Just picked it up today!
1970 Chevy K10, half ton 4X4, 350 small block, factory air, factory tach, factory tilt wheel & cab light.
Needs some work but in damned good shape for a 42 year old truck.
Imagine my surprise when I decoded the VIN tonight, to find that this is a 3/4 ton truck. It's a K20, not a K10.
If it has 6 lug wheels,it's a half-ton. If it has 8 lug wheels,it's a 3/4 or 1 ton.
I'd crawl around under it if I were you and look for evidence of frame damage and repair. Chances are it has been hit if the VIN says half-ton (look for the tag in the drivers door jam or on the inside lid of the glove box)for the Gross Vehicle Weight.

I'm not sure if this is OEM color or not. This is a repaint, and not a very good one. You can see the original color in spots when you open the door and it's a light green.
A friend of mine also has a 1970 and his has this same paint scheme with the white over light blue and his is original.
But affordable, decent, used over the snow machines are hard to find.
None of my ex-shipmates lives in a snowy place as far as I know.
But I have other friends and family that do.
Problem is that I want at least seating for four that can get through the trees around here, so that makes the pool smaller.

They're very kewl.

The reason that I asked was that there used to be a GMC around here of the same vintage and it had a color that was close to that, but not quite; which actually was OEM.
GMC/CHEVY used to seem to have alot of interesting colors.
It looks way too nice to work it, esp. off road.
What kind of ballpark price did you give, ( if you want to say).
Rigs that old around here are usually REALLY beat.

It looks to be in a lot better shape in the photo than it really is. It definitely needs work just to be a dependable driver. But, I expected that because I've looked at and drove a LOT of them and they go for a pretty penny even if they're junk.

I gave $6000.00 for this one, which is very good for it's condition. The body only has a few minor spots that need attention and it needs a new GOOD paint job.
Mechanically it's a little rougher. The bones are good, the motor and tranny are good with about a year and a half on complete rebuilds. The rest is a bit rough, but that's OK cause I'll enjoy the hell out of fixing it up.
I may even do a complete frame off restoration. It needs it.
We just don't really do that around here except in the summer.
I almost bought an old vette last summer, but five miles of gravel road to the highway and nine months of winter dissuaded me.
I'll get a new Jeep Wrangler or a used snow-cat first. Then I'll get a summer rig. I have to build some carports this coming summer.
Now is the time to shop for welded aluminum inboard boats and four wheelers.
FISH ON!

Yeah,I would imagine it would. I've never even seen one,but since I don't live in snow country I know next to nothing about them. I did hear from a guy in my Old Fart antique car circle about a man in Minot,ND that is supposed to have dozens for sale and is reputed to be a VERY honest guy. He likes to ride them and bought up every one he could get his hands on for years so he could rebuild and play with them. I have been told he is a very motivated seller because he needs the time and money to work on his antique cars. Not to mention the storage space. Mostly the time. He's gotten older just like the rest of us and wants to spend more time on his antique cars.
Maybe you could post a "want to buy snowmobiles and parts" ad on the Minot Craigs List or the local paper and either buy what you want,or even buy them all and make a bundle repairing them or selling them for parts in Alaska? He probbly has enough of that stuff to fill a large shipping container, and it might just be worth your while financially to rent a container and ship them to you by rail?

No. I've only seen them on tv and in movies. I know nothing about them.

I don't doubt it. Pretty much everything that goes fast that you can slide around is fun.

This truck has 6 lug wheels and the emblems say 10.
I've owned several of these trucks, and GM kept switching back and forth between 5 lug wheels and 6 lug wheels in the 60's. I have a 67 SWB small window stepside out in the yard that has 6 lug wheels, and a 71 C-10 rustbucket that I bought from the original owner than has never been hit or modified in any way and is complete that has 5 lug wheels.
BTW,when I say "rust bucket" I am talking about a truck that I bought for 50 dollars and started it up and drove in on my trailer, and it even has factory air.
I guess this could be a body swap, with a 1/2 ton drivetrain and a 3/4 ton body?
I'm guessing that might be the story. Maybe it was rolled over or rusty, and it was easier and cheaper to just replace the whole body than it was to fix it?
Anyhow, crawling around under it will tell you if it was a "other than roll over" wreck and if the body was replaced due to rust.

That's ALWAYS the case.
One other truism is that rust and dents that you never saw before suddenly pop up at around the third day after you have bought it.
I've bought and hauled several cars or trucks home that I was thrilled to get,and then three days later looked them over and thought to myself,"What the HELL was I thinking when I bought this thing?"
The body only has a few minor spots that need attention and it needs a new GOOD paint job.
If you plan on really driving it instead of making it a show queen, you can get a really good paint job at MAACO for less than 200 bucks if you do all the body work and paint prep before taking it there to have the color shot. You can't even buy the materials for 200 bucks.

If you don't know what you are doing you can REALLY get yer tit in a wringer real fast.
BUT there is NO better way to travel OVER snow with a load and people.
I've ridden in brands that I don't even remember now. Those old ones were real labor intensive. Most tracked rigs are. But when you have juggies and miners and loggers et. al. using them ... well ...

LOL.
Congrats on your new toy, WTP.
It's always a good feeling to drag home a new project. :)
As to the ugly stuff showing up three days after, mine was ugly from the get- go... It'd been stripped, left in the desert for dead. I've been working on it about 16 months, will have it road-worthy in time for spring... ;)
Here's how it looked about 1 week after I brought it home.

I can accept that you have serious mental problems, you certainly have had reason to develop them IF what you claim is true.
I have absolutely zero interest in making your life more pleasant or otherwise.
Frankly pete I have been talking about this particular dance that you seem to so love.
Where YOU seem to think that YOU get to say who is and who is not a real vet.
It doesn't matter fuck all what YOU "think" or "feel", the US GOOBERMENT/US Department of Defense/US NAVY say fucking otherwise.
