Title: Pentagon’s 30,000-Pound Bunker-Buster ‘Superbomb’ Ready For Use

The biggest conventional bomb ever developed is ready to wreak destruction upon the enemies of the US. Air Force Secretary Michael Donley said its record-breaking bunker-buster has become operational after years of testing.

“If it needed to go today, we would be ready to do that,” said Donley. “We continue to do testing on the bomb to refine its capabilities, and that is ongoing. We also have the capability to go with existing configuration today.”

The Pentagon has spent $330 million to develop and deliver more than 20 of the precision-guided Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker-busters, which are designed to blast through up to 200 feet of concrete.

Although there has previously been a bigger nuclear device, the new conventional rocket is six times the weight of the previous bunker-buster used by the US Air Force, and carries an explosive payload of 5,300 pounds.

US military chiefs openly admitted the weapon was built to attack the fortified nuclear facilities of “rogue states” such as Iran and North Korea. Although the Pentagon insists that it is not aimed at a specific threat, unnamed officials within the ministry have repeatedly claimed the bomb is being tailor-made to disable Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, or at least to intimidate Tehran.

Iran is working at breakneck speed to expand its Fordo uranium enrichment facility, which is built inside a mountain in the heart of the country, and has previously been declared “impregnable” by senior officials in Tehran. Iran has often paraded its fast-advancing nuclear program, while denying that it intends to build a nuclear bomb.

Earlier this year, the Pentagon rapidly diverted $120 million in two separate tranches from other weapons programs to MOPs. The money was transferred to significantly redesign and upgrade the precision-guided missile to provide “an enhanced threat response” against the “deepest bunkers.”

Donley’s claim can be read as a reassertion of US determination to thwart Iran’s atomic ambitions.

Whether the MOP would be able to actually destroy Fordo is open to debate and may not be known by either of the sides.

The effectiveness of bunker-busters depends on the strength of the soil into which it plunges, how well it makes contact, and the internal structure of the facilities. In the case of Fordo, the US may only have a sketchy idea of its layout.

At best, the US believes a successful strike could set the Iranian program back several years, and, at worst, to at least collapse the passageways to the facility and force substantial rebuilding work.

Two bombs can be mounted simultaneously on a modified B-52 bomber, and a US official previously claimed the effectiveness of any operation would depend on how many “tries at the apple” the US bombers get.

Nonetheless, even if the MOP can be of limited effectiveness against Iran, the United States has precious little alternative. The only other weapon capable of destroying such a facility from the air would be a tactical nuclear missile.

I can't see the USAF attempting to send a B-52 into Iran until well after a pretty serious war has started and after the US has control of Iranian skies.

Not an option.

From the Top of the Great Pyramid (2008)

At the largest scale, empires are also grounded in pyramid dynamics, which is why they too have a limited lifespan. They grow by assuming control, either politically or economically, of new territories, positioning themselves to cream off surpluses from an ever-expanding geographical area in a form of involuntary buy-in ...

… Wealth conveyors in favour of the economic centre, at the expense of the hinterland, are the very heart of empire, but without continual expansion to feed rapidly developing central complexity, they eventually fail, leaving the centre unable to sustain its existing complexity level. As with economic bubbles, empires hollow out in the latter stages, consuming their own substance in a catabolic manner in order to compensate for the inability to strengthen wealth conveyors sufficiently quickly to keep pace with the expanding requirements of the centre.

Especially with the radar signature the ("Buff") B52 has at high altitude....

You would have to drop the bomb at high altitude to get the max terminal velocity required to achieve max penetration!!! Hence the preferred use of the B2 for this scenario, radar invisibility...

But the facility is supposed to be inside a mountain so you may have to consider an alternative scenario......

Now if the doors to the facility are accessible to a low level penetrator then I would go with the B1B, that is if the weapon can be fit into it's conformal bomb bays... If the weapon cannot be fit into a B1B but the facility doors are accessible to a low level penetrator then I would rig up a B52D "Buff" with radio control, load it with 2 weapons and do a Kamikaze style attack on the doors. With over 150 tons of bomb and aircraft impacting on the access doors it would rip the whole side of the mountain to shreds...

Even if it doesn't destroy the facility it should set them back far enough that it would give us time to figure out another option to rememdy the situation.... Like maybe give some support to the people of Iran who want to be free of the mullahs and ayatollah... They tried to overthrow their government back in 2009 and Obozo just stood idly by and watched them be slaughtered..... A new president with some hair on his webbels just might make that scenario a possibility...

Choosing and voting for a presidential candidate is like picking which STD you want to suffer from….

I would guess that kinetic energy is part of how the bombs are able to blast through 200 feet of concrete, and that how the bomb impacts the target is also part of the secret. So a kamakazi B-52 just crashing might give unpredictable / failing results.

As for how to remedy the situation, I'd suggest just leaving Iran alone with the knowledge that since they've never started a war with another country that doesn't border their own -- and I'm not even sure they did start the one with Iraq -- it's unlikely they ever will, especially as they know that Israel is already nuke-armed to the teeth and doing anything to them would be suicide.
