Actions, Not Words: For four years and counting, Obama has worked to find a way to make premature and unnecessary cuts in Social Security and Medicare. Don't look at his words, he's a politician. Look at what he's done, especially the repeated and unnecessary concessions to the Republicans. It's not about the deficit, at least the chained-CPI COLA planned for Social Security, because the program is not a part of the deficit. So there must be some other explanation.

I can't BELIEVE it... you actually got something right.
Speaking Up: Boehner's inability to muster a passing vote in a House his party controls raises the question of how much of the House he speaks for and whether he'll be Speaker come January. To win the job he'll need an absolute majority of the House. He doesn't have one now. Now if we could get Obama to stop negotiating with himself...
The Brotherhood of the Flagellants: With no coherent threat of scourging from the right, House Democrats are working on a plan that would cut Social Security benefits, plus reduce the benefits of about 50 other federal programs that are keyed to cost of living adjustments.
No, thank YOU. I enjoy shitting on you, and your idiocy.
The only thing that would make it better, would be pissing on your lifeless face. And as you fucking socialists keep pushing your bullshit, the odds of that get better and better.
In a way, oil extraction is a big chemical reaction where oil and oxygen are the reactants and human beings are the catalyst. It is impressive that these models work so well in some historical cases - not all cases, of course: the world's economy is a complicated system. But the fact that it is a complicated system doesn't mean that it doesn't obey the laws of physics. When there are no more reactants, the reaction must end.

3. Oil: the present situation
So much for the so called "Hubbert model". It is an interesting model, but you have to remember that models are always approximations of reality. This is valid in chemistry just as well as in oil production. So, let's go see some data about the real world, here, for instance this one (taken from Wikipedia):

Note also that the high cost of extraction is not the only problem. As more effort is made to extract from expensive resources, we see that we produce more CO2 for the same amounts of energy generated. And this has an impact on climate. Even here in Russia. Let me just show to you the fires in East Siberia of this year - one of the consequences of climate change.

Nuclear plants or renewable energy, possibly both things, but it is essential that we develop and install new forms of energy in the future.
This is the crucial point and the big challenge we face. Either we succeed in developing and using these new methods, or we'll have big, big troubles. And, as you saw, catalysis is a fundamental factor in these new perspectives. It is fascinating field to work in. It has always been one and now it is even more so!
And so the takeaway:
We can continue with fossil fuel liquids, but we'll need to convert CO2 to CO to oil.
And to do that, get some Nukes/Wind/New Planet....and we're Good to Go....
Treasury Secretary Paulson shoved bailouts down Congress throat by threatening martial law if the bailouts werent passed. And the bailouts are now perpetual.

Martyr attack US invaders airbase; more 100 killed Zabihullah Mujahid E-mail Print PDF Wednesday, 12 Safar 1434 Wednesday, 26 December 2012 13:31
KHOST, Dec. 26 Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at 8:00 a.m. local time, a brave martyrdom-seeking Mujahid of the Islamic Emirate conducted a martyr attack on the US major military airbase in the capital of Khost province by slamming his explosive-filled truck at the gate of the airfield, killing as many as 100 foreign invaders and local puppets of the occupation forces and wounding several dozens more, Mujahideen official said.
Wednesdays successful attack was carried out by a Mujahid Omar when the US soldiers were trying to frisk a large number of the puppets and other people who try to enter the base and severe American terrorist forces at the expense of selling out their country.
More than 250 puppets were said to be at the gate when the attack occurred, slamming the gate of airbase where a C.I.A office is based which is also said to be badly damaged.
Meantime, the attack site was cordoned off, blocking all the roads and several ambulance helicopters landed in the base to evacuate the dead and wounded.

Facebook Suspends Account For Questioning Official Narrative on Shooting
On Saturday, Connecticut state police warned that people posting misinformation on social media websites would be investigated and prosecuted.
However, this threat could apply to the vast majority of the mainstream media, who in their haste to get out ahead of the story reported numerous details that soon turned out to be completely incorrect.
- It was initially reported that Adam Lanzas mother, the first victim of the rampage, was a teacher at the school, which was not true.
- It was initially reported that Lanza had also killed his father, which was not true.
- It was initially reported that the culprit behind the massacre was Ryan Lanza, Adam Lanzas brother, which was not true.
- Initial reports that a second gunman arrested in the woods behind the school was involved in the massacre were later dropped without explanation.
Given that most of the misinformation about the shooting came from corporate media sources, the fact that Facebook is punishing users for asking questions about the proper sequence of events essentially labeling such activity a thought crime is a worrying development.

