GOP Govs. Press Obama On Mandates: "we can’t pass our own bills without Obama getting in the way" Three GOP governors who met with President Obama on Monday said they personally pressed him to lessen federal mandates and regulations on states. “I’d just like to be a governor and be allowed to take care of my state,” South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said at a press conference held by the leadership of the Republican Governors Association following the meeting. Haley and two other high-profile Republican governors in town for the meeting were critical of Obama, arguing that he and the federal government are interfering with states. “In South Carolina we can’t pass our own bills without Obama getting in the way. We pass illegal immigration reform, he stops it. We pass voter ID, he stops it. We get Boeing in, he stops it,” Haley said. “This president is trying to handle the entire country and he’s failing.” Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, also Republicans, were likewise critical of Obama. The Republican governors attended a bipartisan meeting earlier in the day in the White House, where Obama emphasized education in his public remarks. McDonnell said education represents an issue where there was “a lot of room for common agreement.” But Haley called the meeting “somewhat frustrating.” “There’s not a governor who would say they’re not for education,” she said. “He’s constantly telling us what we should spend on but he’s not allowing us the flexibility to do it,” Haley continued. She said she walked out of the meeting feeling that she was told what Obama wanted to have happen, but not with a feeling he would push Democrats in Congress to make it happen. She also criticized the president for “finger pointing” when it came to delayed policy change. “We don’t have the luxury of finger pointing” as governors, she said. McDonnell said he also pressed Obama to lower federal mandates on states. “I specifically asked [Obama] to cut down on the number of unfunded mandates on the states,” McDonnell said, citing “crushing statutes and environment regulations,” the new healthcare reform laws and “education demands.” “We asked him to back off on those and review the existing mandates on the states, and to his credit, he agreed to work with the governors,” he continued. Jindal said he went into the meeting convinced that a conservative president is needed in the White House, and left even more convinced. Although the three governors involved in the press panel avoided naming names — McDonnell and Haley have endorsed Mitt Romney in the GOP race and Jindal endorsed Texas Gov. Rick Perry before he dropped his bid for the nomination — Jindal said it was a “healthy thing that we’re having a competitive primary race.” The governors dodged a question on Rick Santorum's criticism of Obama on education policy, with Haley saying only, "The candidates can speak for themselves." Santorum on the campaign trail called Obama a snob for his desire to see everyone in America go to college. Obama clarified Monday that his push for higher education was not limited to a four-year degree, but encompassed basic training and vocational education as well. McDonnell went on to suggest that although signs of improvement in the economy are promising, it is too early to call it a trend. He said Republican governors can take credit for the improvement that is ongoing. “Eleven out of fifteen states that have been ranked as the most business-friendly states in America by CNBC are governed by Republican governors. Seven out of 10 states that have the lowest unemployment rates in America are governed by Republican governors,” McDonnell said. “If you want to see what a Republican president is going to do, look at what Republican governors are doing today,” he said.
