Gay rights activists plan kiss demonstrations at Chick-fil-A stores Friday, just days after the company set a sales record when customers flocked to the restaurants to show support for the fast-food chain owner's opposition to gay marriage. Who would have thought that the struggle for gay rights would be entwined with fast food chicken sandwiches? Gay rights protesters responded to Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day with Same Sex Kiss Day two days later. Organizers encouraged supporters of gay rights to stage a "kiss in" on Friday. People smooched their loved ones at Chick-fil-A outlets and snapped photos for social media sites, such as Tumblr and Facebook. But organizers, expectedly, encouraged participants to eat elsewhere. Carl McGehee, a Dallas-based political activist, thought of the kiss-in. "I hope the visibility of the kiss-in helps LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) youth who feel isolated and are victims of bullying," McGehee explained. "I want LGBT youth who are growing up in places like Texas, where I was raised, to know that it's okay to be who you are, because it seems that (Chick-fil-A president Dan) Cathy disagrees with that." Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day distressed many liberal groups Wednesday. Hundreds of thousands of customers clogged the fast-food chain across the country to support "Christian principles." “While we don’t release exact sales numbers, it was an unprecedented day,” said Chick-fil-A’s executive vice president of marketing, Steve Robinson. Groups like the It Gets Better Project were established to show LGBT youth that, despite the seemingly endless number of people who bully gays, they are not alone. For gay rights supporters, the droves of people opposing gay marriage in the outlets' drive-through lanes and counter lines serve as a reminder that acceptance of marriage equality still has a long way to go. Chick-fil-A’s Dan Cathy ignited a national controversy when he affirmed the restaurant's opposition to gay marriage. He told the Baptist Press that the company supported "the biblical definition of the family unit," upsetting gay marriage advocates. The subsequent debates gave rise to Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. He wrote that Chick fil-A is "a great American story that is being smeared by vicious hate speech and intolerant bigotry from the left." For some, simply kissing wasn't the extent of their protest. When employees of a Chick-fil-A in Torrance, Calif. arrived to work Friday morning, they received a message from activists. Graffiti reading "Tastes Like Hate" was sprawled across the side of the building, reports KTLA. No one has been arrested for the vandalism. Even Wendy's stepped into the argument when Jim Furman, a Wendy’s franchise owner in North Carolina, posted the message "We stand with Chick-fil-A” outside several of his fast-food establishments, according to the Daily Mail. Wendy's responded via Twitter: "An independent franchisee posted the sign, which he's taken down. We proudly serve ALL customers!" The slogan for Same Sex Kiss Day was "Kiss Mor Chiks," with a picture of two women kissing - a play on the Chick-fil-A slogan "Eat Mor Chikin," which is usually delivered on misspelled placards by protesting cows. First, "Kiss in" lacks a purpose and the organizer don't have a clear goal for this protest. I'm trying to figure out what are they trying to accomplish by kissing someone in front or inside of a Chic-fil-a store? I just hope that this kind of protest will not backfire against us and bring even more turmoil to the already heated gay marriage debate. I hope the organizer of "kiss in" understand that President Obama is just pandering to gays for our votes not because he care about the gay marriage issue. I believe everyone has they right to their own convictions and believe system they grew up with. I also believe in the right to free speech.