The planes had the call signs "Bobcat 14" and "Bobcat 17." A partial transcript of air traffic controller communications reveals they were communicating with the control tower at Washington's Reagan National Airport, which is less than a mile from the Pentagon, between at least 9:31 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. on September 11. [1] (The attack on the Pentagon took place at 9:37 a.m. [2]) Radar data has shown that the two aircraft flew "in trail" (in single file, with one directly behind the other) at an altitude of 21,000 feet, and were overhead in the few minutes before the Pentagon was hit. [3]
LAUNCHED FROM DOVER AIR BASE It would seem essential to establish the exact identities of these aircraft and find out what they were doing in the vicinity of the Pentagon at such a critical time. Yet, eight years after the attacks took place, we still do not have this information. (The fact that these aircraft were near the Pentagon at the time it was hit is itself virtually unknown.)

Fiscal Cliff gone over.
Note: I wrote the following after watching the Prez on TV. His smiling demeanor and tough guy talk led me to believe that a "patch" on the cliff might happen. Four hours later, and that is not the case. The House will not vote on anything today.
There is a chance that the House could vote tomorrow. This would bring results along the lines I describe below. But if the House does not vote, then it means there will be a long fight. A fight that could go on until the debt limit shuts the government.

"Waugh will note, I was familiar with bin Laden from [CIA] traffic, but this was the first time I had heard the term al-Qaeda. [Waugh and Keown, 2004, pp. 121] According to most other media accounts, US intelligence does not learn about the existence of al-Qaeda until several years later, not long before the State Department publicly uses the term in 1996 (see August 14, 1996). For instance, US News and World Report will even assert in 2003, So limited was the CIAs knowledge that it began using al-Qaedas real name only [in 1998]10 years after bin Laden founded the organization. Jack Cloonan was a participant or observer in the following events: Shortly After May 1993: Ali Mohamed Describes Al-Qaeda Training Camps, Possibly More, to US Military Edit event
Double agent Ali Mohamed is interviewed by the US military about al-Qaeda, but what exactly is said is uncertain because the interview files are supposedly lost. When Mohameds FBI handler John Zent interviewed him in May 1993 (see May 1993), he mentioned al-Qaeda training camps. FBI agent Jack Cloonan, who will later investigate Mohamed, will recall, John realizes that Ali is talking about all these training camps in Afghanistan. And starts talking about this guy named bin Laden. So John calls the local rep from army intelligence and arranges for them to interview him. A special team of army investigators shows up from Fort Meade, Virginia, which is the home of the NSA. They bring maps with them and they bring evidence. And so they debrief Ali, and he lays out all these training camps. What else he may reveal is not known. Cloonan is not sure why Mohamed volunteered all this vital al-Qaeda information. Earlier in the year, FBI investigators discovered that Mohamed stole many top secret US military documents and gave them to Islamic militants (see Spring 1993). However, Mohamed faces no trouble from the Defense Department about that. FBI agent Joseph OBrien will later ask, Who in the government was running this show? Why didnt the Bureau bring the hammer down on this guy Mohamed then and there? Whatever Mohamed says in this interview is not shared with US intelligence agencies, even though it would have obvious relevance for the worldwide manhunt for Ramzi Yousef going on at the time since Yousef trained in some of the camps Mohamed is describing. Several years later, Cloonan will attempt to find the report of Mohameds interview with army intelligence but we were never able to find it. We were told that the report was probably destroyed in a reorganization of intelligence components in the Defense Department. [Lance, 2006, pp. 130-131]

Even high-level government officials were not aware of the CIAs domestic spying program until very recently. Counterintelligence! exclaimed one Justice Department official upon learning some details of the program. Theyre not supposed to have any counterintelligence in this country. Oh my God. Oh my God. CIA archivist and historian Gerald Haines will later write that the committee was thoroughly deceived by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who officially cooperated with the committee but, according to Haines, actually worked hard to undermine its investigations and to stonewall the release of documents to it.
FISA refused FBI The Judiciary Committee has been investigating FISA problems at the FBI, including holding closed hearings where Mr. Bowman and others were questioned about the Moussaoui case. Mr. Grassley said a 26-page electronic communication from the Minneapolis agents contained information that "a reasonable person would have concluded" was sufficient to obtain a FISA warrant. He said the application should have gone forward to the Justice Department and the FISA court. Instead, he said, FBI Supervisory Special Agent Michael Maltbie concluded there was not enough information and that Mr. Bowman agreed, although he was aware Mr. Maltbie had "removed certain information before making a presentation of questionable accuracy and length to the national security law unit."
August 28, 2001: Attorney Kills Moussaoui Warrant Request Edit event
Mike Maltbie and Rita Flack of the Radical Fundamentalist Unit (RFU) forward a request for a warrant to search Zacarias Moussaouis belongings (see August 21, 2001) to National Security Law Unit chief Spike Bowman. The request was submitted by the Minneapolis field office (see August 22-28, 2001), which has been trying to obtain a warrant for some time. Earlier in the day, Maltbie edited the request, removing information connecting Moussaoui to al-Qaeda through a rebel group in Chechnya (see August 28, 2001). RFU chief Dave Frasca was to attend the meeting, but is called away at the last minute. According to Bowman, who is already very familiar with the facts in this case, Maltbie is adamant that there is not enough evidence to issue the warrant. Bowman agrees, saying that the evidence fails to implicate Moussaoui as an agent of a foreign power. The FBI thus abandons the effort to obtain a FISA warrant and begins planning his deportation (see (August 30-September 10, 2001)). Between August 20-September 10, 2001: FBI Headquarters Agent Apparently Worried Moussaoui Case Will Damage His Career Edit event
Mike Maltbie, a supervisory agent with the Radical Fundamentalist Unit (RFU) at FBI headquarters, tells Minneapolis agent Harry Samit, who has arrested Zacarias Moussaoui and wants to search his belongings, that getting an intelligence warrant can be bad for an agents career if it gets fouled up. Maltbie comments that he wants to preserve the existence of his advancement potential. The Minneapolis field office is in dispute with the RFU over whether a warrant should be granted to search Moussaouis belongings, which contain enough information to potentially prevent 9/11 (see August 16, 2001 and August 20-September 11, 2001). At a key meeting with an attorney about whether to go forward with the warrant request, Maltbie is adamant that the warrant should not be granted (see August 28, 2001). [Newsday, 3/21/2006]

