Penn State plans to remove its statue of Joe Paterno from campus this weekend, reports NFL Network’s Kimberly Jones on Twitter. (Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 counts of sexual abuse.) An ESPN.com report last Sunday said that the school had decided to let the statue stand. The school released a statement that evening denying that a decision had been made. “Contrary to various reports, neither the Board of Trustees nor University Administration has taken a vote or made a decision regarding the Joe Paterno statue at Beaver Stadium,” the statement read. The statue had been a rallying point for many last fall when the legendary football coach was fired by the university on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of Sandusky’s arrest. The statue’s place on campus has come under fire recently. Some argued that it was another reminder of the way that football pervaded the culture of the university. Since the Freeh Report’s release, “Paternoville,” the name given to the tents set up by students waiting outside Beaver Stadium before home football games, was changed to “Nittanyville.” Brown University, Paterno’s alma mater, took the late coach’s name off the trophy given to its top male athlete. A small plane also flew over campus with a banner reading, “Take the statue down or we will.” In response, a group of students started a vigil to keep watch over the statue.

A healthier response to the rapo behavior this coach learned about would of been to break the perp's legs at the knees. I agree with you, this school should lose it's right to have a football program for a while to send a critical message; this behavior is heinous and never OK.
I guess they could leave the statue and hang this sign around his neck: "Showed Total Disregard for the Safety and Welfare of Sandusky’s Child Victims"
. What took them so long? Paterno's legacy is now one of failure and of shame. Football doesn't mean sh!t when compared to even one of those poor kid's lives. He allowed Sandusky to operate for YEARS. Sandusky DID it, but Paterno et. al. enabled the behavior. Talk about FILTH, and you know what? Neither Sandusky or Paterno cussed! So they must really be OK? right? /S

I lived in PA for a number of years way back when. JoePa was a living legend for nearly half a century. I see your points but I can't hate the man may he RIP. I hate the sins. Big college sports programs, not just football, are part of the problem.
Big college sports programs, not just football, are part of the problem. Fred my dad was from PA. I grew up LOVING Penn State AND JoePa. I didn't say anything about HATING JoePa. I hold him responsible because he was the Penn State CAPTAIN. JoePa's FAILURES allowed this monstrosity to go on for YEARS involving multiple victims. Of course SANDUSKY was responsible for what he did, AND JoePa is guilty of what he did NOT do as SANDUSKY'S CAPTAIN. It rips me up to say this, but it is the TRUTH, and it MUST be said. Re football; it's ALL about MONEY Fred. I quit watching/paying attention to anything involving the NFL after they let Vick back in. They don't get my money, EVER, for anything. I WAS a NFL fan for over 50 years. I hitch hiked 150 miles in Alaska winter to get a TV to watch the NFL. I've often walked twenty miles to watch a NFL game back in the day. What's right is RIGHT what is wrong is WRONG. F' the NFL, and all of the rest of sports entertainment. Go out and DO something! instead of watching others do things. I quit watching TV when it's daylight. DAYLIGHT is way more important than ANY TV show. The College game was my last refuge. BUT it's just business to most of the people involved in it also. Why do you think JoePa wanted to keep everything quiet? Anyhow RIP JoePa, we now know what really killed you. But, the decency and responsibility that YOU taught for generations, requires that your own statue must come down because of this. I've have to believe that this is what your putative honorable self would actually want.
