A suspect was in custody Monday afternoon after a shooting at an Oakland Christian university left at least five dead.

The gunman is reported to have opened fire in a classroom at Oikos University, hitting some of his victims at point-blank range. Police described the gunman as an Asian male with a heavy build, wearing khaki clothing, but they have not identified the person in custody.

"I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Officer Johnna Watson said.

TV news footage shows wounded people have been brought out of the building, and more gurneys are being brought in.

Four victims arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment, said spokeswoman Jerri Randrup. Earlier, television news footage showed officers surrounding the building in search of the suspect. The footage also showed wounded people being carried out of the building, and more gurneys were being brought in.

Six people were killed and three others wounded after a disgruntled student walked into a classroom at a small independent university located near the Oakland airport and opened fire.

Police confirmed that a suspect was taken in custody in the parking lot of a shopping mall in nearby Alameda. Sources have told KTVU that the gunman walked into a Safeway store and told someone he had just shot several people.

Alameda police then arrived and took him in without further incident.

"We do believe we have detained an individual responsible for the shooting at the college," Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.

The shooting took place at Oikos University, located at 7850 Edgewater -- in an area of warehouses near the Oakland International Airport. sources have told KTVU that the gunman had recently been kicked out of a class at the school.

Deborah Lee, 25, a student from China who is studying at Oikos, said she was in an ESL class when she heard four or five pops that sounded like firecrackers.

She said her teacher left the room to see what was going on, then she heard a person yell, "Someone has a gun!"

Her teacher told the students to run, and everyone ran out of the classroom and left the school.

The Oakland Fire Department said it received the first call of the shooting around 10:50 a.m.

Oakland City Council President Larry Reid said he has been told by police that six people had died and three were wounded. Several victims were transported to Highland Hospital for treatment while the bodies of several of the dead covered by tarps were lined up on the grass in front of the school.

Police said eyewitnesses described the gunman as a male, Asian, heavy build and wearing khaki clothing. Anyone with any information is asked to call 911 or 510-777-3321.

I would be happy if they just started putting people at planned parenthood on trial for murder , accessory to murder etc. From the butcher to the secretary to the Janitor. Arrest them all. Then move onto the other baby killing mills. Put everyone that works for them on trial too. The death penalty would be to lenient but it will have to do.

Illinois - Obama said his opposition was because of technical language he felt might have "interfered with a woman's right to choose" and said Illinois law already required medical care in such situations.

Federal - Obama voted against the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, saying "On an issue like partial birth abortion, I strongly believe that the state can properly restrict late-term abortions.

Obama's reasons for voting against Induced Infant Liability Act in Illinois, and the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act in the Senate seem pretty Conservative. If law already exists in Illinois to protect the life of an infant born alive, the the law Obama voted against was a useless feel good addition to the books designed to make "real" conservatives look like they'd done something to appease their radical brethren.

Leaving stuff up to the states to determine used to be Conservative and that's why Obama said he voted against the federal law.
