International News Title: NASA Scientist Guilty Of Spying For Israel (13-year sentence +2 served) NASA scientist Stewart Nozette has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after he admitted to offering top secret space information to Israeli officials, which turned out to be an FBI sting operation. I accept full responsibility, Nozette told U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman on March 21. The disgraced scientist added that he was paying for a fatal lack of judgment. As previously reported, Nozette was approached by an FBI agent posing as an Israeli spy who gave him US$11,000 for the classified information, which was then passed at a dead drop DC post office. Nozette acted as a technical consultant for an unnamed aerospace firm that the Israeli government owned. From 1998 through 2008, the scientist answered the companys questions and, in return, Nozette received regular payments from the company, an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit back in October 2009. According to the Nature blog, that Israeli Aerospace Company paid Nozette some US$225,000. In court, prosecutors played video of Nozette saying he would charge Israel at most one per cent for passing information about an unspecified program that he said cost the U.S. government US$200 million. Ive sort of crossed the Rubicon, he told the undercover agent. The government suspected Nozette might be interested in spying after a investigators searched his Chevy Chase, at his home in Maryland in February 2007 as part of the tax and fraud probe. The search of his home turned up classified documents, though Nozettes lawyers said in his defence that they were not marked as such. Nozette was not allowed to have unsecured classified documents in his home. Agents also discovered Nozette sent an email in 2002 threatening to sell information about a classified program he was working on to Israel or another country. The FBI decided to conduct an undercover operation to see how serious he was. The attempted selling of secrets never would have happened but for the tax and fraud case, said Nozettes attorney, Bradford Berenson. Prosecutors and Nozettes lawyers accepted the 13-year sentence, which gives him credit for the two years he has already spent behind bars. Nozette also was ordered to pay US$217,800 in restitution for fraudulent claims he made to the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Arlington, Virginia and NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
