Trayvon Martin's autopsy shows evidence of marijuana in his urine and blood.

The autopsy was among a large amount of evidence released by prosecutors on Thursday as part of the second-degree murder case against the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot him in February.

Other documents include a photograph that shows suspect George Zimmerman with a bloody nose. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because the unarmed teenager attacked him. He has pleaded not guilty.

A police report says Martin had $40.15, Skittles candy, a red lighter, headphones and a photo pin in his pocket. He had been shot once in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsy: Drug THC found in Trayvon Martin's system

George Zimmerman claimed he was assaulted by Trayvon Martin before fatally shooting the teen earlier this year, police said.

(CNN) -- Trayvon Martin had drugs in his system when he was fatally shot earlier this year by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, according to autopsy results released Thursday.

Martin's blood contained THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, according to an autopsy conducted February 27 -- the day after the teenager was shot dead.

Toxicology tests found elements of the drug in the teenager's chest blood -- 1.5 nanograms per milliliter of one type (THC), as well as 7.3 nanograms of another type (THC-COOH) -- according to the medical examiner's report. There was also a presumed positive test of cannabinoids in Martin's urine. It was not immediately clear how significant these amounts were.

Concentrations of THC routinely rise to 100 to 200 ng/ml after marijuana use, though it typically falls to below 5 ng/ml within three hours of it being smoked, according to information on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website.

While some states have zero-tolerance policies for any drug traces for driving while impaired, others set certain benchmarks, the website of California's Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs notes. In Nevada, that equates to 2 ng/ml for THC and 5 ng/ml for THC-COOH -- also known as marijuana metabolite. The cutoff level in Ohio is 2 ng/ml for THC and 50 ng/ml for THC-COOH.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist who hosts a show on CNN's sister network HLN, downplayed the findings about the THC blood levels, noting the drug can stay in a person's system for hours, even days.

According to the medical examiner's report, which was one of several documents on the case released Thursday by the office of special prosecutor Angela Corey, Martin died from a gunshot wounded to chest fired from "intermediate range" -- within 36 inches.

The autopsy report lists the manner of death as a homicide.

Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second-degree murder for killing Martin in the Sanford neighborhood where the African-American teen was staying.

Prior to the shooting, Zimmerman had called 911 to complain about a suspicious person in the neighborhood, according to authorities.

In the call, Zimmerman said he was following Martin after the teen started to run, prompting the dispatcher to tell him, "We don't need you to do that."

Zimmerman apparently disregarded that advice.

Much has been made about whether Zimmerman during that call used a racial epithet in referring to Martin. But an FBI analysis, released Thursday, determined that the word could not be definitively identified "due to weak signal level and poor recording quality."

A screaming voice could be heard on other 911 calls placed by neighbors, with some speculating those screams came from Martin and others that they belonged to Zimmerman. The FBI did not make a final determination either way, citing several reasons including the fact they came during "an extreme emotional state," there weren't enough words to make a good comparison and the sound quality was low and distant.

FBI analysis -- Zimmerman's 911 call

Zimmerman claimed, according a police report released earlier, that he'd been "assaulted (by Martin) and his head was struck on the pavement."

According a report from the Sanford Fire Department, released Thursday, Zimmerman had "abrasions to his forehead," "bleeding/tenderness to his nose," and a "small laceration to the back of his head" when he was treated at the scene.

Prosecutors have said Zimmerman, who is a white Hispanic, killed the unarmed teenager unjustly after profiling him. Zimmerman, who has pleaded not guilty, has said that he shot Martin in self-defense.

The start of the trial hasn't been set.

The case put a spotlight on race relations, spurring protests nationwide and drawing prominent civil rights leaders to central Florida denouncing the actions of Sanford police and calling for Zimmerman's arrest. Special prosecutor Angela Corey announced he'd been charged on April 11, weeks after Sanford police initially declined to do so.

It also raised questions about gun laws, as well as the merits of the "Stand Your Ground" law in Florida, and similar laws in other states that allow people to use deadly force anywhere they feel a reasonable threat of serious injury or death.

A few tokes over the line by Nevada standards. The legal limit is 5, and TrayBong was 7.3 for THC-COOH.

The start of the trial hasn't been set.

Aug 8 for a hearing !

Trial will be after the elections !

Probably a few hours - days before the judge will dismiss it !

The evidence pretty much proves self defense !

George Zimmerman was 'bleeding from the nose and head'

A Florida neighbourhood watch volunteer who shot an unarmed black teenager had a bloody nose and a cut on his head, according to police reports.

The documents were released to defence lawyers for George Zimmerman, who is accused of second-degree murder over the 26 February killing in Sanford.

The file includes autopsy evidence that traces of a cannabis ingredient were found in Trayvon Martin's system.

Mr Zimmerman, 28, maintains he shot the 17-year-old in self-defence.

He was not arrested for several weeks after the shooting because he invoked Florida's "stand your ground" law, which allows deadly force in the face of a serious threat.

The racially charged case, which sparked nationwide protests, has divided the US. 'Fistfight'

Police tried without success to revive Trayvon Martin after finding him face down in the grass with a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to the police reports.

Several officers who arrived at the scene noted that Mr Zimmerman had injuries.

The documents include photos showing what seems to be a bleeding wound on Mr Zimmerman's head

Officer Timothy Smith said: "I could observe that [Mr Zimmerman's] back appeared to be wet and he was covered in grass, as if he had been laying on his back on the ground. Zimmerman was also bleeding from the nose and the back of the head."

Another officer, Jonathan Mead, said in his report that the neighbourhood watchman "appeared to have a broken and bloody nose and swelling of his face".

A medical assessment found a 1-in laceration to the back of Mr Zimmerman's head.

"All injuries have minor bleeding," wrote paramedic Michael Brandy.

The report includes a number of witness statements, including one from a resident who said she saw two men chasing each other, followed by a fistfight. Then she heard a gunshot.

Another resident told police he saw "the black male mounted on the white or Hispanic male and throwing punches 'MMA (mixed martial arts style)'".

The resident said he shouted to the struggling pair that he was going to call the police, before he heard the "pop" of a gunshot.

Another resident is quoted by police as saying: "I opened door and saw a guy on the ground getting hit by another man on top of him… (guy getting hit on ground was wearing red [a presumed reference to Mr Zimmerman] calling out for help)". 'Ultimately avoidable'

The file notes that Mr Zimmerman had previously called police several times to report "suspicious persons, all young black males" in the neighbourhood.

Also included in the documents released on Thursday was a statement from investigator Christopher Serino, who recommended Mr Zimmerman be charged.

He told prosecutors in March that the fight was "ultimately avoidable" if Mr Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and waited for police to arrive.

Police interviews with acquaintances of the neighbourhood watchman include an unidentified woman who said she avoided Mr Zimmerman.

According to the Associated Press news agency, the woman said: "I know George, and I know that he does not like black people. He would start something. He's very confrontational. It's in his blood. We'll just say that."

The documents also confirm previous media reports that Trayvon Martin was visiting Sanford because he had been suspended from his Miami high school for cannabis possession.

Medical examiners found THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, in the teenager's blood and urine, according to an post-mortem report among the tranche of documents released on Thursday. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18111988
