(Reuters) - Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made "The Andy Griffith Show" one of American television's most enduring shows, has died at his North Carolina home, television station WITN reported on Tuesday.

The television station quoted a longtime friend as saying that the 86-year-old actor died at his home on Roanoke Island. The Dare County Sheriff's dispatcher would say only that an ambulance was called to Griffith's residence but would not comment further.

Griffith created another memorable character, the folksy defense lawyer in "Matlock" in the 1980s and '90s, but it was his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor on the "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s that gave him a place in U.S. television history.

The show portrayed life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina. (1 image)

The sheriff he portrayed was likely a conservative, but that doesn't mean the actor was. I think we identify too much with the part, and assume the actor is similar.

Yup.

The character Sheriff Taylor was their childhood surrogate daddy or uncle and Opie their surrogate brother, Aunt Bea, the same. THEY WERE ACTORS! Duh.

Calling a spade a spade - that Andy Griffith who was indeed an 0buma-Democrat - is like telling these people there's no Santa.

At least James Arness was a Republican. Perhaps he was more like the character he played than most. I usually hope so, for some reason.

That's what I've heard. But back then there was less backlash. All you need to know about Charlton Heston is that the Left STILL despises him. Now THERE'S a good man.

Get a grip, will ya??

You think helping olde people with NO money except for their home equity is necessarily a bad thing??

They have an opportunity to live in their house WHILE pulling out a monthly check via Reverse Mortgage. That's SPENDABLE INCOME which means they might not have to eat cat food that week. Not that YOU give a dog-crap.

And yet you have the unmitigated gall to compare THAT endorsement to Andy Griffith playing on the trust of his "Andy" character *portrayal* promoting 0bumacare?? Pfft.

I knew there was a good reason why the Dems and liberals STILL despise Heston....

1) Btw, chyeah - we should hand out AF-47s like M&Ms, eh? Heston was a powerful and impressionable symbol for the NRA and gun ownership and rights; Right AND Left STILL quote his, "out of my cold dead hands." It doesn't matter what your opinion is; It's not like he promoted any of Bubba's or 0buma's legislation. LIKE COMMIE ADVOCATE, ANDY GRIFFITH.

2) Heston marched peaceable and rightfully with MLK for good reason. There were SOME Civil "Rights" that did need to be addressed. Do you deny that?

Later on, the Black Mafia and Left hated Heston, Sherlock. But...but...WHY??

1) Btw, chyeah - we should hand out AF-47s like M&Ms, eh?

You ignorant slug,Heston didn't even know what a AK-47 was. He thought AKM's were machine guns. AND....,nobody was talking about handing out AK-47's like M&M's,even though those are the very specific type of weapon protected by the 2nd Amendment. To dumb it down to your level,Heston stated publicly that citizens didn't have a RIGHT to own rifles he didn't approve of.

Heston was a powerful and impressionable symbol for the NRA and gun ownership and rights;

A senile old leftist fart who was nothing more than a sock puppet for Wayne LaPierre. He actually WAS a fitting symbol for the NRA. All image and no reality.

Right AND Left STILL quote his, "out of my cold dead hands."

Unless it was a "ugly rifle" or a non-target handgun. Then it would never have been in his hands,so he didn't give a damn. All he really cared about were antique muskets, and skeet and trap guns, anyhow.

You DID read the part about him bragging about probably being the man most responsible for the Gun Control Act of 1968 being signed into law, right?

It doesn't matter what your opinion is; It's not like he promoted any of Bubba's or 0buma's legislation. LIKE COMMIE ADVOCATE, ANDY GRIFFITH.

You really are a complete fool, aren't you? Your ignorance is stunning. Heston was to the LEFT of Bill Clinton and bragged about it.

Then again, you operate off image, not facts. It's the legend that is important to you.

2) Heston marched peaceable and rightfully with MLK for good reason.

Who ever said he wasn't?

That doesn't mean his political views weren't based on being a Patriotic American. They were based on the values he grew up with and still held.

He also put his money were his mouth was by going in his own pocket to create a band at a rural high school. He not only bought all the instruments,he even paid the music teacher's salary the first year. This was back in the 60's.

More recently he bought all the computers and software to create a computer lab and class at a high school.

LMAO!!!

"Most people prefer to believe that their leaders are just and fair, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which he lives is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one's self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all." As for making the commercial......I believe he was being honorable in promoting what he thought was good for his peers, the seniors of the nation, and not some ulterior evil motive.

Just because people have some different values than we do, it does not make them evil necessarily. I think way too many are jaundiced nowadays to thinking that people are evil unless they march lock step with our thoughts and principles.

I read that and started smiling big time as memories flooded back. This is sooooo true.

My maternal grandfather was a democrat, but he hated LBJ's guts with a bloody passion!

If anyone dared called my Grandpa a commie or a socialist to his face, he'd have kicked their arse down the street a couple of blocks and then used their mop of hair to sweep up all the mess!

Grandpa was a southern democrat, as was his Daddy.......and being southerners, they hated Lincoln, the Republican. That, and how businessmen treated employees back in their day is what made my ancestors democrats, I'm sure.

