Just picked it up today!

1970 Chevy K10, half ton 4X4, 350 small block, factory air, factory tach, factory tilt wheel & cab light.

Needs some work but in damned good shape for a 42 year old truck.

We had a 70 similiar to that when I was growing up, only 2 wheel drive with compound low in Forest Service green. It went everywhere in the Sierras there was a road and later pulled many a loaded horse trailer. We eventually sold it and I still see it around town. We did later add power steering, because steering that thing was like steering a tractor.

I forgot...

650 Holley 4 barrel carburetor completely re-built, 400 turbo automatic transmission and power steering.

It runs and drives great!

I was going to trailer it home, but it drove so nice I decided to drive the almost 70 miles home.

LOL!

I still get the fun of the (what seems like) four foot diameter steering wheel.

I found a couple of 4 speed trucks that I was considering, but they were both 3/4 ton and I wanted the half ton, automatic.

This truck was actually already sold and the guy was supposed to be there Monday to pick it up, so I had to offer a little more than the asking price, but still am very happy with what I paid.

The guy that sold it to you after making a deal with someone else and promising to hold it for them should be dragged outside and beaten to within a inch of his life.

I once drove maybe 20 miles after taking off work and renting a trailer and a truck to go pick up a 34 Ford pu that I had agreed to buy and the seller had agreed to hold for me until after that day,and damned if I didn't meet somebody towing in off on their trailer when I was only a couple of miles from his house.

I had even called him that morning and told him I was on my way.

I suspect it was a good thing for both of us that he refused to come to his door when I got there.

Had a similar thing happen 2 years ago on a 54 Merc 2-dr ht I was buying about 400 miles away. I had given the guy a $250 deposit using PayPal and he knew I would be there in 3 or 4 days to pay off the balance and pick it up. I called him the morning I left home to let him know I was coming and would be there the next day,and got about 300 miles from home befoe getting a room for the night. I called him again the next morning to tell him where I was and that I would be there before noon,and he told me he had already sold the car and returned my money using PayPal. That one cost me 2 days wasted,about 50 gallons of fuel,and hotel and restaurant expenses. I hope he dies a very painful and drawn-out death.

Seems like nobody has any honor anymore,and sticking by your word means nothing to anybody.

Maybe the worse case was when I called a friend in another state to tell him about a 1933 Plymouth coupe at a insane purchase price,and asked him to check it out and make a downpayment on it for me if it seems to be as advertised. I had bought a car from him before,and checked out some Camaro parts for him where I live. His sole interest was in 60's Camaros. Until he spotted that 33 Plymouth,that is. He drove over them and bought it for himself.

Imagine my surprise when I decoded the VIN tonight, to find that this is a 3/4 ton truck. It's a K20, not a K10.

I'm not that familiar with these old Chevy's, and I would have sworn that it was a 1/2 ton. Someone has either put the '10' emblems on or swapped the dog house and didn't take them off.

Oh well, I'm still happy with it.

If it has 6 lug wheels,it's a half-ton. If it has 8 lug wheels,it's a 3/4 or 1 ton.

I'd crawl around under it if I were you and look for evidence of frame damage and repair. Chances are it has been hit if the VIN says half-ton (look for the tag in the drivers door jam or on the inside lid of the glove box)for the Gross Vehicle Weight.

I'm not sure if this is OEM color or not. This is a repaint, and not a very good one. You can see the original color in spots when you open the door and it's a light green.

A friend of mine also has a 1970 and his has this same paint scheme with the white over light blue and his is original.

Good advice pete.

I've been looking for over a year.

But affordable, decent, used over the snow machines are hard to find.

None of my ex-shipmates lives in a snowy place as far as I know.

But I have other friends and family that do.

Problem is that I want at least seating for four that can get through the trees around here, so that makes the pool smaller.

Ever ride in a sno-cat of any sort?

If it has 6 lug wheels,it's a half-ton. If it has 8 lug wheels,it's a 3/4 or 1 ton.

OK, now I'm really confused.

This truck has 6 lug wheels and the emblems say 10.

But according to this site 67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html this is a 3/4 ton truck.

The VIN starts out KE240J. The title VIN matches the vehicle VIN on both the door plate and the sticker in the glovebox.

K= 4x4

E = V-8 Gas

2 = 3/4 Ton

4 = Pickup with Cab and Bed

0 = 1970

J = Janesville Assembly Plant

I guess this could be a body swap, with a 1/2 ton drivetrain and a 3/4 ton body?

