In terms of national tragedies, the bloodletting visited upon the GOP on November 7 is not all that significant. Really--that is the honest-to-goodness truth. For instance, December 7, 1941, and September 11, 2001, are two dates that immediately come to mind as more problematic for America and Americans. Unfortunately, November 7, 2006 is a near third. Pundits on both sides of the ideological aisle are weaving complex and contradictory explanations for the GOP collapse or Democrat wave, depending which ax one seeks to gore. For example, some claim that the Republicans were too timid on illegal immigration. Others say that “enforcement first” lead to the GOP meltdown. Rush Limbaugh insists that conservatives did not lose—rather it was weak-kneed Republicans who were not conservative enough--that took the noxious gas meted out by voters on Tuesday. On the left, the “Pelosi vision” seems to be more of a medical condition that causes her eyes to remain permanently dilated than an inspired sense of hope for America. The bug-eyed liberal from San Francisco actually believes that officials from places like Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia will be flying into San Francisco in order to learn how to remake their cities into bastions of liberalism, using Frisco as a template. Can you imagine rednecks from Georgia flocking to Pelosi’s hometown in order to learn how to make their cities gay-friendly, anti-military, anti-war, pro-abortion, anti-gun, pro-high tax sanctuaries, and for-Spanish-only illegal aliens? Yet that is how Pelosi and other lefties are spinning the election results. “America wants a new direction!” Pelosi screeches, not fully recognizing that Americans want that direction to be forward, not back to the tired old failed liberal foolishness from the 1960s. We may never know the exact reasons behind the November 7 nightmare. However, one thing seems relatively certain: Spinners from both sides, most of them unemployable in the real world, will conjecture and cross-conjecture this election to death. And they will do so until the 2008 campaign begins in earnest.

Truman gained fame and respect when his preparedness committee (popularly known as the "Truman Committee") investigated the scandal of military wastefulness by exposing fraud and mismanagement. His advocacy of common-sense cost-saving measures for the military attracted much attention. Although some feared the Committee would hurt war morale, it was considered a success and is reported to have saved at least $11 billion. In 1943, his work as chairman earned Truman his first appearance on the cover of Time Magazine. (He would eventually appear on nine Time covers and be named the magazine's Man of the Year in 1945 and 1949.) Truman's diligent, fair-minded, and notably nonpartisan work on the Senate committee that came to bear his name turned him into a national figure.
