You don't know ANYTHING. You only have your suspicions which are based on rumour.

At the risk of being accused of torturing an idiot, I'll ask anyway.

What the hell are you jibbering about now.

Yeah, it is, or you'd be able to answer the question outright.

You're not fooling anyone, especially not yourself.

...meaningless drivel...

A common treatment for dyslexia is for the subject to read what they have written 24 hours after the message.

They are asked then to edit or otherwise interpret the message again.

If they recognize the errors they are then asked to always write their sentences twice before using.

It is tedious but helpful and doesn't require additional pharmaceutical adjunct therapy.

Then of course, there is always the possibility that your drug/alcohol use will always interfere with any treatment applied.

Good luck, get happy with who you are; your family is getting frustrated.

General Grammar

Comments (44)

Tip Sponsored By

Grammar Girl here.

Today's topic is mixed metaphors.

Politicians often provide good fodder for language commentary, and one of Barack Obama's comments during the debates has been rattling around in my head for a while now. He made a comment that some people think he's "green behind the ears," and that struck me as a mixed metaphor. What Is a Metaphor?

I'll back up. First, a metaphor is a way of comparing two unrelated things to make your point more vivid. For example, Shakespeare said, "All the world's a stage." He compared the world to a stage to make his point that we're all like actors in a play. That's a metaphor.

Another example of a well-known metaphor is to say someone is walking on thin ice. It is a way of saying someone is doing something dangerous and creates a vivid image of a person needing to behave carefully to avoid falling through an ice covered lake.

The big difference between a metaphor and a simile is that a metaphor doesn't use the word "like" and a simile does. For example, it's a metaphor to say "All the world's a stage," and it's a simile to say "All the world is like a stage." Not a big difference in meaning, but it's the kind of thing you can get tripped up on if you're in school and you have to take a test about similes and metaphors.

You can remember that similes use the word "like" because "simile" has the letter "l" in it.

What Is a Mixed Metaphor?

So back to mixed metaphors. A mixed metaphor is when someone combines two unrelated metaphors. For example, two common metaphors someone can use to tell you to get a clue are “wake up and smell the coffee,” implying you need to be more alert, and “read the writing on the wall,” implying you need to see the bad news that is already right in front of you. A radio host once told me his favorite mixed metaphor combined those two. Someone told him to “Wake up and smell the coffee on the wall.” Suddenly the imagery doesn't make so much sense. Did someone throw coffee on the wall?

Sports metaphors tend to be popular and they're also easy to mix. For example, if you tried to motivate your co-workers by saying, “It's our turn at bat, so let's make this touchdown for the company,” you'd have mixed baseball and American football metaphors, and if you try to imagine the image that goes with the metaphor, you don't know whether to put your players on a baseball field or a football field.

Can Mixed Metaphors Be Fun?

Because they usually undermine the imagery of both of the metaphors that are combined, mixed metaphors are generally considered bad form. But sometimes people also like to play with mixed metaphors. It can be a fun way to turn a cliché on its head. For example, I've seen people mix the metaphors “Let's cross that bridge when we come to it,” meaning let's put off the decision, and “Don't burn your bridges” meaning don't destroy a something you'll need later. They get “We'll burn that bridge when we come to it,” which combines the meaning of the two metaphors into something like “We're ready to fight when the right time comes,” and still maintains imagery that makes sense. Did Obama Mix Metaphors?

So back to Obama and his “green behind the ears” statement. I immediately thought that he was mixing “wet behind the ears” with “green” -- two different metaphors that mean someone is naïve, young, or inexperienced.

The most common explanation for why “wet behind the ears” means young is that new babies are born covered in fluid, so they're wet, and behind the ears is one of the last places that dries if they aren't wiped off (1, 2).

There are a few reasons “green” can mean young and inexperienced – branches are green before they harden into brown wood, and apparently horns can also be green in young animals, thus the word “greenhorn (3, 4).”

Obama certainly wasn't the first person to utter “green behind the ears.” I found multiple examples of previous use in publications including The New York Times (5, 6), The Economist (7), and the Financial Times (8), but just because other people said it first doesn't mean it isn't a mixed metaphor.

