Massachusetts senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren described herself in law-school professional directories as a Native American minority from 1986 to 1995. The white Democratic candidate has so far offered no evidence that she is, in fact, part Native American, suggesting that she may have falsified that ethnic credential to advance her academic career in the early affirmative-action era. But “it is true,” a Warren spokeswoman told The Daily Caller on Monday, “and we’re working on digging up some sort of evidence to appease you.” Another Warren spokeswoman shot back at the campaign of incumbent Republican Sen. Scott Brown, whom Warren is challenging for the senate seat once held by the late Ted Kennedy. “If Scott Brown has questions about Elizabeth Warren’s well-known qualifications — from her high marks as a teacher to her nationally recognized work on bankruptcy and the pressures on middle class families – he ought to ask them directly instead of hiding behind the nasty insinuations of his campaign and trying to score political points,” spokeswoman Mindy Myers said in a statement. Harvard University’s decision to promote Warren as a minority faculty member brought the issue front-and-center, but the Boston Herald reported Monday that Warren described herself that way when she taught at the University of Texas and the University of Pennsylvania. American law school directories listed Warren as a minority professor for nine years before Harvard scooped her up, and Harvard apparently used that information to promote her as a minority, the Herald first reported Friday. Warren’s campaign claims she did not know Harvard was promoting her as its law school’s only Native American professor and one of only a handful of “minority” faculty members. She does have Native American blood, the campaign said, but didn’t use that to get her job at Harvard. “The simple fact is that Elizabeth is proud of her heritage,” Warren spokeswoman Alethea Harney said. In a statement Friday, Brown’s campaign manager said she should apologize. On Monday the campaign told the Herald that Warren should “come clean” about falsely claiming to be a minority. Campaign manager Jim Barnett said that Warren allowed Harvard to conduct a “diversity sham.” “For years, Harvard has claimed special minority status for Professor Elizabeth Warren as a member of a Native American tribe and their first minority hire,” Barnett said. “That Warren allowed Harvard to hold her up as an example of their commitment to diversity in the hiring of historically disadvantaged communities is an insult to all Americans who have suffered real discrimination and mistreatment, and Warren should apologize for participating in this hypocritical sham.” Warren’s campaign has yet to say when it will release the evidence it claims to have to support Warren’s contention that she is part Native American. The campaign also has not responded to TheDC’s question about how much Native American blood she has, or how much is the minimum required before she could legitimately claim that heritage. If you had read the article you'd know that affirmative action (discrimination) moved her up the ladder faster for being a "native American", than other folks (whitey). If she's fake then she's taking positions that genuine Native Americans should have had, according to affirmative action discrimination legislation.

Truth to tell, during the war Mr. Felstein ran the cigar store next to his father in law's deli and he had a big wooden indian with his arm stretched out toward Yankee Stadium and I never understood why someone was always putting a stick on his middle finger until many years later. I just remember Mr. Felstein was always out there having to paint the broken finger.

I've been going through the 1940 census and having a wonderful time even to the extent that my mother refused to give the income amount and the canvasser spelled my name wrong. It was most fun to go down the streets and see the names of long lost friends and many memories have flooded back. I just wish my brothers were still alive to see it since their history goes back to the 1930 Census and so many more of their friends are there and still in the 1940 Census as married, living on the same street as their parents or close by. Washington Heights was a real melting pot. And yes of course I eventually tried out McSorley's...and probably every other pub in the East Village including Dirty Julius's (name from the quaint fact that the grease was never cleaned off the overhead fans) and trying more than once to go uptown and stop at every pub. We never got past Union Square and that was with half the French Fleet in tow. That was of course after the war.

Sarah Smith, who is listed on an Oklahoma marriage certificate as Cherokee. Smith is an ancestor on Warren’s mother’s side, Child said. The missing link comes after Warren’s embattled campaign faced sharp questions about her Native American background in the wake of Herald stories that showed both Harvard Law School and Warren herself had touted her tribal lineage and claimed she was a member of a minority for years. Warren’s shaken campaign faced another crisis yesterday when it was revealed that beginning in 1986 and continuing through 1995, Warren had listed herself as a minority professor in the Association of American Law Schools desk book, a directory of law professors from participating schools. Child — who originally could find no Native American lineage in Warren’s family when the Herald broke the story last Friday — said he uncovered a marriage certificate at 4 p.m. yesterday after fielding calls from countless media outlets and even Warren’s own campaign. Child said he plans on further verifying the records today. “There is a possibility that their Native American ancestry could have been hidden at one point,” he said. The campaign also hastily produced an undated newspaper clip last night from the Muskogee Sunday Phoenix detailing a “Mrs. James P. Rowsey” — who they said is Warren’s cousin — and her involvement with the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, which is dedicated to preserving Native American art. “Mrs. James P. Rowsey was Elizabeth’s first cousin — shared the grandparents in question,” a campaign official said in the statement. Meanwhile, Warren’s camp issued statements from five faculty members at the four universities where she’s taught, including Harvard Law School and University of Pennsylvania, to knock down any suggestion she used her Native American background to get hired. “To suggest that she needed some special advantage to be hired here or anywhere is just silly. She was hired for her great abilities as a teacher and a scholar. Her family tree had nothing to do with it,” wrote Jay Westbrook, chairman of the business law school at the University of Texas at Austin, who hired Warren. Suzan Shown Harjo, a former executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, expressed outrage yesterday after learning that Warren had identified herself as a Native American on law school records without documentation. “If you believe you are these things then that’s fine and dandy, but that doesn’t give you the right to claim yourself as Native American,” said Harjo, who said Warren might have taken a job another Native American could have received.
