"We stand to lose a proportional amount of human capital accumulated over the past five hundred years as the benighted people of post-Roman Europe lost, and it may take us a thousand years or more to recover - if we recover at all. It's especially disturbing to see the infiltration of the latest version of Jesus mumbo-jumbo - Southern Republican Nascar Evangelical orthodoxy - take over the collective mind of the USA. "

One of them mandated that the National Defense Highway Systembetter known as the nations freewaysbe closed to civilian traffic. There were good practical reasons for that step, but nobody had thought about what would happen when millions of Americans tried to flee urban targets and found the freeways barricaded. All narcissistic sociopaths, wth a touch of prima donna and perfumed prince. Can anyone look at Romney and not see a world class sissy?

Professor Daniel M. Abrams and his graduate student Mark J. Panaggio -- both right-handers -- are the first to use real-world data (from competitive sports) to test and confirm the hypothesis that social behavior is related to population-level handedness.
The results are published April 25 in The Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

In the general experience of humankind, there is little new here except insofar as America is in many ways a historically unique nation. Certainly for Americans this nation's failure is indeed new, and it has obviously been very hard for them to swallow. Speaking for myself, having grown up in the 1950's and 60's, I can say that nothing in my personal experience prepared me for the sort of America we have in 2012.
Being a historically unique nation, and the greatest military power the world has ever seen, America will no doubt (ultimately) fail uniquely and spectacularly.
The interesting questions now are when does all this end? How does it end? If we accept the premise that no meaningful change is possible, a premise which is supported by countless observations of what actually happens in Americanothingwe are forced to conclude that, sooner or later, America's story ends in tears for most of its citizens. On the other hand, America's manifest failure can probably go on for many years in its current form.
Beyond this point I don't want to go today. What I've said is already depressing enough."

They have not set up an emergency cash savings strategy."

" The treaty, as it turned out, was surprisingly generous. No one had to admit fault or pay reparations; the United States simply had to accept the status quo in East Africa and assign its rights over Diego Garciawhich was owned by Great Britain anywayto the Peoples Republic of China. Since the United States had no effective way to contest either demand, there was clearly no point in quibbling. The treaty was signed at the beginning of October, and ratified by a glum Congress three days later. "
Chad Myers is a met, not a journalist, so I think he was giving his honest opinion and not hyping Sandy. He says he spent 20 minutes working on that particular tweet. I agree, how was that tweet ridiculous? What is ridiculous is the lack of activity on here (yes, even in the middle of the night) for what could be a defining time in meteorological history. If everyone knew the 1993 Storm of the Century was going to happen again in 4 days, you would think people would be flying off the rails non-stop. We might have something even worse and nothing!?! On a side note, how do you spend 20 minutes on 140 characters?
And I don't Even want to here about Jesus and prayers for Sandy to hit somewhere else.
For those with gasoline generators, 10-15 gallons really isn't enough. That may only last a day or two. You should probably consider 30-40 gallons at least on the possibility gas stations may not have power to pump from their tanks.
For those with gas stoves, most use some sort of electronic/spark ignition which won't work without power. Have butane wand type lighters on hand.

The 00Z (8PM EDT)
runs of the major global models have really consolidated not only on a target area but on a target time. Up until now they were pretty divergent on landfall time. Now all of them have somewhere just south of New York City near 8PM on Monday evening (2012-10-30 00z). That is the worst possible outcome for the Jersey shore, NYC and Long Island as far as coastal surge damage is concerned, especially due to the long period of onshore winds and rising water that will occur before Sandy gets onshore. Just terrible if this plays out.
Sandy's storm surge a huge threat This afternoon's 3:30 pm EDT H*Wind analysis from NOAA's Hurricane Research Division put the destructive potential of Sandy's winds at a modest 2.8 on a scale of 0 to 6. However, the destructive potential of the storm surge was record high: 5.8 on a scale of 0 to 6. This is a higher destructive potential than any hurricane observed since 1969, including Category 5 storms like Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Camille, and Andrew.

If you have a barometer at home, take a look at it - it doesn't go that low. If that occurs, this storm will bring the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded on the East Coast.
I set my clock to the linked article...and I am glad I did.

