WASHINGTON — A defiant President Barack Obama sidestepped Congress on Wednesday and appointed a new consumer watchdog, locking horns with Republicans, who immediately accused the president of exceeding his authority to appoint a director to an agency they oppose.

Speaking at a high school in the election battleground state of Ohio with his nominee for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by his side, Obama struck a populist tone and blamed congressional Republicans for stalling the appointment of former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray as “America’s consumer watchdog.”

“I’ve got an obligation to act on behalf of the American people,” the president said. “And I’m not going to stand by while a minority in the Senate puts party ideology ahead of the people that we were elected to serve.”

Stirring up a fight, Obama names consumer watchdog Stirring up a fight, Obama names consumer watchdog Defying Republican lawmakers,

President Barack Obama on Wednesday barreled by the Senate and installed a national consumer watchdog on his own, provoking GOP threats of a constitutional showdown in the courts.

Setting a fierce tone in the election-year fight for middle-class voters, Obama said: "I refuse to take 'no' for an answer."

Senate Republicans block Obama nominee to head consumer finance agency Senate Republicans block Obama nominee to head consumer finance agency As expected, Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked a confirmation vote on President Barack Obama's choice to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Hours later, the White House announced that Obama also had appointed three members to the National Labor Relations Board, in defiance of Senate Republicans.

In Ohio, the president noted that he'd nominated Cordray last summer to serve as a beat cop against deceptive, abusive and predatory loan products in the financial marketplace, but that Senate Republicans had blocked the appointment, not because Cordray was unqualified, but because “they don’t agree with the law that set up a consumer watchdog in the first place,” he said.

Senate Republicans have made clear that is, indeed, their motive.“They want to weaken the law. They want to water it down,” Obama said, adding that, “by the way, a lot of folks in the financial industry have poured millions of dollars to try to water it down.”

Senate Republicans blocked a confirmation vote on Cordray last month and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky accused Obama on Wednesday of making an unprecedented appointment, because the Senate isn't in official recess.

Traditionally, McConnell said, presidents make such appointments only when the Senate is in recess for 10 days or longer.

Obama has “arrogantly circumvented the American people,” McConnell said, adding that the move “lands this appointee in uncertain legal territory, threatens the confirmation process and fundamentally endangers the Congress’ role in providing a check on the excesses of the executive branch.

”He said that Republicans wanted structural changes to the agency, which was “subject to none of the checks that independent agencies normally operate under.”White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer accused Senate Republicans of coming up with a “gimmick” to prevent the president from exercising his recess appointment authority: being out of town for weeks but convening every few days in a “pro forma” session.Sarah Binder, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a center-left policy-research center, said the Constitution “doesn’t define what constitutes a valid recess for the purpose of the president’s proper exercise of the recess appointment power, leaving it open to interpretation.

”She said that in the most recent court case on the matter _ when the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., challenged the recess appointment of William Pryor to an appeals court by President George W. Bush _ the administration’s right to make a recess appointment on the seventh day of a 10-day intra-session recess was upheld.

The back and forth over Cordray underscores the partisan fighting that's characterized every development of the new consumer protection bureau, the most tangible government response to the nation's 2008 economic meltdown.

After failing last month to get the 60 votes needed for a straight up-or-down Senate confirmation vote on Cordray, Obama hinted that he might use a recess appointment to bypass the GOP filibuster that's left the new agency without a director since its regulatory authority began in July.

At the time, the president also voiced frustration over GOP efforts to delay his many other nominations, including federal judges and assistant treasury secretaries. Senate Republicans also have blocked appointments to the National Labor Relations Board; Obama appointed three members Wednesday.

The NLRB appointments allow the board to decide cases again. That authority was lost earlier this week when the five-member panel was down to only two members and was unable to field a quorum. Kimberly Freeman Brown, the executive director of American Rights at Work, commended the president’s NLRB appointments.“Without a functioning board, employers and employees alike would have been stuck in legal limbo on a range of critical issues, including the rights of certain workers to form unions and the appropriate use of social media to discuss workplace concerns,” Brown said.Created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau monitors deceptive, abusive and predatory loan products in the financial marketplace.

