Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has kept a shocking family abortion secret from his pro-life supporters! The White House hopeful was left devastated when a beloved relative died after undergoing a botched backstreet abortion The National Enquirer exclusively learned. Ann Keenan, the younger sister of Romney’s brother-in-law, died at age 21 after contracting a fatal infection following an illegal abortion in 1963, and political insiders say the tragedy had a profound effect on the future politician. There’s a very real concern in his camp that he could be pushed into a corner over this.” The 65-year-old candidate’s campaign has refused to identify Ann, who was from Detroit, Mich. Her older brother Loren married Romney’s elder sister Margo Lynn in the late 1950s. They're serious that the donations establish equality of support between the two candidates when, in fact, one candidate getting 5 times as much money as the other from Wall Street fatcat bankers seems like a "significant difference" to me. You know what's going on with public education these days - even most private education. If a math teacher asks a student the difference between $3.6M and $810K, it's just too hard to figure out. Zero is always the default answer.
Innumeracy is a terrible problem in this country. It spills over into everything. If 30% of the population seems to have problems grasping the difference between millions/billions/trillions, news reporting and discussion and analysis of state and federal budgets, understanding the economy in general, or Wall Street sails right past them. They aren't stupid, just poorly educated. So you end up having elections about stupid things, usually involving people's feelings and partisan hackery, not the facts in any given matter.
