A suspect was in custody Monday afternoon after a shooting at an Oakland Christian university left at least five dead. The gunman is reported to have opened fire in a classroom at Oikos University, hitting some of his victims at point-blank range. Police described the gunman as an Asian male with a heavy build, wearing khaki clothing, but they have not identified the person in custody.
"I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Officer Johnna Watson said.
TV news footage shows wounded people have been brought out of the building, and more gurneys are being brought in.
Four victims arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment, said spokeswoman Jerri Randrup. Earlier, television news footage showed officers surrounding the building in search of the suspect. The footage also showed wounded people being carried out of the building, and more gurneys were being brought in.
