The killing of Trayvon Martin was “ultimately avoidable” if George Zimmerman had just stayed in his vehicle instead of pursuing the unarmed teen, Florida police investigators concluded in one of a series of reports on the case released late Thursday. Instead, the Sanford Police Department investigators wrote, Zimmerman confronted the teen, ended up in a struggle and eventually shot him in the chest. In the end, Martin was dead and police were recommending the neighborhood watchman be brought up on a criminal charge of manslaughter. The conclusions came to light on Thursday as part of a huge release of evidence by the Florida prosecutors who later performed their own investigation and charged Zimmerman with the more serious crime of second-degree murder. Totaling 183 pages, the heavily redacted documents include police narratives, witness interviews, autopsy reports and photos of Zimmerman bloodied after the Feb. 26 struggle. “The encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was ultimately avoidable by Zimmerman,” the report said, “if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement, or conversely if he had identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and initiated dialogue in an effort to dispel each party’s concern. There is no indication that Trayvon Martin was involved in any criminal activity at the time of the encounter.” The documents [PDF] were obtained by several news outlets, including NBC News, which put them online Thursday. The investigators’ conclusions were in a document dated March 13. Zimmerman wasn’t charged until April 11 after special prosecutor Angela Corey was assigned to the case by Florida Gov. Rick Scott. By then, the killing was already the focus of international attention and outrage. Previously, Zimmerman has said he believed the teen looked “suspicious” as he crossed through the gated neighborhood in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman called 911 at the time but ignored the requests of a police dispatcher who told him not to pursue the teen. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge, claiming he acted in self defense, saying Martin attacked him first and he had to shoot him to save his own life.

Virtually every death not caused by old age or disease is "ultimately avoidable". Every car accident is avoidable if the victim(s) weren't driving. And so on. What a big nothing. Avoidable shit happens everyday in our lives, we roll the dice and take our chances, who's to say Martin would not have been eating hot lead if the cops had been called out (if they showed at all)? The cops in New Yawk were called out to look into the (so called) suspicious activities of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed African immigrant, in the lobby of his own appartment building, those trigger happy bastards let loose with a fusillade of 41 bullets, but only 19 shots hit their target. I can only imagine how many times the cops would have reloaded if Diallo had actucally punched one of them and slammed their heads on the sidewalk.... FK the cops, their just a bunch of retarded neanderthals who couldn't take out a 5 lb chihuahua without backup. jmho!

Bull. The cops came across Diallo standing in front of his building and *thought* that he matched the description of what turned out to be a non-existent serial rapist. Their dynamic assault - screeching tires, jumping out of the car guns pulled, scared Diallo so badly that he ran up the steps to his building, stopped on command, and turned while getting his wallet...meanwhile, when Cowboy #1 reached the top of the steps he slipped and fell and Cowboys 2, 3 and 4, believing he had been shot, opened fire. An NYPD investigation determined that it was okay to kill someone if one of the cops slips and falls while the person is getting his wallet.

And if you're referring to george Zimmerman...he did not have a factured skull and his *broken* nose is actually a common deformation...his septum was slightly displaced...which it could have been prior...

How do you know he confronted him aggressively? We don't know that Z confronted him aggressively. He could have been totally polite about it. but he can't expect any legal protection for doing so... I don't know. I guess we'll see.
There is an earwitness to the confrontation and we know from the 911 tape that he was fairly agitated and we know from witness statememts that people were heard yelling. One witness reported two men wrestling by his back porch. This asshole stays in his truck and everyone goes home happy. And, btw, the Zimmerman camp states that there were no words exchanged and that Trayvon *jumped* and threatened his shooter.

Once all the evidence is presented, if Zimmerman is convicted, I won't have a problem with it. I just hate the Nancy Graceing of a person who hasn't been convicted and is still presumed innocent. There isn't. We know that "(going) to talk to him" isn't why he got out of his truck. What we do know is that he didn't want Trayvon to get away and so he started chasing after him. My money says that he probably had his gun drawn, btw...that's the basis for an assault, btw. We must be reading about two different cases. I have four children who used to routinely walk places. Some of them wore hoodies when doing so. This kid was doing nothing more than walking home with Skittles for his little brother when Paulito Blart once again tried to assume his role of hero. It would not surprise me if a lot of the Sanford cops considered this guy the neighborhood joke. I do go back and forth on whether or not Zimmerman had the depraved indifference necessary to justify a 2nd degree murder conviction. The homicide was most certainly avoidable therefore unjustifiable to a minimal point of manslaughter.

He wasn't shot because he was walking. He was shot because he was attacking. What about the broken nose and scalp lacerations? Those are absolute evidence. Is that Zimmerman's fault because he got out to talk to a guy? If you walked up to me and asked me what I was doing, and that pissed me off to the point where I attacked you, broke your nose and caused lacerations in your scalp, do you have the right to self defense or not? The answer is yes, you do. If there is any reasonable doubt whatsoever, Zimmerman should walk, and I believe he will.

His broken nose could have been an existing deviated septum and the "lacerations" were described as minor cuts with minor bleeding. I've seen the pics. I've done worse TO myself shaving. If you walked up to me and asked me what I was doing, Feel free to link me to any evidence that the shooter *walked up* to Trayvon an said, "Excuse me sir...may I ask what you are doing here?" I've done silhouette ranges where you had to practice target discrimination. In order to get to the quickest and most accurate score where you hit the targets of innocent people less or not at all, one has to deal with any lingering resentments to not let personal feelings make you react in a way you ultimately will regret. He would not have been so fast to shoot if it had been a white or Hispanic kid on him. In fact, he would of probably either left them alone in the first place if that were so, or handle the situation of confronting them much better. This guy reacted wrongly in the heat of the moment as well as got himself in a situation he is the main instigator of. Unfortunately for him, he was pushing the teenager who reacted to his personal envelope being breached by someone with an obvious attitude and negative assumptions about him. If he had left the kid to his phone chat with his girlfriend be, none of this would of happened. Having gotten himself in that mess. he should of had enough insight to see that and not be so fast to use deadly force.

Zimmerman was a serial 911 caller who routinely targeted black youths as he *patrolled*...given that he was licensed, this wasn't an accident...it was an inevitability... Everything that happened that night was set into motion by him. The kid was just walking home.