I'm still amazed that just my oldest brother and I are/were Republicans, and I've been an independent for a long time now.

Sneaky, Liberator isn't the only person in America that seemingly doesn't know, or understand this about the parties and how they have 'switched' description over the years.

I only came to this realization about 20 years ago after reading an article about the parties and then making a 'connection' as I was working on genealogy where most of my ancestors are southerners.

I was told by one of the gals I was searching with that she had been at a genealogy library in Texas trying to locate a book in the hopes of finding a really difficult person to locate in Arkansas.

An elderly gentleman was standing by the counter listening. When she had said this, he told her that his daddy had told him that when the feds came around, the hill and holler peoples hid out as they wanted nothing to do with them government people.

This is understandable considering how the southerners were treated after the civil war was over. It explains why so many people left the south and moved westward to get away from the tyranny being forced upon them by the federal government for trying to break away from the union they had helped form.

I believe he was being honorable in promoting what he thought was good for his peers, the seniors of the nation, and not some ulterior evil motive.

Just because people have some different values than we do, it does not make them evil necessarily. I think way too many are jaundiced nowadays to thinking that people are evil unless they march lock step with our thoughts and principles.

God Bless you, rowdee!

Didn't you know, rowdee, It's open season in todays age of enlightenment, to rag on anyone we once thought of as good, and decent. No one is safe from filthy smears anymore, rowdee, not the brave pioneer men and women who came and settled these lands, not the wise men (our Founding Fathers) who penned our Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Right, and the U.S. Constitution...no one!

In this world we live in today, evil is good, and good is bad, nothing escapes the venomous attacks of this soon to be Godless society, who even dare smear the name of His son, Jesus.

I've seen so much trash talk about the things we once thought of with pride and love, our language, our flag, the Statue of Liberty, our National Anthem, our ancestors, our Founders, Christianity, prayers, the Ten Commandments, our heritage and culture....

The more foreigners, with their own heritage and culture, flood this nation and TRASH our world, the more evil, Godless anti-Americans join them.

Just look at what todays todays children, todays decendents, have done with the wonderful gifts bestowed upon them, gifts, bought and paid for with blood, sweat and tears of their ancestors.

I would love to see the guiltless, saintly halo on any of the heads of those who constantly look for flaws in others, but neglect the dirty little flaws of their own selves...what did they ever achieve that makes them so self- rightious? JMHO!

We lament how society has degenerated and recognize morality has almost completely been lost to the gutter. I think so many are so jaded in outlook that they see no one as having any honor or honorable intentions beyond themselves.

I recall many years ago, back in the Clinton days, an interview that Hilary's mother had with some tv interviewer. The words she said really stuck with me, and I've mulled them over countless times in my mind.

She sais something along the lines of 'that is the truth as they see it'. PERCEPTION AS THEY SEE IT.

We all come at life with a little different perceptive. We all need to realize this as well as realize just because someone isn't a clone of ourself and our values doesn't make them evil or wrong. Instead of berating them incessantly, and namecalling and labeling, we most likely should be looking to see if there is any sort of merit to their position, and try to develop a better argument for our position from there.

Resorting to labeling and namecalling proves immaturity, nothing else-- certainly not the winner of a debate on issues.

I don't recall that he was ever in negative publicity, i.e., out drunk somewhere, or sleeping around, or acting like the immature crowd in Hollywood that think they are something great.

The closest thing I have ever heard of any "dirt" being attached to him was his son was a drug addict that died when he was in his middle or late 30's from a drug OD.

Which I see as more of a reason to have sympathy for him that ridicule. He was in no way responsible for what his 30+ year old son did.

.and being southerners, they hated Lincoln, the Republican. That, and how businessmen treated employees back in their day is what made my ancestors democrats, I'm sure.

And there you have it. Both reasons are why I started out as a Democrat myself.

LBJ and Jim-mah Carter convinced me I wasn't a Democrat, and the Bush Crime Family convinced me I wasn't a Republican.

Yup. A lot of them went west because they had nothing left at home after the carpetbaggers got through. A lot of people don't know the history of this because they were taught in school that "Mr Lincoln" insisted the southerners be treated decenty."

Nothing could be further from the truth. They came in and appointed their friends and relatives as state and county officials, and even appointed congressmen and senators that hated the south. The worse part from the POV of most people were the yankee carpetbaggers appointed as local judges, tax collectors, and sheriff's. A awful lot of land and other property was lost due to the tax collectors immediately assigning back taxes and penalties on property and demanding immediate payment. Since they also owned the banks, there was no chance of the land owners borrowing the money, and after having been away for 4 yeas fighting a war, they had no cash money. The tax collector would put the land up for sale at the court house door, and then decide who was allowed to bid and who wasn't. LOTS of property went for a small percentage of what it was worth, and the poor former property owner was still being held responsible for the balance. They had no choice but to move if they ever wanted to live free again.

And we must not forget the 'scorched earth' policy Grant pursued.
