Julian Assange, who has taken refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, recently interviewed the country's president Rafael Correa for his television show on Russia Today, it has emerged.
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks website, is currently staying at the Ecuadorean embassy in London in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.
Mr Assange appeared to find a kindred spirit in the President of Ecuador when he interviewed him for his talk show on Russia Today, an English language channel bankrolled by the Russian government.
During the 75-minute television interview recorded in April, President Correa praised Wikileaks, the anti-secrecy website set up by Assange which notoriously leaked thousands of US diplomatic cables.
The pair also shared their views on the media and freedom of speech and appeared to have bonded by the end of the show.
As the pair signed off their Skype interview, President Correa said to Mr Assange: "Cheer up! Cheer up! Welcome to the club of the persecuted!".