Commentators on Ben Zimmer's column about Obama's mixed metaphor pointed out that the German equivalent of “green behind the ears” -- “grün hinter den Ohren” -- is common in Germany (9), and a Google search does show that it comes up more frequently than “green behind the ears,” so I tend to believe the commentators although I have no first-hand knowledge of the saying in German*. Finally, I surveyed my Twitter friends, and a couple of people said that “green behind the ears” is a common metaphor used by corn farmers and refers to young ears of corn. I was unable to verify this, but Obama is from Illinois – a corn growing region – so the explanation seems plausible. So Obama may have heard this expression around his home state, although I still suspect that if farmers are using “green behind the ears” it's still just a widely adopted mix of “wet behind the ears” and “green” because the imagery of “green behind the ears” doesn't make sense to me. But I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about corn farming, so if someone out there wants to leave a comment and set me straight, I welcome the information.

So I don't feel as if I can give you a definitive answer to the question of whether Obama used a mixed metaphor, the best I can do is to say “Probably,” but I do hope I've given you a better idea of what mixed metaphors are and why it's usually best to avoid them. Administrative

If you haven't checked out our show called The Nutrition Diva, I encourage you to do so. She has a great show about soy this week, and her show was just named one of the best podcasts of 2008 by iTunes, along with Grammar Girl. Thank you for all the nice comments you leave at iTunes, it helps spread the word about our shows and and also helps us win awards like that.

That's all. Thanks for listening.

* Although there are only about 12,000 more entries for “grün hinter den Ohren” than “green behind the ears” I tend to think the difference is significant because I believe a much higher proportion of Web pages are in English than German.

The mixed metaphor "green behind the ears"/"grün hinter den Ohren" is also a mixed one in German. It combines "nicht ganz trocken hinter den Ohren" (not yet quite dry behind the ears) with "Grünschnabel" (green beak, referring to the greenish-yellow root of young birds' beaks). Mr. IZ

My pet peeve is overly pedantic grammar neophites misidentifying errors in other people's speech and writing when their own grammar has plenty of room for improvement. It's great to offer constructive feedback and ask a percieved offender if they want feedback, but so often I see people using their limited knowledge of grammar as a way to belittle or discount someone's point simply. The beauty of language is that it is living. It breathes.

The most common error that gets me is putting the period and comma outside of closing quotation marks.

It's a small thing. wes

If you ... don't use exclamation points --- you should't be typeing ! Commas - semicolons - question marks are for girlie boys !

Except for one thing. Yukon isn't the teacher's pet. Yukon's response was a sensible rebuttal to an unreasonable demand in an open forum.

You want a food fight?

Use some of your other IDs at LP to kick the evil Goldi who owns you 24/7 plus one extra 24 this year.

You keep trying to convince yourselves that you 'pwn' someone when you don't and never have. You couldn't get rid of yukon even using false identity and fraudulent posts.

Most of you have to hide outside of your little hamster cage and guess what?

Nobody I know gives a blivet who you are because what you are is a coward.

I've had to look at some old posts recently going back 10-12 years because issues arise that I've not remembered well.

Some of the folks I dumped on then are still around and most of them still get dumped on. There are a few, however, who deserve an apology and in those cases they have received them.

The major point is that I'm still 'harrowup' and nobody cares who you are.

EWWWWW! Don't get to close, their gaydom might rub off on you. Marguerite, gatlin, 22rifle, harrowup, GrandIsland, yukon, whitesands and Goldie-Lox might require that you drink from their satanic fountain of sexual frenzy in the backroom.

someone needs to introduce him to reality, they appear to be complete strangers

The importance they put on bullying posters on small chit chat sites seems a bit over the top too.

If I was Newt, and I ever managesd to stumbled upon LP, I would demand they stop supporting me with their thuggish zealous tactics.

Almost every country in the Middle East is awash in oil, and we have to side with the one that has nothing but joos. Goddamn, that was good thinkin'. Esso posted on 2012-01-13 7:37:56 ET

...guess your next step is to start whining to stone, that i'm being mean to you

Not a whiner. Just chasing the hamsters back into their wheel is all I need to keep me happy and an audience like Nose Junky with no sense of humor, incapable of understanding sarcasm. Don Rickles would love NoseJunky in the audience.

