In case you hadn't noticed, it's been an extraordinary week of weather. Here is a collection of milestones and headlines from around Michigan and the Midwest.

• Forecasters in Grand Rapids are suggesting the temperature could reach as high as 88 degrees on Thursday. The National Weather Service office there is keeping a running tally of falling records for Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Lansing.

• Traverse City saw a fifth consecutive day of record-breaking heat and likely will see temperatures in the mid-80s again today before an anticipated cooldown on Thursday, according to the Record-Eagle.

• Marquette broke its March 20 high-temperature record Tuesday by a whopping 22 degrees, and tied its all-time heat record for March, which was set Sunday, according to the NWS. The Upper Peninsula still has trace snow in some places, and the NWS provides an animated satellite image showing how fast most of it has disappeared.

• Because of the heat, low humidity and gusting wind, there is an elevated risk of fires in the Northern Lower Peninsula, according to the NWS office in Gaylord.

• The unseasonable warmth is giving morel mushroom enthusiasts a jump on their hunting season, the Associated Press reports.

• Chicago recorded its warmest-ever Election Day, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Everyone's noticed it.

But no one wants to talk about it.....;}

And what's that idiom?

7+ in of rain last 48 hours. Expecting 1.5 in more today.

"For 25 years climatologists have been telling us to expect exactly this kind of weather — such extremes become ever more likely as we warm the planet. It’s not just heat; it’s also drought and flood. Last year, the U.S. suffered through more multi-billion-dollar weather disasters than any other year in history. And it’s not just the U.S. — in 2010, the world’s largest insurance company said there was no way to explain the rapid planetary spike in extreme weather except for global warming.

But here’s the weird part: In our political life, all the storms are about contraception and gas prices. In 1988, presidential candidate George H.W. Bush promised to meet “the greenhouse effect with the White House effect,” and it was considered normal and proper, even though climate science was still in its infancy. Now, even though the science is long since settled, the GOP contenders vie to produce the most clownish possible response.
