BEIJING -- In the middle of an eastern Chinese city's new main road, rising incongruously from a huge circle in the freshly laid pavement, is a five-story row house with ragged edges. This is the home of the duck farmer who said "no."

Luo Baogen and his wife are the lone holdouts from a neighborhood that was demolished to make way for the main thoroughfare heading to a newly built railway station on the outskirts of the city of Wenling in Zhejiang province.

Dramatic images of Luo's home have circulated widely online in China this week, becoming the latest symbol of resistance in the frequent standoffs between Chinese homeowners and local officials accused of offering too little compensation to vacate neighborhoods for major redevelopment projects.

There's even a name for the buildings that remain standing as their owners resist development. They are called "nail houses" because the homeowners refuse to be hammered down.

Nail house families occasionally have resorted to violence. Some homeowners have even set themselves on fire in protests. Often, they keep 24-hour vigils because developers will shy away from bulldozing homes when people are inside.

Xiayangzhang village chief Chen Xuecai said in a telephone interview Friday that city planners decided that Luo's village of 1,600 had to be moved for a new business district anchored by the train station. Chen said most families agreed to government-offered compensation in 2007.

Luo, 67, and a handful of neighbors in other parts of the new district are holding out for more.

"We want a new house on a two-unit lot with simple interior decoration," Luo told local reporters Thursday in video footage forwarded to The Associated Press.

Luo had just completed his house at a cost of about 600,000 yuan ($95,000) when the government first approached him with their standard offer of 220,000 ($35,000) to move out – which he refused, Chen said. The offer has since gone up to 260,000 yuan ($41,000).

Old man. Obama is President. You think Obama is an improvement over Bush don't you? Come on admit it his support of queer marriage won you over.

Was it Romney's support for gay marriage, or the baby killing that won you over?

His abandoning those positions made him acceptable.

You see Romney can be pushed by public opinion. Obama can't as he sees it as his duty to bring us down.

Enjoy your death panels you voted for.

I'm pretty sure the only reason this house is still standing is because the owner's BIL is the local commie in charge of the demolition.

That was the lip service to the rubes that Romney needed to win. He knows you guys are so gullible you will fall for anything.

I'm surprised he and his BIL are still standing, never mind the house. This is the Chinese governments wishes they are disturbing, and they traditionally just put a bullet in the back of the heads of people who do this, and then pave right over them.

He's Yukon/Fire Island Lite.

Speaking of which, notice that Yukon is on the verge of getting banned over at elPee?

No,but now that you mention it,I haven't been attacked by him in a couple of days now. For all I know he could already be banned.

At a minimum he is on another time-out.

Goldi gave him his alleged "last warning." One month probation, whatever that means. I guess his posting is limited. She's finally gotten sick of his nonstop personal attacks. Wonder what took her so long.

And Fire Island hasn't posted since Nov. 6. I wonder if he got banned too. Finally Goldi is cleaning house.

Yes, yukon was given a one month timeout. I saw him posting a day or two later and I've since learned that he is restricted to 5 posts a day on elPee...I suppose for that one month period.

It must be killing him...LOL.

I'm sure he stays busy polishing his attack macros and dreaming of nutless men.

No doubt. Given how much he posts (or used to post there), I'd say elPee is his life.

Maybe they are both away on one of the "mans, man" cruises where they all drink fruit-flavored drinks and dance around in grass skirts?

Or maybe Gay Island was another one of Yu-Tards on-line personas? I've been saying for a while now that the GI posting the last several months sounded and acting nothing like the GI that was posting last year, and that somebody might have hacked his account and are posing as him.

Who do we all know that obsesses with hacked accounts?

Notice that Gaylin and the "Rear" Admiral aren't showing up to post, either.

Starting to look like all of Yu-Tards friends were all him, isn't it?

I did notice Fire Island is MIA too. Gaylin did post a thread about the NYPD cop giving new boots to a homeless man - his first post in about three weeks.

Not much from the canary posse - petey, you might have a point.
