The longtime public relations head for the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain died Friday morning, WRBL-TV reports. In a statement to the station, the company confirmed the death of Vice President for Corporate Relations Don Perry. “Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years,” the statement said. “He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him.” Though the statement did not identify the cause of Perry’s death, a relative of Chick-Fil-A founder CEO Dan Cathy told the station it happened after a heart attack. Perry’s death comes in the midst of the company being widely criticized following Cathy’s admission that he runs the company “on biblical principles” and has donated millions of dollars to anti-LGBT organizations. The Jim Henson Company recently decided to sever ties with the company, which was also publicly criticized by Boston mayor Thomas Menino. A same-sex kiss-in protest event has also been proposed on Facebook. In response, Fox News host Mike Huckabee encouraged his supporters to eat at Chick-Fil-A en masse on August 1, as a response to attacks by “militant homosexual advocates.” “The attempts to hurt or destroy Chick Fil-A is nothing short of economic bullying,” he wrote on In the name of ‘tolerance,’ there is an effort being mounted to put pressure on people to stop eating at Chick Fil-A. … The Christian world view of Dan Cathy is being met with intolerance and vicious hate speech.”

A business owner’s political or religious beliefs should not be a test for the worthiness of his or her application for a business license,” the Boston Globe complained in a July 25 editorial. “History will render judgment on the views of Chick-fil-A executives. City Hall doesn’t have to,” the editorial board concluding, having noted that there’s no evidence that Chick-fil-A breaks any anti-discrimination laws. Mayor Emanuel should “back off” thundered the Chicago Sun-Times. “Government has no business withholding zoning permits and licenses just because it objects to a businessman’s religious or political views,” the editorial board added in its July 25 opinion. It’s one thing for private organizations to boycott or pull out of business arrangements, but it’s another thing entirely “for government to put on the squeeze.” Indeed. And now, here are the editors of the Los Angeles Times going after the Boston mayor: As both a private citizen and a prominent public figure, Menino is welcome to abstain from fried chicken sandwiches and urge others to do likewise. It’s a different matter if he attempts to trample the free-speech rights of others by using the power of his office to fight against a business license for Chick-fil-A. Menino suggested that it would be appropriate to block the chain from opening in Boston because Cathy’s views amount to discrimination. That would rightly apply if Chick-fil-A were to refuse service to gay customers; the city has a right and an obligation to prevent discriminatory actions against its residents and visitors. But there’s no evidence that any such thing has occurred. Menino referred derisively to Chick-fil-A’s possible plans to open a restaurant along the city’s Freedom Trail, considering Cathy’s stand on marriage freedom. That too misreads law and history. It was the freedom to express politically unpopular views and to oppose such views that the Founding Fathers fought to establish. Boston used to be known as the prudish place most likely to ban anything outside of a set of strait-laced moral beliefs. Without freedom to express once unpopular viewpoints — in this case, full civil rights for gay and lesbian couples — Massachusetts wouldn’t have become the first state to recognize same-sex marriage.

Good luck red. I'_ sure you'll co_e through this trial just fine. I had a follow up colonoscopy yesterday. All looked good. I also had the port re_oved fro_ the chest wall. As well as a GI peek at the sto_ach which showed 3 ulcers, but thankfully they weren't cancerous. Also had a gall bladder test 2 weeks ago and will undergo another CT scan of _y torso in two weeks. Hopefully that will be all good and I can get a little reprieve fro_ all the Dr. stuff! The purges before the colonscopies are the worst! ; ))) Let us know when you head in to surgery so we can ask our Lord to watch over you and guide your care givers. (Will do that anyway, but want to know to keep you in _ind). Guess it's ti_e to plug in the new keyboard -y hubby picked up yesterday while I was under! lol
