(Reuters) - Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made "The Andy Griffith Show" one of American television's most enduring shows, has died at his North Carolina home, television station WITN reported on Tuesday.

The television station quoted a longtime friend as saying that the 86-year-old actor died at his home on Roanoke Island. The Dare County Sheriff's dispatcher would say only that an ambulance was called to Griffith's residence but would not comment further.

Griffith created another memorable character, the folksy defense lawyer in "Matlock" in the 1980s and '90s, but it was his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor on the "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s that gave him a place in U.S. television history.

The show portrayed life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina. (1 image)

Another socialist propagandist bites the dust.

The government recently enlisted aged actor Andy Griffith for a commercial showcasing Medicare benefits available through health care reform. North's Carolina's old people, at least, didn't appreciate these lies, and Griffith's favorability rating has dropped 25 percentage points there.

Politico reports that the Obama administration’s pro-Obamacare Andy Griffith TV ad cost taxpayers $3.66 million, according to records obtained from the Department of Health and Human Services. Actually, there were at least three such ads (here, here, and here), so it’s not clear whether this was the cost for one, or for the whole batch. In this ad, Griffith says, “That new health care law sure sounds good for all of us on Medicare!

Sorry, I'm going to give Andy a pass on that one.

The guy was in his 80's when he did that spot, I doubt that he was even aware of what he was reading off the TelePrompter. Even if he was, I'm not going to let that one mis-step keep me from enjoying his massive body of entertainment.

And you know what? Even though Andy was a life-long Democrat, at least he had the class not to shove it into anyone's face like Sean Penn or any of the loud-mouthed Hollywood stars now.

In addition to his online video with Howard in 2008, in politics Griffith has favored Democrats and recorded television commercials endorsing North Carolina Governors Mike Easley and Bev Perdue.

He spoke at the inauguration ceremonies of both.

In 1984, he declined an offer by Democratic party officials to run against Jesse Helms, a Republican U.S. Senator from North Carolina.

In July 2010, he also starred in advertisements about Medicare

Was there evidence that Andy had Alzheimers or became a drug-addled victim of age-related brain damage?

The problem is too many propagandists ARE in their 80s...

One can still respect and admire the body of work of Andy Griffith...yet still disrespect his politics and be reminded that after all, he'd become one more tool of the Hollywood Left.

I agree.

The sheriff he portrayed was likely a conservative, but that doesn't mean the actor was. I think we identify too much with the part, and assume the actor is similar.

At least James Arness was a Republican. Perhaps he was more like the character he played than most. I usually hope so, for some reason.

Yup.

The character Sheriff Taylor was their childhood surrogate daddy or uncle and Opie their surrogate brother, Aunt Bea, the same. THEY WERE ACTORS! Duh.

Calling a spade a spade - that Andy Griffith who was indeed an 0buma-Democrat - is like telling these people there's no Santa.

That's what I've heard. But back then there was less backlash. All you need to know about Charlton Heston is that the Left STILL despises him. Now THERE'S a good man.

LOL! You mean the same Charleton Heston that went on Rosie O'Donnels tv show and agreed with that that "people have no right to own AK-47's",and then went on to say "I hate them"?

The same Charleton Heston that was a friend of MLK Jr,and bragged about being a Freedom Marcher and who was a huge fan of The Civil Wrongs Act of 1964?

The same Charleton Heston that bragged about being "probably the man most responsible for getting a reluctant President to sign the Gun Control Act of 1968 into law"?

THAT Charleton Heston was a good man?

I knew there was a good reason why the Dems and liberals STILL despise Heston....

1) Btw, chyeah - we should hand out AF-47s like M&Ms, eh? Heston was a powerful and impressionable symbol for the NRA and gun ownership and rights; Right AND Left STILL quote his, "out of my cold dead hands." It doesn't matter what your opinion is; It's not like he promoted any of Bubba's or 0buma's legislation. LIKE COMMIE ADVOCATE, ANDY GRIFFITH.

2) Heston marched peaceable and rightfully with MLK for good reason. There were SOME Civil "Rights" that did need to be addressed. Do you deny that?

Later on, the Black Mafia and Left hated Heston, Sherlock. But...but...WHY??

You ignorant slug,Heston didn't even know what a AK-47 was. He thought AKM's were machine guns. AND....,nobody was talking about handing out AK-47's like M&M's,even though those are the very specific type of weapon protected by the 2nd Amendment. To dumb it down to your level,Heston stated publicly that citizens didn't have a RIGHT to own rifles he didn't approve of.

Heston was a powerful and impressionable symbol for the NRA and gun ownership and rights;

A senile old leftist fart who was nothing more than a sock puppet for Wayne LaPierre. He actually WAS a fitting symbol for the NRA. All image and no reality.

Right AND Left STILL quote his, "out of my cold dead hands."

Unless it was a "ugly rifle" or a non-target handgun. Then it would never have been in his hands,so he didn't give a damn. All he really cared about were antique muskets, and skeet and trap guns, anyhow.

You DID read the part about him bragging about probably being the man most responsible for the Gun Control Act of 1968 being signed into law, right?

It doesn't matter what your opinion is; It's not like he promoted any of Bubba's or 0buma's legislation. LIKE COMMIE ADVOCATE, ANDY GRIFFITH.

You really are a complete fool, aren't you? Your ignorance is stunning. Heston was to the LEFT of Bill Clinton and bragged about it.

Then again, you operate off image, not facts. It's the legend that is important to you.

2) Heston marched peaceable and rightfully with MLK for good reason.

ROFLMAO!

There were SOME Civil "Rights" that did need to be addressed. Do you deny that?

You mean like homosexuals having the right to marry?

Careful Pete, one could turn that around on you.

Can't we all just be allowed our opinions without others freaking out?

Me? If Obama had died on the same day as Andy, I'd consider it a twofer and call it a national holiday.
