GOP debate: Ron Paul goes on the attack, steps back into the spotlight

By Emily Goodin - 01/07/12 10:57 PM ET

Ron Paul returned to the spotlight Saturday night by attacking his rivals for the Republican nomination.

The Texas congressman launched ferocious attacks against Rick Santorum, who has surged in the polls recently, and Newt Gingrich.

Those two snapped back, leading to one of the most testy exchanges in the debate, and all frontrunner Mitt Romney had to do was sit back and watch his rivals tear each other down.

Paul, who is second in New Hampshire polls, got plenty of air time to make his attacks and all of the candidates involved in the exchanges found themselves playing defense against each other.

Paul has pounded Santorum since the former senator has surged in the polls, and he kept it up during Saturday night's debate.

Paul, who has called Santorum a "liberal" because of his record on voting for government spending, was asked if he stood by an ad from his campaign calling Santorum "corrupt."

He responded by calling Santorum one of the "top corrupt individuals because he took so much money from the lobbyists."

But his argument was interrupted by feedback from his microphone, causing Santorum to quip: "They caught you not telling the truth, Ron."

While that remark was funny, the former senator also gave a former response, attacking Paul's record for supporting earmarks.

"As a senator from Pennsylvania that I had a responsibility to go out there and represent the interests of my state. And that's what I did to make sure that Pennsylvania was able, in formulas and other things, to get its fair share of money back. I don't apologize for that any more than you did when you earmarked things and did things when you were a congressman in Texas," he said.

Paul wouldn't back down: "You're a big-government conservative. And you don't vote for, you know, right to work and these very important things. And that's what weakens the economy. So to say you're a conservative, I think, is a stretch. But you've convinced a lot of people of it, so somebody has to point out your record."

Santorum snapped back: "I think I have an opportunity to respond here. I've convinced a lot of people of it because my record is actually pretty darn good. … You vote against everything. I don't vote against everything. I do vote for some spending. I do think government has a role to play."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry used that exchange to note: "You've just seen a great example of why I got in this race, because I happen to think that I'm the only outsider, with the possible exception of Jon Huntsman, who has not been part of the problem in Washington, D.C., the insiders in Washington, D.C."

He also accused Paul of being a hypocrite: "Here's what frustrates me, is that you go get the earmarks and then you vote against the bill? Now, I don't know what they call that in other places, but, Congressman Paul, in Texas, we call that hypocrisy." Subscribe to *RON PAUL 2012*

Ron Paul Slays Newt: 'When I Was Drafted, I Was Married And Had Two Kids -- And I Went'...

He got a big applause line.

Ron Paul did himself a lot of good last night.

It was his best debate to date. He really slowed down and explained his positions.

He's easily going to come in second on Tuesday. No one will be close.

#2. To: jwpegler, Suffolk University NH Tracking poll, Santorum dropping like a rock--Paul Huntsman gaining on Mitt (#1)

1/8/2012

For the fourth day in a row, Mitt Romney has fallen in overnight tracking, and Rick Santorum has dropped into fifth place among likely voters in the Jan. 10 New Hampshire Republican presidential primary, according to the latest Suffolk University/7News two-day tracking poll.

Ron Paul is gaining on Romney, while Jon Huntsman has rallied into third place.

Romney dropped 4 percentage points overnight to 35 percent. The former Massachusetts governor still holds a 15 point lead, but his margin has declined by 8 percentage points since last Tuesday, when 43 percent of likely Republican voters backed Romney.

Romney is followed by Paul (20 percent), Huntsman (11 percent), Newt Gingrich (9 percent) and Santorum, who dropped another point to 8 percent overnight. Rick Perry and Buddy Roemer each had 1 percent with 15 percent undecided.

“It’s a New Hampshire primary, it’s January, and here we go again,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston. “Romney’s strategy of running out the clock is costing him margin, Huntsman is still fighting hard and beginning to rally, and New Hampshire is playing contrarian to Rick Santorum, the Iowa Caucus star of a week ago, who has dropped to fifth place.”

All of the field calls for the tracking on Saturday, Jan. 7 were completed prior to the 9 p.m. EST start time of the first of two debates this weekend.

Romney showed weakness among younger voters and in the north/west region of the state which includes the counties of Carroll, Cheshire, Coos, Grafton, and Sullivan. Among younger voters ages 18-34 years, Romney now trails Paul, who leads 39 percent to 25 percent. In the north/west region Paul led Romney 27 percent to 23 percent.

Huntsman improved from 3 percent to 10 percent in Rockingham county, the second largest county in New Hampshire. Huntsman also rallied hard among young Independents ages 18-44 years, where he increased from 10 percent to 18 percent. Among older Independents ages 65+, he is in second place, trailing Romney by 15 points (37 percent to 22 percent).

The Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston will release results of two-day tracking polls every day leading up to the New Hampshire presidential primary on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012.

Santourum has limited money and he realizes that the only thing to be won in NH is Miss Congeniality. He's in SC which is where he should be. Santorum has been getting good advice and his demeanor on the stump has really improved.
