High-speed trading tools pioneered in the stock market are increasingly driving price movements on Amazon’s website as independent sellers use them to undercut and outwit each other in a cut-throat online market place.

Product prices now change as often as every 15 minutes as some of the 2m sellers on Amazon’s site join the online retailer in using computerised tools – often developed by former data miners at investment banks – to lure shoppers with the best deals.

However, this “robo-pricing” has become a source of tension as Amazon competes against its own clients while it enjoys access to their sales information and has greater experience of data mining.

Amazon sellers – using third-party software – can set rules to ensure that their prices are always, for example, $1 lower than their main rival’s. More complex algorithms can analyse historical data to set prices most likely to secure a more prominent position on the Amazon website.

However, the tools also create the risk of malfunctions similar to the 2010 “flash crash”, when so-called “algo trading” was blamed for some US stock prices plunging to near zero, then rebounding in the space of 20 minutes.

Last year out-of-control algorithms inflated the price of The Making of a Fly, a genetics book, to over $23m, according to Michael Eisen, a biologist who blogged about it.

Some sellers have even created dummy accounts with ultra-low prices to deliberately pull down those of rivals so they can corner a market by buying their goods, say pricing experts. That practice violates Amazon’s rules of conduct.

Eric Best of Mercent, a Seattle developer of ecommerce tools, said: “Pricing is becoming like equity trading, with real-time reflection of supply and demand, increasingly sophisticated rules, and all the consequences for unexpected results.”

Amazon has gotten very greedy. It used to charge the lowest prices for shipping with awesome speed. Those days are all gone.

I choose other Internet marketplaces anymore for the same product but much lower shipping costs and faster service. Overall, I pay less.

I've never used Amazon. My son uses it a lot though.

Again, it used to be the BEST place to shop on the Internet. Find other places for better pricing, shipping and delivery. As an example I use Newegg.com for computer related stuff.

I've heard of new egg. I think my dad shops there sometimes.

I like touching and seeing what I buy.

You have your buying options very limited, therefore. If you know about a product line, product family or investigating a new product altogether, why not use the Internet saving time, gas and money. There is no way a storefront can compete with Internet stores.

I also add: before buying ANYTHING, look around in forums for criticisms about the product of interest. Sometimes you can buy stuff used for a lot less than a new component. As an example I have a Viewsonic 27" LCD computer monitor that I use on one of my workstations. It originally sold for about 1,000 bucks. I purchased it used from a store in Colorado for about 350. It works perfectly and was in perfect condition.

I bought a Amazon Prime Membership for $79 per year, and that fee includes free priority shipping for anything Amazon sells or that is sold by sellers that use Amazon for shipping.

I even buy my Cheerios from Amazon, and save over a dollar a box over the Dollar General Store price, and about a buck and a quarter over the grocery store price. Best of all this includes shipping to my door.

Being a Prime Member also includes free downloads of some movies and tv shows.

All in all,a hell of a bargain.
