First Lady Michelle Obama Cites 'Remarkable Progress' On The Economy

First Lady Michelle Obama cited "remarkable progress" on the economy during a speech for a small crowd of high-profile Hollywood names in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.

"In the last three years, we've worked hard to get out of this mess and we've made some remarkable progress," the first lady told a group of about 135 supporters at a private campaign event for her husband. She listed President Obama's accomplishments on healthcare reform, the removal of troops from Iraq and the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell" among other items on the list of "promises kept" touted by Obama's reelection campaign.

"We know there are people still suffering and there is a long road left to travel," she continued, citing unfinished work as another reason to reelect Obama.

According to pool reports, the Beverly Hills event included some high-profile names from Hollywood, such as top Obama donors Jeffrey Katzenberg and Harvey Weinstein. Singer-songwriter Joshua Radin performed before Obama spoke. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, music industry representatives Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy and Jerry Ross, film producer Steve Bing, Rob and Michele Reiner and Will Ferrell's wife, Vivica, were also in attendance. http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/207885-michele-obama-cites-remarkable-progress-on-the-economy-

"You’re here because you know that we stand at a fundamental crossroads for our country," Michelle Obama told them. "You’re here because you know that in less than a year from now, we are going to make a choice that will impact our lives for decades to come."

She spoke about the struggles of the middle class and of hearing their stories as she traveled the country. She said Obama's "toughness and fight" comes from hearing the stories of struggling Americans.

"I hear the passion and the determination in [Obama's] voice," she said. "He says, 'You won’t believe what folks are still going through.' That’s what he tells me. He says, 'Michelle, this ain’t right, and we have to fix this. We have so much more work to do.' "

She added that her husband is "very cute and he can sing, go figure." The line was a reference to the moment last month when Obama broke into the song "Let's Stay Together" at a campaign event.

Obama urged the crowd to get involved in the campaign in order to keep "fighting the good fight."

Bad Economy Forces Welfare Agency Hiring Spree

Wednesday, Feb 1, 2012

The city’s Human Resources Administration has already hired 100 new employees and plans to hire another 100.

Economic woes have forced at least one city agency into a hiring spree -- adding more workers to process the demand for food stamps and other assistance.

The Human Resources Administration added more than 100 workers last July and plans to hire another 100 to serve the burgeoning number of New Yorkers applying for food stamps and rent assistance at their offices, according to the Daily News.

About 1.8 million New Yorkers are now on food stamps, which marks nearly a 65 percent increase from four years ago, according to city records. The increase in applicants has led to overcrowding at HRA offices throughout the city, and the agency said at a council hearing Tuesday that it had to hire scores of new workers and supervisors to manage the situation.

The HRA has also expanded its waiting rooms to accommodate the swell in applicants.

advertisement The city implemented a web-based food-stamp application program last year, but applicants still must be finger-printed at HRA centers before they can become eligible for benefits.

Advocates for the poor applauded HRA’s efforts to address overcrowding but, citing a survey that found long wait lines prevent nearly half of applicants from receiving welfare benefits, said more needs to be done.

“HRA faces an overcrowding emergency that is a result of a high level of need resulting from a lagging economy in the wake of the great recession,” said Liz Accles, an analyst for the advocacy group Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, according to the News.

The HRA’s deputy commissioner said alleviating overcrowding is a top priority.

The agency has recently lost $200 million in state funding due to budget cuts.

America Airlines-to-Cut-Up-to- 15000- Jobs

AMR seeks to shutter Alliance maintenance operation

By Frank Heinz | Wednesday,

Feb 1, 2012

American Airlines parent company AMR said Wednesday they will cut 13,000 jobs and close the Fort Worth Alliance maintenance hub as part of a five-year plan to save $3 billion per year.

NBC 5's Scott Friedman was the first to break the story early Wednesday morning that the Fort Worth-based airline was expected to announce they were cutting as many as 15,000 jobs nationwide.

Thomas Horton, Chairman and CEO, released a letter to employees Wednesday that highlighted the major changes designed to help the carrier emerge from bankruptcy a stronger airline.

Chief among those changes are staff reductions that are expected to save the company $1.25 billion annually and revenue enhancements worth another billion dollars. The remaining savings will come from altering route structures, capacity and replacing an aging fleet. The airline also hopes to boost revenue by increasing departures out of hubs in Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and New York by 20 percent over the next five years.

The 13,000 cuts include 1,400 management and support staff, 400 pilots, 2,300 flight attendants, 4,600 maintenance and related and 4,200 fleet service and other TWU employees, NBC News confirmed early Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor."

The question is not whether the Working Group wasted a day or two in issuing civil subpoenas. The Obama administration has wasted three years before issuing these subpoenas. (The Bush administration wasted eight years. The total waste is cumulative.) Civil subpoenas are the most preliminary form of investigation. DOJ should have been issuing grand jury subpoenas to every lender making liar’s loans and every entity packaging liar’s loans no later than September 2004 when the FBI warned that there was an “epidemic” of mortgage fraud and predicted that it would cause a financial “crisis.”

The Obama and Bush administrations have consistently failed to “pursu[e] any and all leads.” 12 million homes are underwater.

Nearly all will foreclose.

"This is the dirty little secret of U.S. aviation. You don't know where the plane that you're flying was repaired," said Jamie Horwitz, spokesman for the Transport Workers Union. "You assume standards are high for the person who works on your fuel line, but it doesn't necessarily follow."

Doesn't it just give you a warm, fuzzy feeling all over to know that almost all airline maintenance work is now being performed by poorly paid drones God knows where? Fuck, I may never get on an airplane again.

But please continue:

Horwitz said there are two major American-owned facilities doing the heavy maintenance work -- one in Tulsa, Okla., which has 6,500 union members, and another outside of Dallas with 2,200 union members.

Horwitz and industry experts say almost all other U.S. airlines already have outsourced regular overhaul maintenance required for aircraft to facilities in countries such as China, El Salvador and throughout South America.

He also wouldn't comment on whether the company will seek to move its pension plans, which it estimates are underfunded by $5 billion, to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., a federal agency that protects the pensions of workers in private-sector retirement plans.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. has issued numerous statements since the American bankruptcy that it would seek to keep the airline from dumping its pensions on the agency, which is already facing a deficit of its own. The agency's estimate is that the American pensions are underfunded by $10 billion.

If the company is successful in shifting its pensions to the agency, workers would likely lose promised retiree health-care benefits. Many, especially the pilots, would have their pension benefits slashed.

And the taxpayer would have to pick up the tab. Beautiful, just beautiful. How fitting is it that the company is still named AMERICAN Airlines? Because they have the new American way down PAT.

She said that the city must continue investing in economic development, regardless of this setback:

"That's the future of our community... we must."

Yep, fuck free enterprise and fuck the markets. Instead, just turn over the public treasury to the private corporations because they are able to blackmail your community by threatening to take advantage of our insane "free" trade agreements and leave the country. That's the new socialism...American style.
