that could prevent, or at the very least minimize, mass-murder incidents in the future, Michigan’s governor, and a host of other political figures and foreign governments that would disarm the citizenry, are taking exactly the opposite approach.

Amid all of the emotionally driven rhetoric surrounding the perceived dangers of owning firearms, few have considered a realistic approach to stopping violent criminals and psychopaths who have no regard for the law or human life. With nearly one gun in America for every person, the task of executing a ban would be daunting, not to mention dangerous for law enforcement officials given that what we’re talking about here is disarming Americans, arguably the most heavily armed citizenry in the history of the world.

Gun bans, as we’ve seen in Australia and the UK, do not work, despite what the communist Chinese suggest we do (speaking of China, has anyone considered that maybe there’s a reason the Chinese want the American people disarmed?)

Does anyone realistically think that a gun ban will remove every one of the nearly 300 million guns in America? Or that mass murders will somehow be prevented once law abiding citizens no longer have access to ‘assault rifles’ ? Do those supporting executive action to supplant the Second Amendment by banning assault rifles actually believe this is the solution? Are we to believe that once guns are banned, that the other 750 million weapons throughout the world won’t make their way to America’s shores via the black market?

We need to be realistic here and understand that guns are not going away, and neither are criminals and those with mental health issues.

Legislation allowing concealed carry in public venues, especially schools, sports stadiums and other high-priority terrorist targets at least gives us a fighting chance.

The alternative is sheep being led to slaughter, just as we saw last Friday.

I say introduce a bill that allows open carry.

The author seems to think that a concealed carry permit means that the gun owner has taken Swat or hours of defensive training, in using a concealable gun against much more efficient methods such as that AR 15 which had already taken on an offensive ambush position. This is more like bringing a knife to a gunfight, requiring the user to make up the difference in firing capabilities by having superior knowledge of defensive tactics not to mention quick reflexes, raw courage and superior analytical and critical thinking skills, versus just plain dumb luck.

As an example, a basic course in firearms safety and law plus possibly a little range time is all that's required in California if one's "Good Cause" is approved.

Almost every country in the Middle East is awash in oil, and we have to side with the one that has nothing but joos. Goddamn, that was good thinkin'. Esso posted on 2012-01-13 7:37:56 ET

I believe that Michigan is open carry, but it needs to be extended to include the present gun-free kill zones. IMO concealed carry should be OK too. It's probably better if the perps don't know who's carrying.

What makes you think that pinning a badge on a person makes them a tactical whiz?

These "pros" often take multiple hi-cap mags worth of shooting to hit a suspect if they ever do. If they're even at the right house, and even have a reason to start shooting in the first place.

They figure the police union can get them out of trouble, so they just start spraying and praying.

Only guttless cowards and two-bit tin-horn ditators living in isolated, armed communities, surrounded by armed troopers and security, 24/7, wherever they are, would deny the average citizine a fighting chance to stay alive and save their families.~ jmho! Murron

One year after Snyder moved in, he now (after taxpayer funded security improvements) lives in a 'gated community' on Geddes Road west of Dixboro.

Live updates from protest against Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder near Ann Arbor

Staying Near Ann Arbor, Snyder Keeps Fancier House

Published: Wednesday, January 05, 2011

SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP (AP) — New Gov. Rick Snyder is getting used to being driven to work each day by a state trooper. But the ride starts each day at his home near Ann Arbor, not at the official governor’s residence in Lansing.

Snyder, who is staying in his own home so his teenage daughter doesn’t have to change schools, gets the side benefit of keeping the indoor pool, wine cellar and movie theater that are part of his 10,600-square-foot home.

The stately two-story house in a subdivision of million-dollar homes in Washtenaw County’s Superior township doesn’t have the wrought-iron fence and other measures that separate the governor’s residence from passers-by. It does have state police protection, and likely is getting security upgrades — a topic the state police won’t discuss.

“We don’t want to disclose what we’re doing,” state police spokeswoman Shanon Banner said Wednesday. “It just makes our job harder when people know what our security plans are.”

For now, Snyder’s neighbors likely are noticing few changes. Outside the home on Tuesday several large SUVs were parked in the driveway and at the curb, but no uniformed troopers were visible. Residents and visitors can still drive in through the gates at the entrance to the small subdivision without interference.

Snyder is the first Michigan governor elected since the Lansing residence was donated to the state in 1969 to decline to live there. He’s among a handful of governors across the nation who have made that choice. That includes Ohio

Gov. John Kasich, governors in Idaho and New York, and both of New Jersey’s most recent governors — Democrat Jon Corzine and current GOP Gov. Chris Christie.

Snyder wants to keep his daughter, Kelsey, at the small private school in Ann Arbor where she’s in the 9th grade. He also has a daughter attending the University of Michigan and a son who graduated last year from Albion College. His wife, Sue, is active in a variety of activities in the Ann Arbor area.

The Republican governor says his 80-mile commute of just over an hour is common for many workers in the state, and points out he has the advantage of being able to work while a state trooper does the driving.

“He’s still productively getting his work done in the back seat,” Snyder communications director Geralyn Lasher said.

Another residence Snyder will be able to take advantage of is the 1902 governor’s summer home on Mackinac Island. The home, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has 11 bedrooms, nine and a half bathrooms and a sweeping covered porch with a stunning view of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge.

Snyder plans to use the Lansing residence for meetings, entertaining and the occasional overnight stay. He said during his campaign that he’d consider renting it out to raise money for the cash-strapped state, but Lasher said he now realizes that’s not feasible because of security issues. (flash forward to Dec. 2012, security fears..solved)

Newly renovated and expanded in 2003 and 2004 with $2.5 million in private funds, the 8,700-square-foot residence backs up onto the Grand River and boasts four acres of meticulous landscaping, as well as a vertical wind turbine and solar panels installed under the previous governor, Democrat Jennifer Granholm.

The residence has five bedrooms, a private family room that includes a kitchenette, a fully commercial kitchen and an exercise room with two treadmills, a weight machine and a weight bench. The renovation of the original part of the house included ripping out old wiring and plumbing, replacing all the windows, adding insulation — there was none — and removing asbestos, leaded paint, PCBs and black mold.

During the early part of the renovation, Granholm lived in a small room above the garage. When her family of five moved in, they ate meals in the garage for months until the construction was done.

Granholm recently moved into a rented condominium in the Lansing suburbs so her 13-year-old son, Jack, can finish 8th grade at his East Lansing middle school. She expects to announce a new job soon.

Banner noted that Granholm commuted early in her first term from her home in Northville near Detroit, and said extra money was budgeted to deal with changes in security measures between Granholm and Snyder. She declined to say how much the department is spending to secure Snyder’s home near Ann Arbor, protect him and his family and guard the Lansing residence.

“They’re still working through the logistics of what they’re planning to do,” she said of arrangements between Snyder and police. “A lot of that has not been finalized yet.”