A division of the Federal Reserve,

the bureau works as a stand-alone agency to make sure consumers understand the terms of loan products by reducing fine print, simplifying forms and helping to illuminate costly penalties and fees that often are hidden.Senate Republicans see the bureau as a vast overreach of government authority and have blocked any nominee for director until the agency's structure is revamped.

Without a director, the bureau could examine and oversee large banks, but it couldn't oversee non-depository institutions such as mortgage companies, payday lenders and credit bureaus. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce decried Obama’s move as “unprecedented, constitutionally questionable” and said it put the authority of the director and the bureau’s work “in legal jeopardy.”

Trace this thread. It is you that started this by claiming I mock God.

I just proved otherwise.

And you continue to mock. Why won't you listen to Jesus and abide by his teachings?

The simple truth is he has lost the thread of comprehending the very teachings he claims to value most; this of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. He doesn't want to admit this or try to see how this is so, but it is obvious to everyone else here what he is really all about, and he does not like that.

Some Christians reject the call to be like Christ and rely instead on forgiveness. This is known as cheap grace - it's what gives Christianity as a whole a bad name.

Economics is a social phenomenon and in no way a “science”, no matter how desperately its high priests would like to have it believed otherwise. It is, instead, a branch of anthropology and the sooner that is recognized and accepted, the better off human-kind in general and the world of academic economics, in particular, shall be proximity1

We probably will see widespread civil disorder in the 1980s, as a direct result of our faltering economic system. Ron Paul

You don't have to be Christian to know the Bible. I had instruction in my youth before I was old enough to quit going to Church, and I have taken Bible study classes at Northwest Christian College next to the University of Oregon when I was going to school getting my degree there. I am a perpetual student of political thought and history.

Learning about something that has had much influence on Western Civilization just made good sense. You don't need to be a Christian to do that, just as I did not become a Muslim when I studied the Koran.

You are confusing ignorance and superstition with fact and law.

It is VERY illegal to have sex with children. So illegal it is called rape.

It is NOT illegal to be a homosexual, though. You just want it to be and are confusing your wishes with actual facts.

Not only that, but you are NOT a conservative if you think what two or more adults do sexually and in private is a crime and it is the governments business to control the sex lives of consenting adults.

Not a very strong one if at all....rightly so. But, I'll take note of what it is that you care to pay attention to.

Why Are We Surprised With the Push for 'Pedophile Rights'

Michael Brown, Aug 26, 2011

Many Americans have been shocked by reports about a recent pro-pedophilia conference in Baltimore in which psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, representing institutions like Harvard and Johns Hopkins, sought to present pedophilia in a sympathetic and even positive light. But why should this surprise us?

Academic articles in scholarly journals have been presenting pedophilia in a sympathetic light for years, and, as Matthew Cullinan Hoffman noted, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) released a report in 1998 “claiming that the ‘negative potential’ of adult sex with children was ‘overstated’ and that ‘the vast majority of both men and women reported no negative sexual effects from their child sexual abuse experiences.’ It even claimed that large numbers of the victims reported that their experiences were ‘positive,’ and suggested that the phrase ‘child sex abuse’ be replaced with ‘adult-child sex.’” Others have coined the more disgusting term “intergenerational intimacy.”

The APA’s report was so disturbing that it drew an official rebuke from Congress, yet the pro-pedophile (or, pro-pederast) push continues. In fact, some psychiatric leaders, like Dr. Richard Green, who were instrumental in removing homosexuality from the APA’s list of mental disorders in 1973, have been fighting to remove pedophilia as well.

Consider, for example, this statement from the late John Hopkins professor John Money: “Pedophilia and ephebophilia [referring to sexual attraction felt by an adult toward an adolescent] are no more a matter of voluntary choice than are left-handedness or color blindness. There is no known method of treatment by which they may be effectively and permanently altered, suppressed, or replaced. Punishment is useless. There is no satisfactory hypothesis, evolutionary or otherwise, as to why they exist in nature’s overall scheme of things. One must simply accept the fact that they do exist, and then, with optimum enlightenment, formulate a policy of what to do about it.”

