Pelosi Vows to Stand With Obama Against Catholic Church; Says Decision Forcing Catholics to Act Against Faith Was ‘Very Courageous’

By Thomas Cloud

(CNSNews.com) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) vowed today that she will join with the Obama administration in standing up against the Catholic Church in defending a new regulation that will require Catholic individuals to buy, and Catholic institutions to provide, health insurance plans that cover sterilizations and artificial contraceptives, including those that induce abortions.

The Catholic church teaches that sterilization, artificial contraception and abortion are morally wrong and the Catholic bishops of the United States have argued that forcing a Catholic individual to purchase a health insurance plan that covers these things--or forcing a Catholic institution to provide such a plan--forces Catholics to act against their consciences and is a violation of the First Amendment right to free exercise of religion.

In letters being read from the pulpit in Catholic parishes across the nation, Catholic bishops are saying: “We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law.”

At her Wednesday press briefing, CNSNews.com asked Pelosi: “The administration has issued a regulation that will require all health-care plans to cover sterilization and all FDA-approved contraceptives, including those that induce abortions. This would force Catholic individuals and institutions to act against their consciences. All across the nation, Catholic bishops are saying:--

Pelosi responded: "Is this a speech, or do we have a question in disguise as a speech?"

CNSNews.com continued: “‘We cannot--we will not—comply with this law.’ Catholic bishops are saying they will not comply with this law. Will you stand with your fellow Catholics in resisting this law or will you stick by the administration?”

Pelosi: “First of all, I am going to stick with my fellow Catholics in supporting the administration on this. I think it was a very courageous decision that they made, and I support it.”

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius first announced the proposed regulation in August as part of the initial implementation of Obamacare. The regulation, as proposed, was set to take effect on Aug. 1 of this year. In September, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops sent public comments on the regulation to HHS. In these comments, the bishops called the regulation an “unprecedented attack on religious freedom” and urged that it be rescinded.

In November, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, met with President Obama and personally explained to him the Catholic Church’s objections to the regulation.

On Jan. 20, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that the regulations would go forward and will take effect for most health care plans as of Aug. 1. However, Sebelius gave religiously affiliated non-profit organizations---such as Catholic hospitals, universities, and charitable organizations---an additional year to “adapt” to the mandate. For them, it now set to take effect on Aug. 1, 2013.

Following Sebelius announcement, the Catholic bishops put out a statement calling the regulation “literally unconscionable.” Meanwhile, Catholic bishops around the country have been calling on Catholics to oppose the regulation.

Many of the bishops have published letters that priests are reading to their congregations. The letters explain the Catholic objections to the regulation and call for Catholics to resist it. Many of these letter include the following passage from the letter Bishop Paul Loverde of Arlington, Va., and Bishop Francis DiLorenzo of Richmond, Va., have asked their priests to read at Mass this coming Sunday:

“In so ruling, the Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled either to violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing do). The Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

“We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law.”

I agree with her, as it is the Catholics who are wrong here. This is one of the first things president Obama has done in a while that makes me feel good about him.

I hope he sticks to his guns and insures all women have access to family planning services including birth control.

It is one of the best ways to control and finally end the practice of abortion.

The stand of the Catholics only insures there will be more of them.

You're a hypocrite. On the one hand you say separation of church and state. Then you say they should do this. This makes you a control freak asshole.

So I'm curious as to how he'll feel when the government starts dictating things to him that he doesn't like??????

Think he'll scream bloody murder???? I betcha he does.....

Leftards only remaining big issue is abortion because of their beloved sexual revolution. That's their cause: Spreading anarchy and polymorphous perversity. Abortion permits that.

If the Catholic Church wants to be in the business of health care, they should provide it. Birth control prevents abortions. Four out of ten women who wind up with unwanted pregnancies abort them.

It's far better for children to be boar to parents who are ready for and can afford children. Women, and men should have the right to control when and if they procreate.

And if the Catholic Church wants to continue to run hospitals and offer medical care, they need to get out of the lives of their patients if they do not have the same views as them on birth control.

In fact, most Catholic church members practice birth control anyway. There is a huge gap between what the lay members and the clergy believe about birth control, and banning it at Catholic medical facilities won't change this.

I support President Obama on this one.

I guess most here have never heard of the rhythm method, which definitely is a form of birth control and not really favored by most Catholic husbands.

Almost every country in the Middle East is awash in oil, and we have to side with the one that has nothing but joos. Goddamn, that was good thinkin'. Esso posted on 2012-01-13 7:37:56 ET

I have heard of it. I was raised in a Catholic family, and I know it is not very foolproof a method, and it is sanctioned b the Catholic Church.

But then again, the Catholic Church is also against divorce as well. They believe that if a man and wife do not get along sexually, they should stay married and live together as if they were brother and sister with the hope that the bond can be restored before either partner dies freeing the other to possibly re-marry.

They also have a strange view of annulment, and it is a last resort that usually only the rich or well connected in the Church can get the clergy to go along with.

http://catholicinsight.com/online/church/divorce/c_annul.shtml

The Catholic Church is no realistic about family planning, and they are not realistic about marriage. My position is very much like most who had the church force on them even though they never believed in Christianity. Many who move to to other Christian faiths because they believe in the Christian religious indoctrination but are disenchanted with the Catholic Church have many of the trappings of my religious paradigm as well.

It was a profound relief to get through confirmation in the Catholic Church, because in my war with my mother and my Father's side of the family, we mutually con premised that I would have freedom from going to mass once I reached this rite of passage.

Of course, the catholic Church feels that if they have someone at a young age long enough, they will always remain Catholic.

But you might have noticed I am incredibly stubborn; epically so in fact. I never, ever bought the Christian view on the Goddess and my higher power is one that protects all life; not one where humans are the pinnacle of living things with everything under their subjugation and control.

I view Christianity and other religions like it, such as Islam or Judaism as designed to socialize and control human populations.

I have always felt this way, and felt people were nuts for taking the stories in the Bible literally, or for believing Christ existed since the very youngest age.

the Catholic premise did not work on me, because I never bought the snake oil, not ever for a moment of my life.

Humans are a species of animal that are sacred as all life, and should live in harmony with all other life forms. This necessitates them to not be so greedy and materialistic, and to control their numbers and to life in a proper biological niche.

The rhythm method and prohibition of divorce is not realistic or acceptable as sane positions, so I do not get along with the church I was confirmed into. I reject the infant baptism I was given as a baby, and want no Christian religious last rites or funeral when i die, which is something we all do.
