Title: Obama, Romney react to SCOTUS ruling striking down provisions of Arizona immigration law

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down key portions of Arizona's controversial immigration law Monday morning, though it upheld a provision allowing police to check suspects' immigration status. Read the AP story here.

The decision prompted statements from President Barack Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Read their reactions after the jump.

From Obama:

I am pleased that the Supreme Court has struck down key provisions of Arizona's immigration law. What this decision makes unmistakably clear is that Congress must act on comprehensive immigration reform. A patchwork  of state laws is not a solution to our broken immigration system – it’s part of the problem.

At the same time, I remain concerned about the practical impact of the remaining provision of the Arizona law that requires local law enforcement officials to check the immigration status of anyone they even suspect to be here illegally. I agree with the Court that individuals cannot be detained solely to verify their immigration status. No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like. Going forward, we must ensure that Arizona law enforcement officials do not enforce this law in a manner that undermines the civil rights of Americans, as the Court’s decision recognizes. Furthermore, we will continue to enforce our immigration laws by focusing on our most important priorities like border security and criminals who endanger our communities, and not, for example, students who earn their education – which is why the Department of Homeland Security announced earlier this month that it will lift the shadow of deportation from young people who were brought to the United States as children through no fault of their own.

I will work with anyone in Congress who’s willing to make progress on comprehensive immigration reform that addresses our economic needs and security needs, and upholds our tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. And in the meantime, we will continue to use every federal resource to protect the safety and civil rights of all Americans, and treat all our people with dignity and respect. We can solve these challenges not in spite of our most cherished values – but because of them. What makes us American is not a question of what we look like or what our names are. What makes us American is our shared belief in the enduring promise of this country – and our shared responsibility to leave it more generous and more hopeful than we found it.

From Romney:

Today's decision underscores the need for a President who will lead on this critical issue and work in a bipartisan fashion to pursue a national immigration strategy. President Obama has failed to provide any leadership on immigration. This represents yet another broken promise by this President.

I believe that each state has the duty--and the right--to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities. As Candidate Obama, he promised to present an immigration plan during his first year in office.  But 4 years later, we are still waiting.

broken immigration system = broken presidents unwilling to obey the law

The Arizona law has nothing to do with immigration, as it only applies to illegal alien invaders. Both wings of the D&R party like to pretend that it's about immigration. It's about enforcing the law, which requires that illegal aliens be deported. Ike Eisenhower was the last president who actually enforced immigration law. Since then all presidents have been scofflaws. Subscribe to *The Two Parties ARE the Same*

At least Romney is still talking about the rule of law and securing the border. And the states' rights to do so.

That's heads above what pro-amnesty Obama is doing and saying.

I would give ANYTHING, to be able to get in your ugly face and tell you what a damn two-bit tin horned, dictating traitor you are to the REAL American people.

Illegal aliens who cross our borders without going through the process of our immigration laws ARE NOT Americans! Once here, they are not citizens, but leeches, squatters, theives, sucking the very life out of every man and woman who did come here legally, or who were born here.

You talk as if these illegal rodents deserve more respect and consideration than our children and families who are stripped, molested and manhandled at our airports, bull shit!

Where the HELL do you get off dictating these criminals should not abide by the same laws set down for working Americans, whos families have been here from the birth of this nation?

Many, youself included, like to keep reminding us that this is a nation of 'immigrants', and that would have been true...over one hudred years ago, but this has become our home since then, we are the decendents of 'immigrants', we are no longer immigrants, but Americans who were here first.

I, like tens of millions of citizens who are expected to obey our laws, DEMAND the same for anyone who sets foot upon our soil. Why the hell would any president allow foreigners carte blance treatement by our law enforcement, but at the same time, shake down innocent families who have broken no laws, but you demand they prove they are not 'terrorist', then proceed to torment, molest and terrorize them?

Americans ARE living under a cloud of suspicion, you marxist pig, and before someone like you demand we verifly who we are, set an example, chump, and verifly who the hell you are, ommiting the lies, of course.

This is a nation that welcomes 'immigration', but first, and foremost, we are a Nation of Americans, this is Our Home, and we have everyright to verify the ID's of ANYONE who comes into our home, especially if they came here by illegal means. JMHO!

Pretty much. Neither wants to address the FACT that illegal aliens are NOT immigrants. They are criminals.

IMHO,Obama is nothing more than Bush 4.0,and Rombama would/will be Bush 5.0.

That that any of them are in any way "improved" versions of that old treasonous bastard Poppy, though. They are just fresher versions of the original treasonous bastard.

As far as that goes,Poppy was nothing but a presidential version of his Senatorial Nazi-loving bastard of a father,Prescott Sr.,and his older brother Prescott Jr,who was a Chinese fascist loving bastard.

If he had been told to do so,yes.

If left to his own devices,he would have probably nominated somebody from Court TV.

People like to think this crap is new,but Joe Kennedy lost his Ambassadorship to the Court of St.James (England)because Churchill had proof he was giving Allied secrets to the IRA to pass on to the Nazis.

And Prescott Bush Sr was convicted of trading with the enemy during war time by laundering money for the Nazi's while we were still fighting WW-2,and he ends up getting elected to a US Senate seat in 1954.

Just how much did any of this damage the political careers of their off-sprungs?