Now, go back and reread that paragraph, substituting the word “homosexuality” for “pedophilia” and “ephebophilia.” How interesting!

To help flesh this out, let’s picture a homosexual man making his case to a heterosexual man:

1) My homosexuality is not a sexual preference but a sexual orientation, just as much as your heterosexuality is not a sexual preference but a sexual orientation.

2) My homosexuality is just as normal as your heterosexuality.

3) Since my behavior is genetically determined and is not a choice, it is intolerant and hateful to suggest that it is wrong. And to call my sexual behavior illegal or immoral, or to refuse to legitimize same-sex relationships, is to be a moral bigot of the highest order.

4) I deeply resent your attempts to identify areas of my upbringing and environment as alleged causes for my homosexuality.

5) I categorically reject the myth that someone can change his or her sexual orientation. Rather, such statements only add to the anguish and suffering of gays and lesbians, and attempts to change us often lead to catastrophic consequences, including depression and suicide.

Now, let’s turn this around and have a pederast making his case to a homosexual, substituting the words accordingly (thus, “My pederasty is not a sexual preference but a sexual orientation, just as much as your homosexuality is not a sexual preference but a sexual orientation.”)

In point of fact, all the principle arguments commonly used to normalize homosexuality have been used to normalize pedophilia and pederasty, as I documented in painstaking (and painful) detail in A Queer Thing Happened to America, where I also made clear that I was not equating homosexuality with pedophilia but was instead comparing the arguments used to normalize both.

Here are the eight principle arguments, all of which (in modified form) are commonly used in support of homosexuality:

1) Pedophilia is innate and immutable.

2) Pederasty is richly attested in many different cultures throughout history.

3) The claim that adult-child sexual relationships cause harm is greatly overstated and often completely inaccurate.

4) Consensual adult-child sex can actually be beneficial to the child.

5) Pederasty should not be classified as a mental disorder, since it does not cause distress to the pederast to have these desires and since the pederast can function as a normal, contributing member of society.

6) Many of the illustrious homosexuals of the past were actually pedophiles.

7) People are against intergenerational intimacy because of antiquated social standards and puritanical sexual phobias.

8) This is all about love and equality and liberation.

But none of these arguments should surprise us. After all, the age of increasing sexual anarchy in which we live is a fruit of the sexual revolution of the 1960’s, and the seeds of sexual anarchy were sown already by Alfred Kinsey in the late 1940’s, as Prof. Judith Reisman has tirelessly documented. And it was Kinsey, after all, who relied on the research of pedophiles to document the sexual responses of infants and children.

All this, to be sure, is utterly unspeakable. But it should certainly come as no surprise. In fact, we should expect this and more.

Not only that, but you are NOT a conservative if you think what two or more adults do sexually and in private is a crime and it is the governments business to control the sex lives of consenting adults.

Actually that has nothing to do with being a conservative. Pro or con.

Yes it does, since the definition of a conservative is someone who is for maximum individual rights and limiting government power over individuals.

It's RELIGION that has nothing to do with being a conservative. Especially since all religions are about the power of the organization and the control over the followers.

Someone out there advocates drinking piss for good health.

Is that a mainstream point of view?

Just because someone out there promoting an idea it does not mean that the idea is either viable or palpable.

So while you forth on about this, I'll keep from laughing as you mistake an extreme and minority position as being reflective of the mainstream.

I'll believe that a corporation is a person 1 second after Texas executes one...

So isn't that the same reason why Homosexuality became acceptable social behavior in the first place????? (Along with a shit load of lawsuits)!!!! And now that same minority position is pushing for pedophilia to become acceptable social behavior....

Let me know when one moves in next door to you and messes with your kids, I want to see your reaction...... that's if you don't end up in jail first.....

I just love people that wait till something has already happened before they whine about it, instead of correctly interpreting the writing on the wall and putting a stop to it before it ever happens.....
