(Reuters) - Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made "The Andy Griffith Show" one of American television's most enduring shows, has died at his North Carolina home, television station WITN reported on Tuesday. The television station quoted a longtime friend as saying that the 86-year-old actor died at his home on Roanoke Island. The Dare County Sheriff's dispatcher would say only that an ambulance was called to Griffith's residence but would not comment further. Griffith created another memorable character, the folksy defense lawyer in "Matlock" in the 1980s and '90s, but it was his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor on the "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s that gave him a place in U.S. television history. The show portrayed life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Another socialist propagandist bites the dust. The government recently enlisted aged actor Andy Griffith for a commercial showcasing Medicare benefits available through health care reform. North's Carolina's old people, at least, didn't appreciate these lies, and Griffith's favorability rating has dropped 25 percentage points there. ****************************************************************************** Politico reports that the Obama administration’s pro-Obamacare Andy Griffith TV ad cost taxpayers $3.66 million, according to records obtained from the Department of Health and Human Services. Actually, there were at least three such ads (here, here, and here), so it’s not clear whether this was the cost for one, or for the whole batch. In this ad, Griffith says, “That new health care law sure sounds good for all of us on Medicare!”
Sorry, I'm going to give Andy a pass on that one. The guy was in his 80's when he did that spot, I doubt that he was even aware of what he was reading off the TelePrompter. Even if he was, I'm not going to let that one mis-step keep me from enjoying his massive body of entertainment. And you know what? Even though Andy was a life-long Democrat, at least he had the class not to shove it into anyone's face like Sean Penn or any of the loud-mouthed Hollywood stars now. In addition to his online video with Howard in 2008, in politics Griffith has favored Democrats and recorded television commercials endorsing North Carolina Governors Mike Easley and Bev Perdue. He spoke at the inauguration ceremonies of both. In 1984, he declined an offer by Democratic party officials to run against Jesse Helms, a Republican U.S. Senator from North Carolina. In July 2010, he also starred in advertisements about Medicare
Thaks for the info on Andy. I didn't know his political leanings. As for making the commercial......I believe he was being honorable in promoting what he thought was good for his peers, the seniors of the nation, and not some ulterior evil motive. Just because people have some different values than we do, it does not make them evil necessarily. I think way too many are jaundiced nowadays to thinking that people are evil unless they march lock step with our thoughts and principles.

Didn't you know, rowdee, It's open season in todays age of enlightenment, to rag on anyone we once thought of as good, and decent. No one is safe from filthy smears anymore, rowdee, not the brave pioneer men and women who came and settled these lands, not the wise men (our Founding Fathers) who penned our Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Right, and the U.S. Constitution...no one! In this world we live in today, evil is good, and good is bad, nothing escapes the venomous attacks of this soon to be Godless society, who even dare smear the name of His son, Jesus. I've seen so much trash talk about the things we once thought of with pride and love, our language, our flag, the Statue of Liberty, our National Anthem, our ancestors, our Founders, Christianity, prayers, the Ten Commandments, our heritage and culture.... The more foreigners, with their own heritage and culture, flood this nation and TRASH our world, the more evil, Godless anti-Americans join them. Just look at what todays todays children, todays decendents, have done with the wonderful gifts bestowed upon them, gifts, bought and paid for with blood, sweat and tears of their ancestors. I would love to see the guiltless, saintly halo on any of the heads of those who constantly look for flaws in others, but neglect the dirty little flaws of their own selves...what did they ever achieve that makes them so self- rightious? JMHO!
We lament how society has degenerated and recognize morality has almost completely been lost to the gutter. I think so many are so jaded in outlook that they see no one as having any honor or honorable intentions beyond themselves. I recall many years ago, back in the Clinton days, an interview that Hilary's mother had with some tv interviewer. The words she said really stuck with me, and I've mulled them over countless times in my mind. She sais something along the lines of 'that is the truth as they see it'. PERCEPTION AS THEY SEE IT. We all come at life with a little different perceptive. We all need to realize this as well as realize just because someone isn't a clone of ourself and our values doesn't make them evil or wrong. Instead of berating them incessantly, and namecalling and labeling, we most likely should be looking to see if there is any sort of merit to their position, and try to develop a better argument for our position from there. Resorting to labeling and namecalling proves immaturity, nothing else-- certainly not the winner of a debate on issues. Having a better product will bring more people to the sales counter.