Weve noted many times that when it comes to corporate media coverage of the so-called budget sequesterthe immediate cuts to military and social spending set to hit in a matter of weekswhat matters most is what will happen to the military. The Washington Post had a whole piece (2/13/13) devoted to yet another round of complaints from military leaderswithout a single comment from anyone who might take the view that cutting military spending would not be such a disaster.
The LAPD Got their Man How They Wanted Him: Dead Wed, 02/13/2013 - 11:10 by: Dave Lindorff
"Burn that fuckin' house down...Fucking burn this motherfucker!!"
--Voices overheard on police radio at the scene of the cabin where Chris Dorner was trapped and burned to death
It was clear from the outset when fired LAPD cop Chris Dorner began wreaking his campaign of vengeance and terror against his former employer that the California law enforcement establishment, led by the LAPD itself, had no interest in Dorner surviving to face trial, where he could continue to rat out the racist and corrupt underbelly of the one of the countrys biggest police departments.
Dorner, as I wrote earlier, claimed he had been fired for speaking up during his three years on the force, through channels and to superior officers, about incidents he had witnessed of police brutality and of the rampant racism that permeates the department -- not just white on black, but black on Asian, Asian on Latino and Latino on white. His response to being sacked -- threatening to kill senior officers he blamed for this law enforcement distopia as well as some of their family members -- was criminally insane, but his complaints, made in a 6000-word post on Facebook, had and continue to have the ring of truth.
Change never comes top down. Bottom up only works. Society's privileged never yield it. Pressure slowly builds for change. Growing human need takes so much.
When pain levels cross a threshold of no return, all bets are off. Celente says "(w)hen people lose everything and have nothing else to lose, they lose it."
Hopefully it'll be soon enough to matter. The world can't tolerate much more.

After falling to a 17-year low in 2012, European car demand is expected to contract further this year, squeezing mass-market brands still harder between excess capacity and cut-throat pricing. Most carmakers see the regional market shrinking between 3 and 5 percent in 2013.
Tentative hints of a broader euro zone economic upturn have yet to percolate to the car industry.
Germany in particular is weighing on the outlook. After resisting much of last year's slump, Europe's biggest car market is in sharp decline, extended by an 8.6 percent drop in January.

The corporate governments of the world have been following the playbook of William Casey, U.S. Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, since long before he uttered these words in 1981: Well know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false. Its working great, as indicated by the one-third of Americans who would accept cavity searches in exchange for the privilege of flying commercial airlines, among many other such anecdotes.

* Fail * Jamie Dimon
There's a reason why Wall Street is so "beloved" by 99% of the people, and that reason is today best summarized by Jamie Dimon's 'witty' retort to Mike Mayo, perhaps the most hated banking analyst, who asked the JPM CEO a simple question - why affluent customers would not pick UBS over JPM due to a mismatch in capital ratios, to which Dimon's response is even simpler: "that's why I'm richer than you."

Update: Commenter R. Gates has a firm meteorological grasp of current events, which not only could be influenced by the state of the sea ice, but also have to do with the early breaking down of the Polar Vortex I alluded to in my latest blog post on the cracking event (Arctic freezing season ends with a loud crack). Here's his explanation in a comment below:
There are certainly two dynamics at play in the "weirding" of this winter's weather, but before discussing them, it would probably be good to understand that we are in a new regime of climate and therefore weather patterns, and thus, the weather is only weird compared to some former regime. In other words-- weird is the new norm, and it will be weird in the future not to have blocking patterns and associated extremes that come with climate change.