Saturday, Sandy will be in Northern New York. Might not make it out of the US before it exits thru Maine.
The Area N and E of the Kentucky border to Nova Scotia will not be the same.

did the Rockaways flood during the '62 nor'easter? That's the benchmark I've been using.
From I've seen on other forums that people in NYC are not taking this serious and that its going to be another Irene.[/b]

Recalling those earlier Euro forecast landfall pressures ...932mb, no way, now perhaps way
There are no analog storms. This has not happened in Measured History.
Tuesday Last: Sandy Stalls in NY. The Perfect Storm.
And no one has evac'ed. Why should they when they've been burned so many times, they don't have $500 in the bank and NOAA's infighting on who's in charge.
Note no Warning/Watch areas as the 941 and dropping Sandy sets up over Penn/NY until Saturday.

Models most likely accounted for this already.
Will give Sandy a Fujiwhara spin - causing Sandy and the Cutoff Low to circulate CCW around each other.
This is what will draw Sandy NW into the coast. [/quote]

"Offsite power at the plant is in the process of being restored. [...]" Oh that's good /sarc
I hate how they want everyone to think that a "shut down" reactor poses no risk. Not a word about required cooling etc. It makes me want to call / write everytime. I'd be busy fulltime.

A coworker of mine just HAD to tell me that, "Thank goodness they shut down at least five NPP's "
Once I began, once again, explain to her HOW the stored fuel requires cooling and that even that process is sketchy because of clogged vents and lack of generators she feigned ignorance, "Well I don't know about that. All I know is what they (sic) report."
I nodded and went on my way only parting with, "Correct. You only know what they want you to know. Too bad they don't cover the basic science behind nuclear Because then, you might just know more than what they want you to know."
"President Obama asked Craig Fugate from FEMA to call me earlier in the day and offer any help. I assured him that we had, we think, everything under control but we appreciate the effort. What FEMA really can do is to help those parts of the country that don't have all of the extensive facilities and agencies and practice that New York City does. But I did want to thank them for their offer."
And THAT was a serious bridge burning right there, brian.....;}

bp was lying from Day 1 of the USSAbpEcocide.....just like us Dirty Fuckin Hippies said:
Subsequently petroleum industry geohazards engineer BK Lim claimed there were 3 leaking wells.
Friday, the government released new underwater video showing 3 wellheads at or near the Macondo reservoir:
* ROV Video of Well Head 1
* ROV Video of Well Head 2
* ROV Video of Well Head 3
These are not 3 different videos of the same wellhead. As the Coast Guard comments themselves state, and as apparent on the information contained on the videos themselves, these are 3 different wellheads in the Macondo 252 prospect.
We sent the new videos to Dr. Bea and asked him if the Deepwater Horizon Study Group knew there was more than one wellhead at the Macondo site.
Bea told us:
The Deepwater Horizon Study Group was aware of two well heads not three.
For the DHSG, BK Lim with a background in Gulf coast geology and petroleum engineering (see internet links below) was the person who originally started chasing the multiple well heads after he obtained the GPS coordinates and checked with the well permit documents.
During 2010, neither BP nor the USCG would confirm there was more than one well head location.
It would be good if someone with GPS GIS capabilities could develop a lease map that shows the three well head locations. A similar map is needed to locate all of the hardware that has been left on the sea floor in that area. I would hope that someone with the Department of the Interiors Bureau of Ocean Energy Management would have developed this information.
Postscript: None of the new videos of the 3 wellheads show leaking oil. But BPs explanation for the new miles-long oil sheen makes no sense (and see this), and other explanations may make more sense.
NEW YORK, 31 October 2012 (The Onion) Following Hurricane Sandys destructive tear through the Northeast this week, the nations 300 million citizens looked upon the trail of devastation and fully realized, for the first time, that this is just going to be something that happens from now on.
Like pushing a patient out of an ICU before s/he's ready.
A previous slight, puts the patient back in remission or worse.
And speaking of useless...
Anything over 10 stories is useless or worse.
Oh, I seethis is just going to be how it is from here on out, said New York City resident Brian Marcello, coming to terms with the fact that an immense storm that cripples mass transit systems and knocks out power for millions in the nations largest metropolitan area can no longer be regarded as an isolated, freak incident, and will henceforth be just a normal thing that happens. Hugely destructive weather events are going to keep happening, and they are going to get worse and worse, and living through them is something that will be a part of all our lives from now on, whether we like it or not.
