United States News Title: Rand Paul to Mitt Romney: Support Audit the Fed bill Senator Rand Paul said Wednesday that he wants presidential candidate Mitt Romney to come out publicly in support of Ron Paul's Audit the Fed bill. His father's bill recently passed by a voice vote in the House oversight committee, and will come up for a full vote in the House next month. Senator Paul said that if Governor Romney were to do that, he believes it would be one way to bring some of Ron Paul's supporters into the Mitt Romney camp. It is significant that the vote on this bill, and presumably Mitt Romney's support for it, would come before what is expected to be a contentious Republican national convention. Reigning in the Federal Reserve is the signature issue for Dr. Paul's campaign, and the one issue that separates Ron Paul supporters from much of the rest of the Republican Party. When voters gain an appreciation for the damage that is done to the free enterprise system by the often covert actions of the Federal Reserve, many of them become Ron Paul supporters and they never go back. If Governor Romney were to say he agreed with Dr. Paul on this issue, and he was willing to put his political reputation on the line - in a real sense validating Dr. Paul and his supporters, it might create some "softening" toward Governor Romney. This would be especially significant because many of Paul's ardent supporters believe Mitt Romney is too cozy with the investment banks and other crony capitalist enterprises that are the chief benefactors of enabling from the Federal Reserve. If Romney comes out in favor of Audit the Fed, he would be siding with the American people and the middle class against the socialist, crony capitalists. If Romney were to do this now it might also help inoculate him from the criticism being levied at him by the Obama campaign and their friends in the corporate media that he is himself a rich benefactor of the central banking system, and a financial insider who would cater to the elites in the corporate and banking sectors instead of helping middle income people. The apolitical libertarians and the hard core anarcho-capitalists will never vote for Mitt Romney because they do not believe Romney reflects their values. However, Senator Paul seems to believe that some of the presumably Republican-leaning Paulites, who are more aligned with the philosophy and the attitude of Rand Paul, might get behind Romney if he shows them he is on their side with respect to the Fed. Rand Paul seems to be saying to Romney, "If you want our support, put your reputation on the line and get behind our core issue". This is indeed a serious bit of political maneuvering by the astute Paul, who undoubtedly believes that Governor Romney knows he can not win the presidency without votes from Paul's people. Thus, Rand Paul's game-plan seems pretty transparent and Governor Romney would be wise to play.
