Individual Mandate: Republicans Were for It Before They Were Against It. In Fact, It Was Their Idea

In the Republican presidential debate Tuesday night, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged, apparently in an unguarded moment, that a core element of "ObamaCare," the requirement that all Americans be enrolled in either a private or public health insurance plan, was a proposal originated by the Heritage Foundation, a powerful conservative think tank.

Gingrich made the admission as he was denying former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's accusation that the former Republican leader was once a supporter of the mandate.

I'm sure the other presidential hopefuls on the stage in Las Vegas were holding their breath, praying they would not be asked why they all are now so staunchly opposed to the very notion of such a mandate, which several GOP attorneys general are even alleging in various lawsuits violates the U.S. Constitution. As a result of those lawsuits, the Supreme Court is likely to rule next year on the constitutionality of the mandate and the entire reform law.

The candidates' prayers were answered. Not one of them was asked why an idea conceived more than two decades ago by several conservative economists and favored by Republican lawmakers is a horrible idea now.

This was Heritage's less odious alternative to HillaryCare (which is what this thing called ObamaCare really is). Obama never campaigned for this but Hillary's clique in the Senate rammed this through, much as the Dims in 1993 rammed through stuff until it cost them control of the House.

Once the GOP was in power, no elected Republicans made a serious effort to institute it.

It's pure bunk to pretend this is a Republican program. Obama's minions are now claiming that, because Heritage once proposed it as an alternative to HillaryCare, that means that ObamaCare really is a bipartisan bill despite the fact it never got a single vote from a Republican in either house of Congress (umm...maybe they got Cao's vote on the first round in the House which wouldn't count for much since the election of Scott Walker meant that the Dems had to pass the Senate's version unaltered).

More of your (plural) expertise (ie spin), I see. Bring it up with Newt. He made the statement.

I don't need to.

When he was Speaker, the GOP had the votes but made no such move. Nor have they at various times in since when they controlled either or both houses of Congress.

What some thinktankers say or some Speaker out of office means nothing. Only when they cast official votes in Congress can it possibly mean anything.

Years back, for instance, in the Eighties, Barry Goldwater favored gay rights. Does that somehow mean that every Republican from that point in time is required to believe in it and vote for it? No. Yet that is about how "bipartisan" ObamaCare was.

Your first clue should have been when Reid and a handful of Dem senators met in a locked room and posted guards to keep the Republicans out.

Bipartisan, my white shiny ass.

Are you saying Newt would choose to lie since he's now out of office? While actually handing the ammo to Obama?

"You guys" need to purge his lack of ideological purity from your ranks.

You mean like he did while rolling around on the couch with Pelosi?

She did everything but use a strap-on on him.

He's a cheap whore. Now he's selling photos of himself with supporters for $50.