For the last time, junior: LP is not in the tank for Newt. Just because I opine with a phrase, Give a Hoot, Vote for Newt doesn't mean I would vote for him in a primary. I'll be voting in the Democrat primary in Wisconsin this year in that Kathleen Falk needs my support so she can scare off everyone else in the race and then I can vote for Walker in the recall sham.

That said, Goldi and Marge are certainly pro Newt to the extreme but after six months of the Paulista BS it is a relief and since Marge bozoed me I'm safe from the overload.

Most are lukewarm to Newt by my estimate. While Romney will probably get the nod it will be a disaster for the GOP, so in one respect the other option whether Newt or Santorum will at least keep the House and hopefully get the Senate since they are going to lose to the current plick in office.

Never have seen for whom you would like to vote? Obama?

Harrowup - Are YOU or were YOU a bona-fide, certified, licensed, stamped&approved doctor of medicine within any state or region of the USA?

Without reading all your continuous bally-hoo about nothing concerning politics, please answer yes or no.

I am a constitutionalist. I know that some people (such as yourself and gatlin and GrandIsland) think chit-chat channels don't care about what you say......... but, as your legacy of posting your own personal details on the Internet is a trend of your own posting history, many people want to know if you were fooling around or is there any truth.

At stake is the issue of credibility in these chit-chat forums. If you lie about yourself then it is simple to understand that you lie about the entire world around yourself and your posts are complete TRASH, therefore.

Bucky to harrowup: Without reading all your continuous bally-hoo about nothing concerning politics, please answer yes or no.

Bucky, you said it yourself:

Posting to you has become a FUCKING waste of time, admiral. You are so FUCKING stupid that you are boring me further. FUCK OFF.

It's the whole point of the bozo filter, remember?

Besides, whorin'-up isn't interested in discussing reality, as much as pushing an overtly socialist agenda. Should you choose to question that agenda, he/she/it will wrap you around the axle of liberal stupidity, where you'll need an 8" bowie to cut yourself free...

With such posters as whorin'-up, the only way to win, is not to play their game. Same deal for complete loons like rabid-dog. I see he's back, but taking him off the bozo-list is an open invitation to waste my time on know- nothing posters, who clearly have lots of time to waste.

I am a constitutionalist.

As am I. I've learned (fairly late in life, unfortunately) that the GOP/DNC version of politics is a rigged game, so I'm in the same boat as you.

At stake is the issue of credibility in these chit-chat forums.

They describe this as a "chit-chat forum" to demean the forum. It's the same as Israelis who call anyone who reports some improper action of theirs, as "anti- semitic." Very effective as a propaganda tool...

But the fact that this label is constantly used indicates that it's isn't so little and powerless... I mean, if they thought it was worthless, why do they insist on posting here, and echoing the socialist talking-points, day-in, day-out? Why bother, unless they fear the truth...? Whorin-up, loonybitch, Ming, Brian S(ocialist) and the rest... if this place was a complete waste of time, they'd be over at DU(h), or whatever the latest socialist website was...

If your views, my views, those of jwpegler, hondo and the Stone were really so easily dismissed, then why do they spend so much energy and time attacking???

I think you underestimate the power of conservative sites like LF... And being a constitutionalist... means that you're the #1 enemy of the socialist scum- bags which try their best, to destroy this forum.

To: mcToejam, rat-boy, drippy, Alzheimer Fred, whitesands, t-bird, loonymom/ming, e-type jackoff, goober56, wreck, cal-CON, rabid dog, dummy DwarF, biff, harrowup the communist, and meguro. You're on the "a waste of human flesh" list. Piss off.

I don't recall attacking pegler, hondo and Stone for their views. I find their outlook to be new and instructive. Pegler's very good on economics and hondo is very funny and Stone is very tolerant.

You, on the other hand, are just an asswipe, which is sort of like toilet paper, but more like dry grass.
