The seven-foot-high cross was stolen late Sunday or early Monday by thieves who cut the metal bolts that attached the symbol to a rock in the sprawling desert preserve, National Park Service spokeswoman Linda Slater said. The nearly 80-year-old war memorial cross had been at the center of a decade-long legal battle as the ACLU sought to have it removed from what was then federal land. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and the high Court overturned a lower court ruling which had held the cross unconstitutional. Earlier this year, a settlement was reached transferring ownership of the property on which the memorial sits from federal to private hands. On Sunday, Veterans Day, 100 people gathered at sunrise rock as a replacement cross was re-erected there. The Associated Press reports, “Henry Sandoz, who cared for the original 1930s cross as part of a promise to a dying World War I veteran, rededicated a new, 7-foot steel cross on the same hilltop before more than 100 people.” The Congressional Prayer Caucus, members of which the ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice)represented before the Supreme Court in an amicus brief defending the cross, released a statement saying, “The restoration of the Mojave memorial is a welcome victory, and will ensure that this historic symbol is preserved for future generations.” This war memorial cross – a historic symbol of sacrifice – once again stands, honoring our military veterans who fought valiantly defending our freedom in World War I. That this cross remains today is a testament not just to our veterans but to all those who are willing to take a stand in defense of our heritage as a nation. The ACLJ is pleased that this long fought battle to defend the cross has successfully resulted in the cross’s rededication, and hope that it will remain for generations to come as a tribute to our veterans. It could not have been a better way to truly celebrate Veterans Day.

LOS ANGELES -- Thieves have stolen a cross in the Mojave Desert that was built to honor Americans who died in war, less than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the religious symbol to remain on federal land. 
A historic war memorial known as the Mojave Desert Cross was returned to its rightful place in a fitting Veterans Day (Nov 11, 2012) ceremony at Sunrise Rock.

An actress who appeared in the anti-Muslim film blamed for sparking violence in the Middle East has lost another legal bid to have the trailer taken down from YouTube. A federal judge in Los Angeles denied a motion for injunction on Friday by Cindy Lee Garcia. It wasn't immediately known whether Garcia's attorneys would file an appeal. Garcia lost a similar legal challenge in state court when a judge rejected her lawsuit in September. The judge's ruling means the 14-minute film, which has been blamed for sparking deadly violence, can continue to be viewed online. U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald of Santa Clara, California, rejected Garcia's claims of copyright infringement. The judge also canceled a hearing set for December 3 on oral arguments over Garcia's request. 'I have been doing feature films, just finished Broken Roads with Crevice Entertainment, also just wrapped up Dessert Warriors/played a supporting role,' she wrote. She lists shooting as one of her hobbies, saying she is 'very good with guns, love shooting am A Member Of Kern County Gun Club. Spend as much time as I can on the gun range'. After a 14-minute trailer of the film was posted online, protests broke out throughout the Middle East and U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens was killed inside the Libyan embassy. The next day, Garcia called the producer - who she still thought was named Sam Bacile - in a panic. 'I called Sam and said, 'Why did you do this?' and he said, 'I'm tired of radical Islamists killing each other. Let other actors know it's not their fault,'' Garcia said. She is furious about the changes that were made after filming, as the final product refers to Muhammed as a pedophile and child molester. For many Muslims, any depiction of the prophet is blasphemous. Caricatures deemed insulting in the past have provoked protests and drawn condemnations from officials, preachers, ordinary Muslims and many Christians. U.S. officials have said authorities were not investigating the film project itself, and that even if it was inflammatory or led to violence, simply producing it cannot be considered a crime in the United States, which has strong free speech laws.
