No doubt about it, the November 7 elections took some of the luster off the Thanksgiving holiday. The day would have been worthier of thanks if about 50 more Republicans had prevailed in the U.S. House, and 10 or so more had done likewise in the U.S. Senate. Still, all is not lost. This is still America--at least until the first week in January when the Democrats take over. Moreover, there are a few scraps of good news for conservatives to celebrate including: * Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) has been retired to the dustbin of political folly. * Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee will not be a U.S. Senator—at least for awhile. * Arnold Specter (R-PA) will no longer be Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Do not ask who the new chair will be. * Voters in Arizona continued to show common sense and guts with respect to illegal immigration and the American language. * In one of her first acts as Speaker-elect, Nancy Pelosi “drained the swamp” and found Jack Murtha and Alcee Hastings. If nothing else, Pelosi should be good for laughs over the next two years. * Democrats failed to remove Republican-light Arnold Schwarzenegger from the governor’s mansion in California. * Voters in several states said no to same-sex marriage. * Keith Ellison became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress. His votes on homeland security issues should confirm the weak-on- terrorism bond between Muslims and the Democrat party. * Barbara Boxer did not win—she was not up for reelection, but this is still good! * Nancy Pelosi’s mother did not have twin daughters 66 years ago. One final bright spot: With the likes of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi in charge, Republicans should easily return to power in 2008 and, in the process, send Hillary Clinton into early retirement.
