WASHINGTON The White House said Tuesday that President Barack Obamas 13-year-old daughter Malia was safe after an earthquake hit Mexico where she is on spring break vacation with friends. In light of todays earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger, said Kristina Schake, spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama.
Schake repeated the White House request for journalists and photographers to respect the privacy and security of Malia Obama, and her sister Sasha when they were not appearing in public with their parents.
A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Mexico Tuesday, causing residents in the capital several hundred miles away to rush out onto the streets but no immediate reports of serious damage.
The quake struck near the tourist resort of Acapulco, just after midday some 15 miles (25 kilometers) northeast of the town of Ometepec, the US Geological Survey said.
