Title: Obama Administration Pulls Rule On Child Farm Labor

(Reuters) - An Obama administration proposal to restrict child labor on farms has been withdrawn after criticism from agricultural groups.

The rules, which were supported by child labor advocates, would have banned children younger than 16 from using most power-driven farm equipment, including tractors, if they had not taken a training course.

The proposal also would have prevented those younger than 18 from working in feed lots, grain bins and stockyards.

The Labor Department said it had received thousands of comments about the rule and its effect on small family-owned farms.

"As a result, the Department of Labor is announcing today the withdrawal of the proposed rule dealing with children under the age of 16 who work in agricultural vocations," it said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday.

The departments of Labor and Agriculture will work with such organizations as the American Farm Bureau Federation and the 4-H farm youth group to develop programs to reduce accidents for young workers, it said.

Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, welcomed the move, calling it "the right decision for our nation's family-based agriculture system."

But Reid Maki, coordinator for the Child Labor Coalition, said the rules had been aimed at protecting children drawing wages and did not apply to children working on their parents' farms.

Farm work is the most dangerous sector for young workers and pulling the proposed rule could mean another 50 to 100 deaths over the next decade, he said.

"We think they (the rules) were really well designed and would have saved some lives," he said.

They would have shit their pants had they seen me at 12, take a shotgun and a tractor (or a horse) up the logging road, alone, at 5:00 AM to get breakfast. Completely different world today.

You're gonna shoot a 'rabbit, squirrel, deer, bear, whatever' then skin/gut it and throw it on the fire you built,

you're def not gonna eat it raw,

then 'clean up' and get to school by eight.

With your assignment.

Please. Not to mention the night before, when you had to clean the gun and service the tractor.

LOL!

No, I would bring home squirrels and sometimes rabbit then grandma would skin them and cook them into some of the best homemade biscuits and gravy you'd ever had in your life. Ever had squirrel gravy with homemade biscuits? FRESH eggs and toast with homemade jelly! Mmmmmmmmmmm.

And this was summer with no school. During the school year I lived in the city.

Then we'd go put up hay, but at 12 I was too small to throw the bails up on the trailer. I could do it, but I couldn't keep up with the big kids and we were in a hurry, so I drove the tractor. :o) Had to get the hay in before we could go fishing.

Sorta opposite.

I never got to enjoy 'hay rides' until an adult. After moving West.

O, and we ate Cattle, pork, and chicken/frog legs, catfish. Venison/duck the only game. And it was gamey....;}

You have to age it, at least 30 days.

In the winter you can do that at home. Just wrap it with plastic and hang it in the barn for 30 days or so. Wait until it starts turning brown. Then it's delicious and melts in your mouth. With deer anyway, never shot a duck.

Really! You'll have to expand on that some time.