The reason that I asked was that there used to be a GMC around here of the same vintage and it had a color that was close to that, but not quite; which actually was OEM.

GMC/CHEVY used to seem to have alot of interesting colors.

It looks way too nice to work it, esp. off road.

What kind of ballpark price did you give, ( if you want to say).

Rigs that old around here are usually REALLY beat.

It looks to be in a lot better shape in the photo than it really is. It definitely needs work just to be a dependable driver. But, I expected that because I've looked at and drove a LOT of them and they go for a pretty penny even if they're junk.

What kind of ballpark price did you give, ( if you want to say).

I gave $6000.00 for this one, which is very good for it's condition. The body only has a few minor spots that need attention and it needs a new GOOD paint job.

Mechanically it's a little rougher. The bones are good, the motor and tranny are good with about a year and a half on complete rebuilds. The rest is a bit rough, but that's OK cause I'll enjoy the hell out of fixing it up.

I may even do a complete frame off restoration. It needs it.

We The People  posted on  2012-01-14   22:31:00 ET  Reply   Trace   Private Reply

#22. To: We The People (#21)

You can never really tell condition from photos.

You always have to look.

$6K seems fair if you want to restore it.

We just don't really do that around here except in the summer.

I almost bought an old vette last summer, but five miles of gravel road to the highway and nine months of winter dissuaded me.

I'll get a new Jeep Wrangler or a used snow-cat first. Then I'll get a summer rig. I have to build some carports this coming summer.

Now is the time to shop for welded aluminum inboard boats and four wheelers.

FISH ON!

Yeah,I would imagine it would. I've never even seen one,but since I don't live in snow country I know next to nothing about them. I did hear from a guy in my Old Fart antique car circle about a man in Minot,ND that is supposed to have dozens for sale and is reputed to be a VERY honest guy. He likes to ride them and bought up every one he could get his hands on for years so he could rebuild and play with them. I have been told he is a very motivated seller because he needs the time and money to work on his antique cars. Not to mention the storage space. Mostly the time. He's gotten older just like the rest of us and wants to spend more time on his antique cars.

Maybe you could post a "want to buy snowmobiles and parts" ad on the Minot Craigs List or the local paper and either buy what you want,or even buy them all and make a bundle repairing them or selling them for parts in Alaska? He probbly has enough of that stuff to fill a large shipping container,and it might just be worth your while financially to rent a container and ship them to you by rail?

Ever ride in a sno-cat of any sort?

No. I've only seen them on tv and in movies. I know nothing about them.

I don't doubt it. Pretty much everything that goes fast that you can slide around is fun.

OK, now I'm really confused.

This truck has 6 lug wheels and the emblems say 10.

I've owned several of these trucks,and GM kept switching back and forth between 5 lug wheels and 6 lug wheels in the 60's. I have a 67 SWB small window stepside out in the yard that has 6 lug wheels,and a 71 C-10 rustbucket that I bought from the original owner than has never been hit or modified in any way and is complete that has 5 lug wheels.

BTW,when I say "rust bucket" I am talking about a truck that I bought for 50 dollars and started it up and drove in on my trailer,and it even has factory air.

I guess this could be a body swap, with a 1/2 ton drivetrain and a 3/4 ton body?

I'm guessing that might be the story. Maybe it was rolled over or rusty,and it was easier and cheaper to just replace the whole body than it was to fix it?

Anyhow,crawling around under it will tell you if it was a "other than roll over" wreck and if the body was replaced due to rust.

That's ALWAYS the case.

One other truism is that rust and dents that you never saw before suddenly pop up at around the third day after you have bought it.

I've bought and hauled several cars or trucks home that I was thrilled to get,and then three days later looked them over and thought to myself,"What the HELL was I thinking when I bought this thing?"

The body only has a few minor spots that need attention and it needs a new GOOD paint job.

If you plan on really driving it instead of making it a show queen,you can get a really good paint job at MAACO for less than 200 bucks if you do all the body work and paint prep before taking it there to have the color shot. You can't even buy the materials for 200 bucks.

If you don't know what you are doing you can REALLY get yer tit in a wringer real fast.

BUT there is NO better way to travel OVER snow with a load and people.

I've ridden in brands that I don't even remember now. Those old ones were real labor intensive. Most tracked rigs are. But when you have juggies and miners and loggers et. al. using them ... well ...
